Half-Life 3 Crowdfunding Campaign Is Just As Absurd As You'd Think

Fans seeking to raise $150,000 to launch advertising blitz to encourage Valve to release the long-awaited game.

A group of Half-Life fans have launched a crowdfunding campaign through Indiegogo with the hope of raising money to create a "We Want Half-Life 3" advertising campaign so large that Valve can't ignore it. The group, which says it is backed by advertising agency McKee Wallwork & Company (we've contacted them for comment), is looking to raise $150,000 "to get Valve to finish the game we've dreamed about for all these years."

No Caption Provided

The Half-Life 3 advertising blitz is aiming to be so massive that it will reach "every single employee at Valve." How will the group do this? If the campaign hits $3,000, they will create a Google AdWord campaign that specifically targets Valve's employees. This ad would simply state: "WE WANT HALF-LIFE 3."

If funding reaches $9,000, they will also rent a truck with a giant billboard on it to drive around Bellevue, Washington--where Valve is headquartered. "We'll plaster it with our propaganda and besiege Valve HQ in Bellevue, Washington until their white flag is raised. Or, at least until the end of the day when our driver's shift is over," the group says.

Beyond that, should funding reach $45,000, the group will hire a squad of Gabe Newell doppelgangers to approach Valve's HQ wearing "We Want HL3" t-shirts. "Who knows, maybe they will sneak into a strategic meeting and release Half-Life 3 themselves," they write. If this stretch goal is reached, the group promises to film the event for all to see later on.

Finally, should funding reach $150,000, the group will hold a huge concert in Seattle and invite all Valve employees to attend. The purpose of this is so Half-Life fans can speak directly to Valve employees about their request for Half-Life 3.

The Half-Life 3 campaign organizers, Chris Salem and Kyle Mazzei, say all proceeds will go towards encouraging Valve to release Half-Life 3; they won't make any money on this, they say. Backing the project at $5 gets you a personalized "thank you" card, while a contribution of $15 or more gets you a "We Want Half-Life 3" pin. Giving $75 to the campaign will net you a "We Want Half-Life 3" t-shirt, as well as all previous perks.

You can read more about the campaign at its Indiegogo page. While Kickstarter has an all-or-nothing policy regarding funding, Indiegogo does not, meaning the "We Want Half-Life 3" campaign could still become a reality even if the full $150,000 is not reached.

The most recent Half-Life game was 2007's Half-Life 2: Episode Two. That game advances the story of previous entries Half-Life 2 and Half-Life 2: Episode One. A third episode was planned, but has not seen the light of day.

What we really need are some bulbs to go on in heads at Valve. Let me see if I can help. First, single player narrative gameplay, puzzle, platform shooter, is not dead. The reason Half-Life did so well is that it took a great set of gameplay mechanics and storytelling tools and used them in ways that enhanced the gameplay itself. I'm preaching to the chior, but this series is known for getting the balance just right in most areas. The game rarely drags at any point. The best part is that there is little story told at you. The story is told around you at times, but its always only enough to keep you moving. This isn't a difficult formula per se, but what if we throw in the one component that has altered the gaming landscape... online,

Now hear me out. I'm not saying go multiplayer with HL universe (though that might be worth revisiting later on a grander scale of war, whatever) but open an online component to crowdsource modules for the game itself. Mods that would themselves become part of the engine for certain games or others. Reinvent the Source from the ground up again using the community to actually build, write and beta test.

If you crowdsource the content and curate it... you could really have something interesting as well as a potential consistent flow of content to sell and co-profit...

What a waste of money. They could at least donate it to something related, like some autism research charity.

They should just be patient... there are like a gazillion games on Steam they can play through especially during sale events. I picked up several Assassin creed games for next to nothing.

I think the expectations are so high from the game that Valve is afraid it will dictate its own demise with an even marginally sub-par game. I can totally understand their hesitations.

I wish Valve would at least acknowledge the game. They don't need to give us a release date. Just say it is officially in the works. Bonus points for teaser screens. But the fact they have given us absolutely nothing, officially, makes you wonder who is in charge of marketing at Valve. It is always good to keep interest high among the masses. But when they give us nothing, for so long, it causes more grief and dissatisfaction than anything else.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Maybe they're not making the game. << LINK REMOVED >> the employees make the games they want to make. If no one there wants to make HL3 then it won't get made. Now it's been so long it would be hard to live up to the expectations people are setting for the game if it were released. Seems like a lose lose situation to me.

Someone ought to start a 'Never Release Half-Life 3!' campaign. Why? It's reverse psychology, and Valve will think that 'nobody tells us what to do'...

it's possible they are holding off on HL3 until steam OS comes out of testing and is ready for prime time. Gabe has stated he's not to fond of windows and steam OS replacing windows and the go to OS for games would ride massively on developer support. Support which won't happen unless there is a large enough user base, that's where HL3 comes in. it will sell millions regardless of it being able to live up to the hype or not, Just make Steam OS the only way to get it on pc and bam there is your user base and justification for developers to support SteamOS/Linux. Think one game isn't enough. Look and the Wiiu, Super smash bros. alone caused a massive spike in sales. Hell a new Zelda game would likely do triple what bros did.

It really is unbelievable that Valve would end Episode 2 the way they did. Then they abandon the series for seven years and counting, with very little mention of if the next game will ever be released.

It's no way to treat your fans or the franchise that built your company.

Half Life is one of the worst pieces of shit ever released! Half Life 1 and 2 were dull bland games with no story line at all!!! The only reason I would even play it was to see how the graphics look and immediately uninstall it and shit on the disc before I break it in two...**** Half Life...Doom 3 rocks all these pussies asses!!!

Half Life 3 isn't coming out anytime soon . End of story . Don't expect it to be launch title of Source 2 either . Left 4 Dead 3 will be launch title and they'll probably give it to users , so they can create their own multiplayer maps for it , just like how Epic is doing with Unreal Tournament. That's how Source 2 will be advertised and Gabe already said that Source 2's main focus will be user generated content and Left 4 Dead 3 is perfect game to achieve that, not Half Life 3. It's sad but accept it , just like how I did and move on.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Left 4 Dead was a super boring game to me. I don't have any interest in playing the series anymore. And I'm pretty okay with how many HL games there are even though there was no decent ending to it.

If Half-Life 3 or HL2 Episode 3 doesn't involve Portal or something remotely related which would lead to some sort of crossover and not just what they suggested in Episode 2. I will close my Steam account

Half Life 3 is released... but as a free to play multiplayer MMO riddled with microtransactions with no graphical options, 720p only and locked to 30fps. Also it has a 65FOV. The story based missions in the game are linear corridor shooters, where the open world consists of nothing but fetch and escort missions.

Also, the crowbar isn't in the game.

Well, now they've officially made it so that HL3 cannot possibly live up to the level of hype made for it.

Now people will most probably just be mad and disappointed IF it ever gets released.

Valve makes an insane amount of money from Steam that they have almost no reason to invest money into Half Life 3. Their return on investment is probably not that high with the way the game market is right now.

Good lord. HL3 will have to be the most incredible game ever made. If not, then someone somewhere (probably one of the team members of this crazy kickstarter) will likely go ballistic and hurt someone.

Yes advertise a game that for all we know will never be made.. what a waste of money, which is far better off going towards homeless or starving kids. If Valve want to make HL3 they will do it, and they don't need to advertise such a high profile game which will sell insanely well. This won't make them get HL3 out the door any faster, it'll just make people think they are releasing a game soon that hasn't ever been officially announced.

Heck, they still haven't even released HL2 episode 3.

This is stupid. I'd rather wait and get a really well made, polished HL3 instead of bugging Valve and pressuring them to rush out a game.

I am a huge Half Life fan, but some of the other fans just go too far and need to tone it down.
