H1Z1 PS4/Xbox One Versions "Paused," as PC Edition Gets Release Date
"It was definitely a tough decision, but I think it was the right one to make."
H1Z1: King of the Kill will leave Steam Early Access and launch as a full, finished game on September 20, developer Daybreak Games announced today. The other big piece of news is that the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of the game have been "paused," with no new release window announced.
King of the Kill has been in Early Access since February 2016. Daybreak said in a news release today that the game has "greatly evolved" over the course of this period. The studio has adjusted some of the combat and vehicle systems in the wake of fan feedback, added a training mode, and refreshed the UI. You can see some of King of the Kill's new and revamighped features in the video above.
Daybreak is positioning King of the Kill as a "high-intensity online multiplayer shooter" in which players can take part in a number of last-player-standing modes. One of these is "Battle Royale," which was created by community member PlayerUnknown.
In February, Daybreak said King of the Kill would launch digitally for PS4 and Xbox One this summer. That's no longer the plan. Producer Chris Wynn said in a blog post today that the studio was "spread too thin" trying to work on the PC and console versions at the same time, all of which were made internally.
"It became clear that to best line up the game for success was to reduce the number of variables in the equation," Wynn said. "As a result, I have decided to pause our efforts on the console versions and put 100% of the focus on to the PC version of the game for right now. It was definitely a tough decision, but I think it was the right one to make. We have been able to make essential updates to the gunplay, combat, and vehicles, get the new map in a state to go live, and add lots of polish to the core areas of the game."
Wynn went on to say that Daybreak refuses to compromise on quality, even if that means delaying something as it did with King of the Kill's console versions.
"We are creating a competitive game that is consistent, predictable, fair, and as fun to watch as it is to play," he said. "By structuring the plan in this way, we ultimately will achieve higher-quality targets and not put the game in a situation where we have to compromise quality to hit a date."
King of the Kill's PC version sells for $20 through Steam Early Access. The price will go up to $30 come September 20, so if you're interested, you may want to pick it up now.
Daybreak is also working on H1Z1: Just Survive, which is basically the regular H1Z1 game as you already know it. It offers the same open-world gameplay that was in place when the zombie-themed game originally launched in 2015. It will remain in Early Access, priced at $20, through the end of 2016.
H1Z1 officially split apart into two games--Just Survive and King of the Kill--in February 2016. In addition to King of the Kill, Just Survive could come to consoles, but nothing has been decided yet.
