Halo 4 double XP unlocked with Dew, Doritos purchases

Gamers who pick up Game Fuel soft drink and specially marked bags of chips can earn double experience in Microsoft's new shooter.

Halo fans hoping to level up their soldiers more expeditiously in November's Halo 4 can pick up Mountain Dew and Doritos products to earn double experience points, parent company PepsiCo announced today.

Game Fuel is back.
Game Fuel is back.

Beginning October 15, players who purchase Mountain Dew's special Game Fuel soft drink (at right) and specially marked Doritos products can begin entering codes through the promotion's website.

More information on the promotion can be found at the official website. Halo 4 launches worldwide on November 6 exclusively for the Xbox 360. It is a direct sequel to 2007's Halo 3, and is the first numbered entry in the series developed at 343 Industries.

[CORRECTION] An earlier version of this story indicated gamers could customize their weapon loadouts through the promotion's website. In fact, players can only customize their arsenals through the Xbox 360 itself. GameSpot regrets the error.

Why are people acting like a bag of chips and one soda is going to hurt you? Yes, if you consume TOO MUCH of it, it will hurt you. Most of us enjoy eating these type of foods while gaming, watching a movie or sports game, etc.

This is completely optional, anyways. If people choose to participate, then that's their decision. I would not be judging others on how they live or eat. They have every right to eat snacks like this. Labeling them for eating these kinds of snacks is silly and uncalled for. I like soda and chips, but I know better not to each a lot of it or else it will affect my health. I moderate the "junk" food with proper "nutritional" food. You should not judge someone just because they drink soda or have chips.

Like I said, everyone should have proper discretion and common sense when consuming ANYTHING. And let them enjoy their fun. If you do not have common sense to watch how much you eat, then that's the problem, not the food.

I remember drinking the original Game Fuel while I played Halo 3 a few years back. Good times. :)

@Whole-Lotta With your comment we are all to assume that you will never play another console game in the future, right? Because playing console games means you are sitting there on your couch, not doing anything other than staring at a tv screen.

Or did you mean that it's ok to do in moderation? Or did you mean to say, "All console game companies want people to be stupid and fat"?

You aren't selling your gaming consoles right now, are you? Why not? You just complained about Halo and MS making you fat and stupid for the soda rewards, but what about playing games in the first place?

@Landsharkk @Whole-Lotta Playing video games does not make a person obese. Junk food, over-consumption, sometimes genetics, and lack of exercise makes people obese.

@Landsharkk @Whole-Lotta Playing video games does not equal a lack of exercise. A lack of exercise equals a lack of exercise.

Just about anything in moderation is fine, unless you want to further trivialize the issue and talk about rat poison or cutting one's self with rusted razors. Feel free to chime any time you feel like continuing to miss the point.

In moderation it's fine, but then again, soda is fine in moderation too.

Half of the complainers are probably sipping on some soda while they read this.

Also, where have you all been while coke has been promoting 'points' you get by drinking coke and redeeming them on their website?

Another thing, did all of you complainers not realize that GAMING ON A CONSOLE means SITTING ON YOUR A$$ (well, except for Kinect, but chances are you don't like Kinect, remember?).

Hypocrites. lol

@Landsharkk All soda is terrible, if I remember right it has a rather high correlation with obesity. That said, @FallenOneX, Coke may not have a video game connected to it, but it's pretty much got that whole "Christmas Season" down.

@Landsharkk I see your point, but Coke doesn't have their product connected to a game (yet) that is geared towards young adults, IE kids. You can get Coke Rewards points from Minute Maid juice bottles.

This pretty much just feeds the notion that all gamers just sit around drinking and eating things that aren't healthy. I haven't read an article yet that says a gamer died playing games for a weekend while eating vegetables and drinking water. But they always manage to squeeze in that they "lived" on a diet of soft drinks or snack foods somewhere.

Lets give gamers cavities and overweight issues. By adopting bad dieting habits and and rotten teeth we will reward you with 2x XP. Through this offer we hope to turn our demographic of gamers into fat fouled breathed individuals who will either be dead by the next release in the Halo series or to fat to get through the door of their local retailer. We'll need more televisions in hospitals next year. GREAT NEWS to dentists and doctors! You're all about to endure a financial spike in the coming year.

@-Five0-

Dude... It's like a month long promotion. It will take longer than that for someone to become overweight. Besides, people can drink soda and play games whenever they want. It's not a Mountain Dew/Halo exclusive thing.

@-Five0- Hmm, I'll bet you a soda that you are a console gamer, right? Funny how playing games on a console means you sit there, not moving, staring at a TV screen. Why have you not complained about console companies for making consoles in the first place?

If drinking soda makes you have overweight issues, then shouldn't sitting on a couch playing console games do the same thing?

And in both cases no one is being forced to partake in the activity.

I love to game, but don't drink soda. Problem solved (wait, was there ever a problem?)

Eat junk food, drink sugar-packed fluids = REWARD

This isn't just really stupid. Its insulting, demeaning, and REALLY, REALLY STUPID.

@Lhomity Insulting and Demeaning how? If I feel like a soda, they give me incentive to get their brand. If i want chips maybe I'll buy those doritos because I get some stupid reward. Who cares?

Fact is this isn't going to make people consume the products if they already don't. The kids who are going to be drinking mountain dew playing Halo weren't ever going to be having a V8. They may smack their head with the controller though, for various reasons.

@Def_Defyin Its naive to pretend that advertising like this has no influence, even on somebody who doesn't normally consume products like this. What it does is provide incentive. If you're going to buy and play Halo 4 and want to take advantage of 'double xp', then you need to buy junk food. Not every man and his dog may LEAP at the opportunity, but that is the very incentive provided.

What I find "insulting" and "demeaning" is the notion that I can advance faster in a video game if I eat Doritos and drink Mountain Dew.

@Dragon_Nexus I didn't imply people were stupid. I called a promotion that, at its core, says if you consume junk food you will advance faster in a video game. And one that already supports a competitive and zealous audience.

@Lhomity But that does imply people are stupid.

So stupid that they'll link "junk food" with "reward" and *no other thought process takes place inbetween*

Yes, there are people who are dumb enough to overeat themselves to fattness, but you'll find these people don't need the excuse of "Cos I'll get rewards" to do it.

@Landsharkk There's a striking difference between a form of entertainment providing you with rewards via experience and stimulation, and being awarded FOR consuming junk food. Unless you consider chowing down on a bag of doritos to be "entertaining".
