Halo 5: Guardians is finally adding the fan-favorite Grifball mode, developer 343 Industries has announced. In a blog post, multiplayer designer Max Grossman confirmed the frenetic yet strategic mode (as well as other ball-themed modes) will launch in the Xbox One shooter sometime later this month.

No Caption Provided

343 said went to great lengths to ensure it "got it right" with Halo 5's version of Grifball. Grossman said the studio called in an expert on the mode, community player Jeffrey "Nokyard" Fischer," to help design the mode. 343 flew him to the developer's studio "a few months" before work even began on it to make sure the developer "understood exactly what is important to Grifballers."

"We had many design discussions with Nokyard and he even built the first Halo 5 Grifball Court which will be launching alongside the mode this update (it's unlike any Grifball court you have ever seen before)," Grossman said. "Nok worked with our Weapons Designer, Daniel Wiksten, on trying to get the damage and impulse blast of the hammer to feel right. This collaboration helped us hammer out (pun intended) the delicate balance of Gravity Hammer vs. Sword vs. Ball that Grifball so heavily relies upon. We leveraged Nokyard's wealth of Grifball knowledge to try to make the most exciting Grifball yet, complete with thrusting Grif, Ground Pound kills, and ball throwing. Playing Grifball during playtests over the last few months has been some of the most fun we have had in the new building."

Grifball will be added to Halo 5 later this month. We'll have more details as they're made available.

One of the other ball-based modes coming to Halo 5 is an "upgraded" version of Neutral Bomb Assault that, for Halo 5, will be called Assault.

"The core rules are more or less unchanged: a ball spawns on the center line of the map and players must deliver the ball to the enemy team's goal and it explodes (Woot!). That's about where the similarities end," Grossman said. "We went back to the drawing board on when and where the ball spawns, the abilities of the ball carrier, and the arming process itself. When the game starts, the ball will spawn at a unique location each time it spawns throughout the match. The order of locations is always fixed so players can learn to predict the next spawn. Once a team establishes control of the spawn location, they can pick up the ball."

Grossman went on to say that carrying the ball in past Halo 5 games "felt like work" for some players instead of being fun. In Halo 5, things will hopefully be different.

"We tried a lot of different tweaks from changing movement speed, changing the way navpoints work, modifying damage resistance, disabling ball throwing, and more. Eventually, we decided that there were three key components to the ball carrier: they needed to win melee fights, be able to survive while arming the ball, and be able to make it to the enemy base undetected," he said. "To meet these goals, we made the melee attack with the ball an instant kill, gave the carrier an extra thrust, and implemented the same 'Spotting' mechanic present in Capture the Flag. While arming the ball, the carrier can use their two thrusts stay alive or to close the gap on the enemy and beat them down. We think that the new carrier mechanics will give players a new skill to learn and enable a skilled ball carrier to win the game for their team."

343 also confirmed that it's bringing back the Fiesta mode, though the developer didn't share any further details about how it's changed since we last saw it in Halo 4.

For lots more on how 343 went about designing the new modes and the customization options players will have for them in Custom Games, be sure to read the full post on Halo Waypoint.

These modes are coming to Halo 5 through an update scheduled later for this month, though 343 has not yet announced when it will arrive. Halo 5's latest update, Infinity's Armory, was released in January. 343 has pledged to continually support Halo 5 with new free content through at least June 2016.

Beyond that, 343 is also working on Halo 6.

I'm not a huge grifball player, but I'm really excited to see how this game plays with thrust and ground pound in the mix.

IMO its great that were getting new maps and stuff but I just think this has been the weakest halo in terms of maps. The visual and setting aspects are very underwhelming considering how nice looking some parts of the campaign are.

Hopefully I can actually find people through matchmaking. I've had no luck with some gametypes in my region. Warzone Assault hasn't worked since launch.

@gottago42: Yeah because 343 gave us a whole 5 gametypes and 8 maps to begin with, not to mention the atrocity that was the Master Chief Collection. They'd owed us these free DLCs or they would have lost a lot of fans and customers.

@gottago42: Except all the H5 DLC has felt like it belonged in the game at launch. Still better than BO3, but 343 has been shady about what the DLC includes. Do the community Forge made maps count towards the 15+ DLC maps 343 will release by June? Right now it looks like they do unless 343 plans on releasing 10+ new unique maps in the next 4 updates. 343 won't answer that question unfortunately. I guarantee if you asked people before launch and told them 75% of the DLC maps would be made by the community in forge, a lot of people would have been less excited for the 'free' DLC.

@b00me: None of the War Zone maps are Forge maps and they're still releasing new Arena maps like riptide so yeah they're releasing new non Forge maps

It's still better than paying for overpriced DLC like Call Of Duty Black Ops 3

@gottago42: Riptide is a variant of Fanthom, it may play different, but it feels like Fanthom, same with Truth and Regret, Overgrowth and Plaza, Empire and Eden. All may play differently, but they feel the same because they reuse assets.

Also, the Battle of Noctus map is the only unique map 343 have added, but it uses the same exact Garages and Cores as the other Warzone maps, the only unique feature is the Monument the rest of the map feels like the other Warzone maps. I understand 343 is trying to keep a balanced feel across the maps, but they all start to feel the same after a while, which leads to it becoming stale. The bosses spawn in the exacts same spots and orders, there's no variety at all in the Halo MP. 343 nailed the core gameplay and weapons, unfortunately they lack of variety in maps, modes, and playlists leads to the game growing stale too fast.

Why do they keep calling the bomb the "ball"? You arm bombs and they explode, not balls

@deathtripp1355: Well the article says "One of the other ball-based modes coming to Halo 5 is an "upgraded" version of Neutral Bomb Assault that, for Halo 5, will be called Assault." Then directly after that it goes on talking about the rules.. of Grifball. It was unclear when glancing it over.

I love Assault.

@gottago42: After H4's epic MP failure and the MCC launch problems do you really think 343 could have charged for community made forge maps and remix variants of old maps and 10 year old Halo modes? Keep being a sheep.

I had butt loads of fun with Grifball back on Halo 3, it was my favorite mode to play with friends back in the good old days in Halo 3 but for Halo 5, I don't see myself having that feel like I did for Halo 3 but I'm not expecting much for Grifball Halo 5.

@davillain-: I don't see how you could find it better in Halo 3 than Halo 5, the movement mechanics alone are going to make it substantially better and more interesting.

@nyadc: Halo 3 was a thing back in the early days of Xbox 360, it was my most well played Halo game since CE and it still is, that is until Halo Reach came along. You gotta admit, Bungie was the master of Halo but 343 hasn't impress me much.

We'll see how this grifball goes. But I'm just going to say there will be zero retaliation if they made a grifball classic game mode. Without thrusts and different spawns and a simple square map. And I didn't see any mention of infection for custom games. So, unless I missed it, customs are still pointless.
