Halo 5's 4-Player Co-Op Allows for a "Much More Sociable" Story

"We really wanted to focus on a much more sociable experience, especially in our campaign."

Master Chief is no longer a lone wolf. In Halo 5: Guardians, players will always have three companions at their side, whether they are controlled by other humans or the computer. Now, developer 343 Industries has explained why it is focusing so heavily on four-play co-op for the new game. In an interview with OXM (via GamesRadar), executive producer Josh Holmes said the idea was formed as development was ending on Halo 4. Plotting out Halo 5, 343 wanted to tell a "much more sociable" story.

"We were winding down on Halo 4 and thinking about moving to a new console, and we had already planned some of the technological upgrades that we wanted to make to the engine," Holmes said. "And early on we started talking about the types of stories that we wanted to tell and the experiences that we wanted to create, and we really wanted to focus on a much more sociable experience, especially in our campaign."

This led to the idea to make two distinct squads, each with four Spartan characters you can control. In Halo 5, these teams are Blue Team (led by Master Chief) and Fireteam Osiris, the team led by Spartan Locke and charged with hunting down Master Chief.

Halo 5 is not the first entry in the series with four-player co-op. Holmes acknowledged that co-op is a Halo trademark, but said past games did not really do it justice, in terms of gameplay and story.

"I think co-op has always been a big part of Halo's campaign, but in the past it's sort of been treated as a completely separate experience, where you just have three other clones of the Master Chief running side by side," he explained. "The narrative breaks down. One of the big creative goals that we had for Halo 5 was to bring that into focus and support it through the story."

Four-player campaign co-op required a "huge amount of investment" on the technical side, Holmes went on to say. Online co-op (the only way to play co-op in Halo 5 since there is no split-screen) is powered by dedicated servers that Holmes says will enable players to seamlessly drop in and out.

"It's been a really fundamental part of the design process for campaign," he added. "It's flipped the paradigm for the campaign in previous Halos, where solo was very much the focus and co-op was there as an add-on, but wasn't really embraced."

In other Halo 5 news, you can now listen to the game's title song and check out some newly re-designed Covenant vehicles. In addition, Microsoft has teased that Halo 5's story events will change the Halo universe forever. On top of that, Microsoft has confirmed that work has begun on Halo 6.

Halo 5 launches on October 27 exclusively for Xbox One. Microsoft is marking the game's release with a special-edition Xbox One console and a $250 Limited Collector's Edition.

Treating it as a separate experience is the best way to treat any co-op experience. I mean, integrating it in single player only causes problems for solo play rather than just letting a second player drop in any time they feel like in the solo mode. Treating it as a separate experience just makes it a nice bonus. It's what made Splinter CEll, Rainbow Six, and even Saints Row games.

With no split-screen; or matchmaking, the campaign sounds pretty unsociable to me.

Such a shame, as I was really looking forward to this game.

Time after time MS has proved that they don't care about what their customers want (split screen halo) but what makes them more money. I left MS when they didn't let me use my $ 500 forza wheel with forza 5. Sold everything and bought a ps4 and a t300. Even all my windows based computers are now replaced with other os based pcs. Now i am not saying sony is not evil but MS is in a whole other level.

What a joke. He makes this statement after telling us that they've cut out split-screen. This is looking more and more like a money grab. The original xbox with it's Pentium 3 CPU and 64mb of RAM could pull off 4-player split screen, the xbox 360 could do so also- Yet magically, Xbox One has lost that capability and you have to buy multiple consoles and copies of Halo to pull it off.

I don't want to hear another fanboy defend the Xbox ONE's 900p - sub 60fps quality standards. If companies are openly stating that the console can't pull traditionally pretty typical standard stuff off anymore, then yes. We should be having debates on the merits of PS4vsXbox One much much more often.

@Drkoolbeanz: 360 could handle splitscreen even when there were 2 engines (anniversary) so like u say its weird that now the xbox one magically cant handle it.

@Drkoolbeanz: okay, who's the fanboy again?

i thought xone had more 1080p 60fps games than the ps4. ps4 has a bunch of 45fps games like tomb raider and that other shooter no one cares about. like it or not, these consoles are not that different in power. ps4 is more powerful, but not enough to warrant better resolution AND frame rate. it's usually better res and slightly worse fps.

and it's just a "it's not worth the money" issue for them. and they suck for it and deserve the hate. "not being able to handle" is just a lame excuse.

Halo 5 co-op allows for a much more social story! Ironically you and your friends can no longer play together in the same room because we cut split screen! How is this more social exactly?

Real reason for 4-player co-op:

> So we can sell more copies by having people "sell" the game to their friends.

wow 343i you guys really are Dbags arent you?, making the 4player co-op so much better this time around and yet you dont have splitscreen wtf!? so you made it a lot more fun with more ppl but took out the ability to splitscreen?. if that isnt an oxymoron i dont know what is. i really wonder where you got your info for splitscreening anyways cuz when i play MCC i always have matches with guests, also just cuz theres no guest doesnt mean they arent splitscreening. (example. me my friend and my brother all have our own xbox live accounts but still splitscreen.) Ultimately i cant believe you can post this article and expect not to have negative feedback about splitscreen. when your just flaunting that this game would've been even better with the option of splitscreen. and all because while splitscreening the game wouldnt look as good. Graphics arent the main reason i but video games, developers need to stop worrying so much about graphic fidelity and go back to just making good quailty games.and most part stay true to your franchise.

This may sound stupid but I feel like having squadmates reduces some of the player immersion as compared to being a lone wolf. Instead of the feeling of being isolated and/or stranded in a remote destination, scavenging for weapons, back against the wall, etc., you'll have 3 teammates and their silly banter. There better be some really epic warzones to justify the inclusion of 3 NPC A.I.'s

Man, these guys are arrogant. Halo co-op was great, yet these guys poo on it just because of narrative consistencies. Who cares? It was so much fun!

What's new about that? Or 'better'? It's been in it ever since Halo 3... Including the even more social local splitscreen co-op.

I was so excited for this game, but the lack of splitscreen kills it for me.

@Hondje89: I don't usually get much use for split-screen anymore. However, it would have been cool to play Halo co-op split-screen with my nephew. I guess we will play from separate houses or rooms.

@normanislost: Can you just discuss your complaints with the person sitting next to you, rather than being a negative nancy online? Is there even anyone sitting next to you?

The social part is amazing, indeed! Playing in different rooms, houses, cities, states, or countries is amazing! Even though that's been in previous games..... In which previous games also had splitscreen..........
