Half-Life 2 is Now an RTS Thanks to This Wonderful Mod

Steam users can now play the free multiplayer beta of Lambda Wars.

It's now been ten years since Valve transported players into Half-Life 2, that seminal first-person shooter featuring the awe-inspiring dystopia of City 17, the unforgettable tripedal giants known as Striders, and the haunting and bleak urban landscapes that Gordon Freeman crowbarred his way through.

While it's perfectly understandable to cling onto the hope that, on some electrifying day, Half-Life 3 will release and finish a story that started in 1998, here's a mod that will at least dull the pang of anguish while we wait.

A modder collective, called Vortal Storm, has released the beta build of a Half-Life 2 mod that completely reimagines it as an RTS game. The assets are all in place, from Combine soliders to resistance fighters to those gargantuan Striders, but now are all displayed and controlled from a typical RTS bird's-eye-view.

The free multiplayer game, called Lambda Wars, allows players to control either the Combine Overwatch or the Resistance forces, with the signature RTS goal in place of destroying your opponent's base.

Vortal Storm says the look was achieved by applying a Source Engine modification to the 2010 RTS Alien Swarm (this mod has now been in development for six years). It notes on its Steam Page that both the Combine and Resistance factions feature "a full host of units, abilities, buildings, research, and defenses."

It adds: "Lambda Wars features full-fledged RTS gameplay and a robust RTS interface and is focused on multiplayer but strategic AI opponents and dedicated single-player missions are also included."

Lambda Wars recently passed the Steam Greenlight community voting system. The beta is available though here. Images can be found below, while a trailer is situated above.

I no longer like Valve, but even I won't agree with what you have said there.

Maybe all you want is yet another Half-Life title, which would have to contend with the over-saturated sci-fi FPS subgenre if you don't realize already, and you are p*ssed that Valve couldn't count to 3.

Yet, really, you are going to use that disenchantment to say things which are not entirely truthful like Valve making money off content which others made? Are you going to be so disenchanted that you would leave out the fact that Valve shares the revenue for that content with the content-maker, something that the other "greedy" game-makers don't even do?

Seems if PC gamers didn't have mods, they wouldn't have any new games to play...there's that I guess.

<< LINK REMOVED >> What about the loads of indie and early access titles? Not saying they are all good, and many are very early access, but there are a lot.

@haystacito

Lol in the same comment you use the indie titles, a throw away genre, as an argument and then dismantle it yourself by saying there are a lot of them and they're not all good. Debate isn't your strong point.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I didn't know we were debating :). Whether they are bad or good they still count as new games to play, don't they? Quantity is all I was trying to point out.

Valve sucks. Not because HL isn't awesome, but because they could care less about their fans.

For all the praise that is showered on them, and the complaining that goes around about other 'greedy' publishers and developers, at least greedy company x bothers to deliver content. Valve is content to collect revenues from content they didn't actually have to produce themselves.

They should sell the Half-Life IP to an actual developer, since they are just a retailer. There's about as much movement on Half-Life as there would be if K-Mart owned the IP.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Nice bait mate, but Valve has the best fan service in the business, ever wondered why they're games take so long to come out? They put quality assurance and player experience ahead of everything else. AND if thats not enough, gave us 3 DLC Chapters of Left 4 Dead FOR FREE, Steam sales that bring the biggest titles down to mere dollars.

"Valve is content to collect revenues from content they didn't actually have to produce themselves", so a Video Game Publisher then? Man with that logic, I'll expect to see you on any Tom Clancy's The Division article arguing that Ubisoft should sell that IP to an "actual developer" because they're not making it, just publishing it.

Calm yourself, don't hate.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha no.

They push out LOADS of stuff for the community. They do something VERY VERY few devs do. They allow people to push out stuff for their game that they didn't make and give them some of the proceeds. Valve doesn't want to disappoint fans. Imagine if HL3 came out tomorrow, and was unfinished. How mad would you be? They care about their fans. They JUST put out the End of the Line update and it was almost entirely community orientated. Almost all of the proceeds (at least 90%) got to the End of the Line creators.

Seriously, go back to whatever source you got your info from, and stop trying to give us misguided information.

<< LINK REMOVED >> If Valve wanted too (apparently they don't) they probably could have. Fairly large space of time between Halflife and Halflife 2 with an "8 hour war".

Would have been great to know what happened to Shepard as well.
