Halo 5 Boss: "We Took Some Digs For Storytelling"

"It wasn't that surprising to me, but the volume of 'give us more Chief' at the end of Halo 5 was significant."

The story for Halo 5: Guardians took a different approach than past entries in the series, as you didn't always play as series hero Master Chief. Sometimes you fought as Spartan Locke, who was leading a team to hunt Chief down. Not everyone enjoyed this deviation from past games, and one of Microsoft's top Halo bosses, franchise manager Frank O'Connor, is aware of the feedback.

"We took some digs for storytelling in Halo 5, but they were absolutely merited. We very much realized that people wanted Master Chief's story of Halo 5," he said in the latest issue of GamesTM, as reported by Wccftech (via NeoGAF). "We definitely marketed in a way that we hoped was going to bring surprise, but for some fans and certainly fans of Master Chief, it was a huge disappointment because they wanted more Chief."

No Caption Provided

O'Connor went on to say that this was a "big learning" that 343 Industries took away from Halo 5.

"Chief we tend to think of as kind of a vessel for your adventure rather than necessarily this major character in the universe. He's really just your entry into the universe," O'Connor said. "But people have become attached to him over the last fifteen years and they've started to sort of fill in the gaps that the character deliberately has for gameplay reasons with a genuine emotional attachment. We certainly underestimated that with Halo 5."

O'Connor added: "It wasn't that surprising to me, but the volume of 'give us more Chief' at the end of Halo 5 was significant and so I think if anything he's slightly more important now than he has ever been, certainly to our franchise."

He went on to tease that instead of adding more new playable characters into the Halo universe, Halo fans can expect the focus for the next Halo games to "shift the focus a little bit to making the world a little bit more realistic and compelling and, I would say, more fun for players who get to inhabit the Chief in the future, pretty much as they demanded."

The next Halo game has not been officially announced, but we know it will have split-screen. O'Connor himself said more than a year ago that Halo 6, or whatever the sequel is titled, was in the works. While a new Halo shooter probably is not coming this year, you can expect the next title will react to the feedback surrounding Halo 5's story and the concerns fans had about it.

"Doubling down on Master Chief story and the amount of focus on him was probably the easiest learning from Halo 5," he said. "That was a really simple thing to absorb and embrace."

You'd think they'd have learned their lesson from Halo 2. These guys are so full of crap.

It was a bad story is the problem, that and the horrible feel of the game. They screwed up the physics to everything and the combat lacked weight that the past games had. Good to know this boss ignored criticism and made up some dumb excuses. Bought an Xbox One for Halo 5 and after playing that horrible game I sold it on ebay. Terrible terrible game.

They brought back blue team which was great, but they just showed up out of nowhere! Not everyone follows the comics and novels and what not, if they add something so big to the universe they need to flesh that out more in the game. Lets be honest the majority of people play the games only.

To me it felt like they were trying too hard to force Locke on the player. You only got to play as the Legendary Blue Team for like 3 missions. Atleast in Halo 2 the campaign was divided more evenly between The Arbiter and MC. The most offensive part was having Locke and his fireteam save Blue Team as the final mission of the game.

They were basically trying to replace the chief with another character. Are these guys just morons? Of course everyone wanted Master Chief's story, but that's not what we got. Halo is nothing without the Master chief, as Zelda is nothing without Link. Halo is the Master Chief's story, without him you just have nothing but side characters, and side stories that don't mean much to the fans, without it's origin.

@oKiRe: Spot on. These people are definintely just that - morons. This is the "franchise manager" of the Halo series spewing dumb garbage, such as "Master Chief not viewed as a major character in the Halo universe to us, herp derp".

That is all we need to know in regards to the intelligence of these dopes at 343 and their inability to provide value as a company. It's hard to do when you're as clueless as these people.

Well, I felt that way when I played Halo 2 and had to play as Arbiter, but playing the game years later I didn't mind it, and that's partially due to them developing Arbiter a bit more with Halo 3 and what have you. I just thought Locke was boring, and his teammates, including Buck didn't add much in terms of dialogue. I didn't dislike it like I did with Arbiter when I played Halo 2, but develop the character more with interesting moments and I think I can look back and not mind it as much.

If you want Halo 6 to be a hit 343i better make the campaign feel like Halo CE. More open, more mystery, more unknown around that corridor, better pace, better scale of powers (Opening scene set the bar to high, and then you were brought back down to reality in H5), do not Phuq up Cortana, or MC. Larger battles with more marines fighting along side MC, More MC being the ultimate bad ass! Zero loading screens. Kick ass cut scenes (H2 from MCC). Give the Guns real sounds not the same BS. It is as if the devs never shot a rifle!

AND FINALLY MORE BEING A MARINE not this politically correct bs. Sgt. Johnson would be ashamed [Mature Rating]. When was the last time you watched a war file, and the Marines were like "Golly Gee wiz"? I am not looking for a swear fest, but a few "F" bomb right after a few Marines tear $h!t Up would be nice!

@sdecker425: The gunplay will never be the same, that was and still is Bungie's best attribute and what 343 should've learned the most from. Say what you want about Destiny, I have, but the gunplay was great. Bungie knows guns.

Say what you will, but I thought Halo 4 had an excellent story. Halo 5 on the other hand had an awful story not just because of a lack of Chief, not just because Locke was a boring character, but because the whole relied too much on Spartan Ops and other expanded universe bs. It couldn't stand on its own and as a result, was more confusing than riveting.

As if I needed a reminder that 343 killed Halo. This article shows just how completely out of touch these companies are in this day and age. This guy was actually surprised that people want the campaign in a Halo game to primarily focus on Master Chief?? Wow, who would have thought?! It's not like he's been the main character and become synonymous with the franchise over the last 15+ years or anything like that. And to dig the hole deeper and say that Master Chief is just a vessel for you to play in, as opposed to an iconic video game character that people have become invested in? What is this dope even talking about?

Spartan Locke was NOT WHAT WAS WRONG WITH HALO 5 PEOPLE! Team Osiris has amazing potential in the world of Halo! And chief's hand full of missions didn't "ruin" it for me! IT WAS THE WRITING!! THROWING MORE MASTER CHIEF IN THE MIX WOULDN'T HAVE SAVED SHIT! YOU HALO FANS ARE THE SAME FANS THAT HATED HALO 4'S STORY! AND THAT WAS ONE OF THE BEST IN THE SERIES! HALO NEEDS GOOD WRITERS NOT A GET RID OF LOCKE AND MORE CHIEF CAMPAIGN!

@nativepixel: Everyone I know, or have spoken to right after beating H5 were very disappointed in how little we got to play as Master Chief. The whole SP felt rushed. Like as if they changed the whole thing right before launch. MP was goofed up with the aiming for months too. For some it was unplayable. Once they patched it the MP became great! Any how the entire thing at Day One felt like a cash grab.

First off, the beginning of this article is wrong! No one cares that we played as a different character, in Halo 2 we played as the Arbiter for about a third of the game. But we didn't care because the story was still dynamite. Halo 2 has one of the best campaigns, even if a few of the arbiters missions were some of the weaker ones in Halo 2. Locke was boring and his squad (except for Buck), is really lame. The story wasn't exactly what they were promoting with their advertisement, the mission layouts were kinda boring because of a lack of those huge set piece battles that halo is known for, and we only played as chief for 3 missions. More importantly, the prometheans are kinda boring bullet sponges and we ended up fighting the same boss around 7 times. Honestly, it's pretty simple to see the changes they need to make.

The Chief is just a vessel? What? Many of us spent YEARS following his full story in the novels and what not. I don't understand how the guy in charge of Halo 5, which brought back Blue Team, could say he's just an entry way for players...

I don't get how the advertisement was supposed to make the game itself a surprise to fans. The only thing I was surprised about was that there were no insurrectionists, crazy cults, uncertainty about the Chief's loyalty, or anything else that made Hunt the Truth interesting and exciting.

I'm also not sure why he's making the Chief out to be a blank slate avatar that players puppet around. The Halo novels flesh out his past and personality and paint a really good picture of who he is.

@ballashotcaller: We will get a cut scene for the game's release in 2018. But its definitely not a 2017 game. After the blowback from H5. I'm sure there has been A LOT of thought on how to proceed with the story going forward.

What I want from Halo 6 is something totally different. At least in the single player. I don't know if that's some kind of open world Far Cry type game, or something like Destiny's 'MMO lite' approach, but after seven games of basically the same kind of thing, I'm pretty worn out. Halo 5 had no punch; it just felt old. Gears 4 kinda the same way. I don't need to relive the golden days of 360 shooters guys, all those games are backwards compatible (or you remastered them). I'm looking for the next evolution of console FPS games, not the one that was so popular everybody copied it for like 10 years.

@Mogan: I'd rather have a more linear gameplay approach with Halo. Master Chief is a super soldier in a war and the open world genre doesn't fit it well because immediacy is a big part of the stories, rather than choice. Metroid, on the other hand, would be the perfect open-world shooter candidate.

@ballashotcaller: I think there's probably room for wide open levels, where you're picking your objectives on a larger battlefield, and then the individual objectives involve entering a more traditional and linear area with scripted set pieces, before getting back out into the larger battlefield and moving on to a new objective. And ideally, completing one objective would alter the remaining ones, or add some more, so that the order in which you choose to tackle obstacles makes for a very different play through. Some levels can have a larger battle raging around you, and some can be more lone wolf or sneaky, but this way you'd shift from the traditional immediacy of story in the tight action sequences, and then a more play at your own pace sandbox to break that up.

I think I mentioned it earlier here somewhere, but a Halo game that took some of the ideas from Medal of Honor: European Assault or Airborne, and blew them out for 2017, could be real cool.

I think I've been spoiled by shooters that have added more RPG like elements of choice and consequence and customization of weapons, powers, or path, and so a straight forward stack of linear levels doesn't really appeal to me unless the gameplay is something real fresh and new feeling. And Halo, at its core, is still the same basic shooter it was in 2001.

The story in Halo 5 was a great premise, but their execution was less exciting than it sounded on paper. I enjoyed it for what it was. Unfortunately, my buddies who were all Halo fans dropped off the bandwagon after 343 screwed up the Master Chief Collection. I didn't think it was such a big deal, I still play(ed) Halo and I love it. But maybe all of this is a good indicator where Halo is actually at, compared to where the devs think it's at.

@Fartman7998: To your point the MCC disaster really hurt the franchise. MCC still has issues that have never been and will never be addressed. Halo 5 story wasn't the best , but they can turn it around with H6. It actually sets up a lot of potential with 6 as far as story is concerned. They can easily bring the didact and or the Gravemind back and make them actually be controlling Cortana and the other AIs. I also believe the fans would love that as well. However if they continue with the plain Cortana s crazy story, H6 will be a big failure and split screen and MP won't matter.

@spartanx169x: Yeah, there are many things about MCC that I don't like, but I'm super disappointed that a lot of people dropped the franchise completely after it released. I understand their reasoning, but I don't agree. The single-player was in tact and that was just as important to me as the multiplayer, and frankly I think it's silly to play the games any other way but that's just my personal preference. Some people are only interested in the multiplayer, that's their business, you do you.

As for Halo 6, I think it has a lot of potential, especially with the multiplayer because Halo 5 and its Warzone was addictive. You're right, they can turn it around. With split-screen and a better story, they will have a best-seller on their hands. I'm not interested in split-screen, it makes no difference to me, but it's a big deal for many people.

@crashmer: Yeah, they really did blow out the lore after Halo 3, and in a way that feels weird because the original trilogy was so straightforward. Now they're fleshing out this universe to a depth it never had outside the paperback novels, but they're still hanging it all on this character that is basically one step above Doomguy in terms of personality and his AI girlfriend/exposition machine, who gets bigger boobs every game.

Master Chief is "just another generic space badass." Playing 4P Co-Op absolutely needs character variety, like what H5 had.

While Halo 5's campaign was indeed lackluster but the main issue with Halo 5 however was the removal of Split-Screen in the first place and got a lot of backlash for that then the campaign. Whoever thought not having Split-Screen in Halo 5 needs to be fired.

@unreal_master: It was to hit 60FPS, including split-screen would have required additional work on the engine to allow it to operate in 30FPS and 60FPS depending on the situation (work that is now being carried out for Halo 6).

@pspearman: while that may be true, People playing split screen would not have cared. 60FPS matters not for the campaign anyway they could have had a compromise by having it for the campaign.
