Halo dev team increasing hiring

Microsoft's franchise-focused 343 Industries has stepped up hiring for the Reach follow-up, including several senior positions.

Microsoft has made no secret that it will make several more Halo games. Last October, 343 Industries creative Frank O'Connor said the sci-fi series will continue through 2015--at the very least. Since its formation in summer 2009, Microsoft's Halo-dedicated label has been busy extending the franchise into anime, comic books, and new novels while steadily hiring developers for an unknown project.

343 Industries is swelling its ranks at an increasing rate.
343 Industries is swelling its ranks at an increasing rate.

Now, it appears the internal studio has picked up the pace. GameSpot sister site CNET noticed that in the past three weeks, 343 Industries has posted listings for 13 new open positions on its jobs page. [UPDATE] As of July 1, Microsoft's hiring page has added 24 Halo-related positions during the same timeframe.

The open slots include many high-level positions, including lead environment artist, senior concept artist, senior producer, and two senior software development engineers. Other open slots are for roles vital to the early stages of a game's development, such as matte painter/SkyBox artist and storyboard artist. (343 is also hiring a business manager to expand the game's branding.)

Whatever the next Halo title is, it is still a long way off. The next installment in the series, Halo: Reach, doesn't ship until September 14. It will be the last game developed by formerly Microsoft-owned Bungie, the studio that created the series and has developed every game in it save Halo Wars and the $90 million stillborn Halo massively multiplayer project. (Gearbox ported the original Halo: Combat evolved to the PC as well.) Last month, Bungie signed an exclusivity deal with Activision that will see the latter publish multiple installments in an all-new property through 2020.

For more on Halo: Reach, check out GameSpot's new preview and hands-on multiplayer report from the Electronic Entertainment Expo.

The truth is, this franchise needs a sabbatical, and I mean the franchise, no need to make a new Halo in a different genre. Just let people miss it. And hopefully, MSFT has enough engenuity to build and (co-)develop a new franchise because their 1-2 punch per year of GoW or Fable or Forza or Halo, isn't good biz in the long run.

wow, M$ still wants to milk Halo By reading some comments, x360 fanboys are so hypocrites, look, I'm not defending COD or Activision but when they announced more COD this years, everybody were saying that Activision were milking COD but when M$ does the same thing, nobody says nothing bad, remember at E3 2009, it was just months after Halo Wars and M$ was already announcing 2 more Halo games there. Seo, as we can see, if M$ milks Halo, X360 fanboys says: great news or something but when Activision milks COD, X360 fanboys(and everybody) says: die Activision or something. I know, i know, halo will sell millions but COD will sell millions too. This shows how hypocrites x360 fanboys are...

@Axemahn True, im thinking along the lines of Halo Wars but with Halo CE Graphic based.....would of been a failure against Command And Conquer, C&C was in the prime of it's life when Halo CE first came out.

I thought the whole Halo phenomenon was overblown until I watched Halo Legends, the straight-to-disc collection of anime shorts. The episodes and extras on that disc got me really interested in the mythology of the Halo universe and what a rich story it is. It's depth could easily rival sci-fi staples such as Star Trek one day, and we don't have many storylines like that in the gaming sector.

@Tripleseed I'm not denying the possibility of another Halo. At this point, I'm tired of the Halo franchise. I say go a new direction and maybe come back to it some day. The talent they have is too good to keep doing the same thing.

@strayfies i love that, as an ex developer, these kind of people dont need to grovel to get food on the table. These guys are very talented minds and can get a job in any software engineering/gaming firm. Im just glad halo is continuing in some for, ive spennt thousands of hours and possibly money on halo, seems a bit of a waste for it to just end

Duh. I've been saying this for years now. Even worse, a lot of people told me I was wrong. 343 is just doing comics and alternate media. I said "No! This is the studio that's gonna keep pushing Halo games. Most of the biggest creative minds behind Halo left Bungie for 343. No surprise really with so many people saying the Reach beta felt way too much like a Modern Warfare rip-off. But it's nice to see the next Halo games will be back in the good graces of those who birthed it and not the weirdos attempting to move the series away from what made it so great in the first place (epic sci-fi plot with no roots in realism, great music, fun vehicles, and lots of grenades), but Reach will probably sell millions anyway. Who knows? Maybe the beta guys were exaggerating. Let's just hope they keep the Halo series in the 3-4 yrs. release cycle.

I've got mixed feelings about Halo, but I'll say one thing to their credit: at least Bungie didn't go nuts trying to reiterate Halo 40 times in 39 different ways. It's obnoxious to me when a franchise changes up the format in the middle of the series. Their fans are the ones who got them there, and it's insulting the fans when companies try to "get a new batch of players in", at the expense of what already works. In other words, if Bungie were to do something non-Haloish, I hope they'd decide to make a new franchise for it. Their fans put food on their tables, so I don't think it's unfair to expect them to be loyal (and, AFAIK, they have been very loyal).

@penpusher You're reading into this too much. On the home page, all the news bulletin says is, "Halo Dev Team Increasing Hiring". Which made me think, "Does that mean Bungie has been posting lots of new job opportunities?" The article title is not specific. That was all I was saying. Don't blow out of proportion. Are we done now?

Anyone who thinks Halo 3's graphics look the same or even close to Halo: Reach's needs to seriously reevaluate their position. Do they really think Halo 3 is on par graphically with this? Or are they just wearing hate goggles?

@pvspartan36 you know about 343's industry (and so i would assume you know bungies diminishing role) and you know ensemble are gone ... and yet you still didnt think gamespot meant 343 industries? ... youre kind of ignoring your own logic there dont you think?

@cheesytaco69: How does this not mean they are working on another Halo? It's 343 Industries, named after 343 Guilty Spark from the Halo universe. It's a Microsoft studio formed specifically to handle Halo. Get it?

@Torque203: You make a very good point and I agree. People always get all caught up in this whole "milking" of franchises thing, but the creation of new jobs for any studio can only be a good thing.

@penpusher Of course I know about 343 Industries. But the only two studios who have ever released Halo titles are Bungie and Ensemble Studios, and Ensemble is gone. So when I saw "Halo Dev Team Increasing Hiring", I assumed they were referring to Bungie hiring new people for whatever project they are working on, not 343 hiring for another Halo.

"o there milking" "Let it die" What are people talking about. i understand as a fan great more games and as a fan i understand the preservation of the story. to much of a good thing may damage a series. just look at or tv shows. the more seasons the more wacky and messed up it gets but 343 industry is hiring. thats one of the most optimistic news ive heard in a while. lately its all about studios closing down, people losing there jobs due to getting fired, cut backs and closing of studios. how many people are going to finally get a job and be able to take care of there family.

Lets look at the timeline, there was hiring at 343 around a year ago, with some high level producers. If we assume Frankie is lead writer then we might assume that what the game is has been finalized, maybe even the premise for the story. This wave of hiring could be getting things going on early development. My guess is if they rush the game it will be out in a year and a half, if not 2-2.5 years. Assuming no other studio is secretly working on a Halo game, that's a pretty respectable gap. Personally I hope 343 takes their time to polish. If the game doesn't feel on par, even in regards to presentation, compared to Reach, it could seriously hurt expectations. I'm certain they will spend the time to make sure its done right. Halo fans are not picky when it comes to time halo 2 was 3 years off of CE, so long as they put out some books Ill get my Halo fix. Plus with firefight 2.0 and sooo many other games to play, I'm not even going to think about it.

Dear Gamespot: Please do not put "Halo dev team hiring" as the title of your article, implying that Bungie is hiring, when it is 343 Industries hiring. That said, I believe Bungie is working on an RPG right now- at least, some of their job postings make it look like an RPG.
