Halo 5's Aiming Has Changed, Dev Explains How and Why

Not playing so well? This might be why.

If you performed well in the Halo 5: Guardians beta but are struggling now, there may be a reason for that. One of the professional gamers who works at 343 Industries has penned a forum post where he reveals the studio made changes to the aiming system that was in place for the beta.

"During the beta, close-range gameplay felt fluid, mid-range felt decent, and long-range felt flat-out squirrelly," Eric "GH057ayame" Hewitt said in the TeamBeyond forums. "So, our Pro Team went through numerous tests over the course of a few months with our lead sandbox designer, Chris King, and the rest of his team in regards to how our how aim felt leading up to the release. There were some days where our entire team despised it, other days where our team had a split-decision, and finally one day where we all felt extremely comfortable with it."

Hewitt acknowledged that he's had more time than the average player to familiarize himself with the new aiming system. He also says that close-range aiming with the Magnum and other weapons might feel more difficult at first, but says you should stick with it.

"After careful tweaking, constant iteration, and daily discussion, we landed on our favorite fit," he said about redesigning the aiming. "It gave players the perfect blend of sensitivity across all three ranges. Yes, close-range might feel a little bit harder to control at first, but in the long run, you will all learn to adjust to it for the better. Shooting the magnum in this game is very particular, seemingly like how Killer N or StK Tupac shot their pistols in Halo 1. At first, it's going to be tough, but it will get much better with practice. Even to this day, shooting a Halo 1 pistol up-close is extremely challenging though, right?"

In addition, Hewitt said Halo 5's 60FPS frame rate might take some getting used to, as this high frame rate affects things like aim-adhesion. He added that, should players continue to have issues with Halo 5's aiming after a few weeks, 343 may make adjustments.

"I want to reiterate that everyone of us needs to adjust to how the aim-adhesion will feel for Halo 5," he said. "It's a bit tricky at first--using a single-shot weapon to essentially swipe over an enemy as you pull the trigger feels different than before. Also, in the Halo 5: Guardians beta, a bug slipped through the cracks that had a delayed aim-assist problem. You could swipe your reticle over an opponent, and the game would display Red Reticle, but it was after a 5ms delay. Thankfully, we were able to address that issue and fix it before launch. So now, everything should feel very smooth. Nonetheless, we are actively listening to feedback, and we are always welcome to change. So, if players do feel this strongly about the aim after a few weeks, our teams will without a doubt revisit the sensitivity curves in Halo 5."

A video example of Halo 5's new aiming controls is available on Reddit. Replying to this thread, another 343 developer promised that the studio is looking at the video to determine if any action should be taken.

Halo 5 launched on October 27 exclusively for Xbox One. For more, check out GameSpot's review and what other critics are saying.

Just allow people to DISABLE AIM ASSIST! It's utterly ridiculous that this can't be disabled altogether.

If it aint broke no need to fix it. In my eyes its a bit broken now. Once a party of us started really getting hardcore into the game, everyone had the same complaint. Wtf is wrong with the aiming? Everyone i have played with has said the same thing. it is very crippled. i don;t care what this guy says, he knows its crippled. Why else would he be trying to save face releasing such a explanation?

The aiming is crippled, and it wouldn't matter if it was a mouse or controller, lets be honest. The aiming was pretty damn perfect in the Beta, and feels like a mess as it is now. Considering most of the feedback is coming from those with Beta tags on the forum, it's clear that they've changed it for the worse. 2 pointless dead zones and sensitivity messing up towards the corners.

Hope they fix it within the time slot they've promised, because it isn't going to improve. I would have adjusted by now.

I love the controls of this game.. Seriously they are perfect! 60fps with the new controls makes a world of difference. To hell with 1080p, I'd much rather have 60fps on console from now on. The past couple of games on X1 have performed fantastically! Forza 6 and Halo 5, smooth as butter.,.,.. And look great at the same time...

@skiggy34: Agreed -- I'll take 60FPS in MP over resolution on ANY game. I don't much care about how a game LOOKS if it isn't fluid & responsive.

(Now, if they'd just allow disabling of the horrid auto-aim, all problems would be solved.)

The gameplay is fantastic and a lot of the combat takes place mid range, but I do agree that up close takes some getting used to. Especially if you are using the pistol or any burst weapon. Most people will just switch to the rifle though and spray, which works way better.

Not playing so well? It's because you're playing an fps with a controller. You're driving a Barbie Convertible while the big boys on PC are using a mouse and skill and actually hitting what they want to shoot.

And they don't include scrub console crutches like sticky aim, auto aim, aim correction, and turn acceleration.

@Thanatos2k: You're posting to a console-only game thread. Pathetic.

Omni-platform is the only way to game -- it alleviates that idiotic urge to troll based on platforms, control schemes, etc.

@Pyrosa: Sure, omni platform is the correct way to game. But you pick the best platform for the genre. When you own consoles and a PC, why would you EVER play an FPS on consoles?

@Thanatos2k: Yes. Not everyone can perform keyboard gymnastics and crouch with their pinkie finger. I much prefer a controller for movement. I'll concede that a mouse is better for aiming, but you'll never convince me a keyboard is more comfortable or more useful for movement than a controller.

@Tekarukite: Is this a joke? Is your hand crippled or something? Is your pinky finger missing?

You could use that same pathetic excuse for a controller. "I can't press L2!"

"you'll never convince me a keyboard is more comfortable or more useful for movement than a controller."

You're wrong, but you're certain you're not. Amazing. Fortunately the developers who are actually making the games know you're wrong.

@Thanatos2k: How am I "wrong" about comfort? last I checked, that was subjective. so of course I'm certain my OPINION is not wrong. keyboard gymnastics are NOT more comfortable than a controller. they ergonomically design controllers to BE comfortable.

but if you want to get into objectivity, show me a keyboard that allows *analog* movement. you can't. you can't creep on a keyboard like you can with a thumbstick. period. maybe some games allow you to hold down shift and while you're crouched you are "creeping" but it's not the same thing.

if you want to get speculative, I would guess MANY PC gamers that complain about how much they hate the "new" shooting games (Titanfall, Advanced Warfare, Black Ops 3) are probably NOT moving very well with their Master Race keyboards, and lets face it, mobility is WAY more important in these games than in previous generations of shooting games.

but I digress. PREFERENCE isn't right or wrong. I stated I prefer controller for movement over keyboard. and then you called me pathetic and a cripple.

@Tekarukite: "How am I "wrong" about comfort?"

You are, but you're right, that's subjective. But that's not all you said. You said it was more useful for movement, which is false. Try circle strafing with a controller vs a mouse/keyboard. It's factually easier and more precise with m/k.

"show me a keyboard that allows *analog* movement"

Analog movement is pointless. Either you always want to be moving at max speed, or you can slow down (and move silently) by crouching. Tell me why you'd EVER want analog movement?

"mobility is WAY more important in these games than in previous generations of shooting games"

You have no idea what you're talking about.

@Thanatos2k: You can't state that using a controller is less precise and then claim it takes less skill. That's a contradiction. If a controller is more difficult to use, then it would take more skill to use one effectively.

Swinging a baseball bat with one arm instead of two is less precise and takes less skill.

"If a controller is more difficult to use, then it would take more skill to use one effectively."

If you're competing with people who aren't using controllers. Unfortunately, they've done that - no amount of skill makes up for the crippled controls.

@TwinStripeUK: "I just love it when the master race get all salty over a level playing field."

A level playing field is a euphemism for "taking skill out of a game." Who in god's name would play a multiplayer game where the controls were intentionally crippled? And what is even level about this playing field? A sub-level playing field, perhaps.

And fun fact, people cheat on consoles too.

@Thanatos2k: I went to a Battlefield event. Had all kinds of PC scrubs around me, obviously, and I was playing it on PC. They also had the option of using an Xbox controller, so I did that the second round. Out of 64 people, I was in the top 5.

I can use both just fine, don't know why some PC people are incapable of adapting.

The first Halos and Destiny have the best aiming in any console shooter. I don't see how making changes to those systems can improve the game.

@yukushi: Thats the biggest line of bullshit. Who did you speak to? 1 person? The campaign gameplay is like no other. Its stellar. The story is ok, nothing to ruin the game by any means!! The game play is ridiculous and extremely fun. So start spreading the word the other way around since this is probably the 4th time I responded to you in 4 different Halo articles. The campaign is awesome and I suggest you try it and stop telling everyone who IS playing it and DOES love it that it sucks. DO YOU KNOW HOW DUMB YOU SOUND trying to tell the people who are playing it??? LOL play the game then comment man, until then stop telling everyone the campaign sucks when a game scoring a 9 on more than 8 sites says different....

@skiggy34: Its very obvious that you are emotionally involved in the game and unable to think clearly thats ok I sympathize with you but that does not change the fact that they made changes to the single player campaign that most of the old halo gamers did not like, it comes down to this gamers who love MP thinks the game is awesome, gamers who love single player say it sucks.

Feels great to me, I'm actually performing a lot better than expected, and I can actually make shots with the sniper! The weapons should feel a little more unwieldy up close anyway, that's where close combat comes into play, though I'm loving the way the pistol handles in this game at all ranges, that thing is a beast, even with the much improved assault rifle I still use the pistol waaay more.

All in all I'm happy with the game so far, though I do hope to see them introduce a few more playlists over time... at least all the DLC maps will be free, that's a big plus.

I love the aiming. I think the complainers are people who aren't as seasoned at aiming, yet. Maybe they're used to having too much assist(?) It's funny how people never think it's themselves. Maybe it's their controller, too. Make sure there's no slack/ play in your movements. Your controller may be worn. I'm already on my second Xbox One controller because my original had too much dead give before tension was felt. It was affecting my play and I had to pick up sensitivity, but all this dead was accelerate me past my target most of the time and for most games. I'm seriously considering an Elite controller. Now my second controller is starting to show "slight" signs of heading out the door. I like my controllers tight. Once they start to exhibit the least amount of give/ dead movement...even if it's just a wee small fraction of deadness in the springs, I get a new controller. My wife is completely fine with playing on my old controllers, but I feel like it affects my performance.

As long as you don't get penalised for having a good connection like in COD it doesn't really matter what the aiming is like.

Compared to Unreal Tournament where EVERYTHING was squirrelly most modern games (including trash like Aliens Colonial Marines) are actually not half bad.

I think it feels magnificent. Perfect blend of assistance and predictability vs chaos and realism (a gun shouldn't feel too easy to perfectly aim, this is a fight and you should feel out of control unless you're really dominating; but at the same time, we're all playing supersoldiers, so some assistance is fitting).

It's the first shooter I've played since Destiny that makes me feel like I want to play it as much or more than Destiny. It's not categorically better than the also-wonderful Destiny aiming but the 60FPS is really hard to beat. If Destiny was 60FPS I might just keep playing that, but there's something incredibly engaging about aiming at 60FPS and being able to put your shots exactly where you want them without even thinking about it because your brain feels directly linked to the reticle. I've pulled off so many jaw-droppingly cool moments that I don't think I could have done in 30FPS. Stuff that makes me go, wow, I just did that, I'm actually awesome! Even though I'm really not... :D
