Halo film coming next year?

French press release for latest Halo novel mentions Halo film coming in 2012 from Steven Spielberg and Dreamworks.

Source: A report on the unofficial French-language Halo blog Halo.fr.

What we heard: According to Halo.fr, a press release from publishing house Milady regarding the French edition of Halo: Cryptum, the latest novel based on the sci-fi shooter, directly references a Halo film coming in 2012 from Steven Spielberg. Translated into English, the line reads, "A film adaptation is set in 2012. It will be conducted jointly by two heavyweights of American cinema: Steven Spielberg and Dreamworks studio."

Will Halo ever come to a bigger screen than the one in your living room?
Will Halo ever come to a bigger screen than the one in your living room?

This corroborates similar reports from 2009 and 2010 that Dreamworks and Spielberg were resurrecting the property, but this is the first time the rumor has been sourced to an officially sanctioned Halo product.

The concept of Halo making the jump to film is not new. At one point Peter Jackson was overseeing the project with District 9's Neill Blomkamp in the director's chair. After a lengthy preproduction period, it famously fell through due to budgetary concerns from the studios funding the project, Universal and Fox.

The official story: After inquiry, a representative from Milady told GameSpot, "We should have put more conditional to this sentence because indeed, we do not have any precise confirmation about this project. Sorry if we made you expect something! :)"

[UPDATE]: Microsoft further debunked the news, telling GameSpot, "The information in the press release in question is inaccurate. We have no plans for a Halo feature film right now. Our focus is on developing Halo: Anniversary and Halo 4."

Bogus or not bogus: Bogus. The book people just chose their words poorly.

There will be a film... eventually... I would, however, hate to see Hollywood have full control. This is why Bungie and Mircosoft, when the movie was first in scripture, wanted more rights. They didn't want it to turn out like most video game movie adaptations do, like crap. Hopefully when it does eventually get made it will be a phenomenal effort and will be an awesome action packed movie.

They need to do this thing. The story trailers from Halo Reach and ODST were so awesome, they need to do this thing already. This thing has at least a far deeper story that something like Transformers and more action too. It's win win. Shame Hollywood is just sitting idle on this.

The different worlds of Halo, Mass Effect, and Gears of War all have the potential to be great film sources. They'll make them when they're good and ready I think (possibly 5-10 years from now), as they all have the potential to be terrible as well.

I thought the guys who did those Halo short movies were great. I really enjoyed those clips and it would be nice if they made a full-fledged movie like that. I'd watch it.

It's going to be made sooner or later. The movie industry is about as dead as the video game industry. It either has to be a sequel, remake, or based on something like a book, game, or musical to get made. I mean they're making a movie about BATTLESHIP for pity's sake!!!!

Strangely enough, Steven Spielberg is directing something after I just stated he rarely did these days. I just saw a trailer for a movie called War Horse. It looks pretty amazing. If he can put the same emotion into Halo by capturing the Human element, instead of an augmented man going on an alien murder spree - It would 100% work. I reverse my original statement about Spielberg not having it anymore (His producer only movies are let downs, personally) He still has it. If Halo ever, rumor or not, lands in his hands? I have faith in him.

Yeah they said a Halo movie was coming out 8 years ago. I'm kind of skeptical, it could be cool but I've never seen a good movie based on a video game. Except Tron.

@foxrock66 The real problem would come with the merchandising. Any Halo movie merchandise aimed at the PG-13 crowd would be seen in some quarters as trying to promote an M-rated game to minors. That would be a real problem for the studio on such a big budget film. That is why I mentioned PG-13 and M. Halo is a fairly mild M (personally, I think Sony must be paying someone off to keep Uncharted rated T as it is more graphic than Halo), but when you get into potentially marketing an M rated game, no matter how mild an M, to minors the studios are going to be hesitant.

That's right, make a movie about a story-less FPS. That'll work, dumb a. At least it's never gonna happen.

Always wanted this around Halo 1-2 time, I hope it does happen though. Spielberg doing a Halo movie would be quite epic if it ever does happen. Hopefully, it would mean there's less chance of yet another game movie horribly burning and crashing.

I don't really waste my time on game adaptations anymore. I suppose I'd catch them at home but between us I pirate movies like that or catch the ones on Netflix..... I wouldn't mind seeing Halo as a film but I won't hold my breath....

Too bad. While I found Reach disappointing, the short films used for the advertising were really well done and I hoped they would expand into a full-fledged movie. :(

@grey_fox1984 I never said it COULDN'T be good, I just said I wouldn't expect it to be. There are three kinds of movies: 1) The ones where they try to make a good movie and succeed, 2) The ones where they try to make a good movie and fail, 3) The ones where they don't try to make a good movie. Movies based on franchises usually suck because it was less about the producers being inspired to great ideas and more about knowing that the movie would sell millions no matter how good it is. Admit it. Everyone reading this article would still see a Halo movie even if all the reviews said it was crap.

Lame. I don't get it. This movie would sell if done right, and both Peter Jackson and Steven Spielberg, either of them, would have made that happen.

@Marscaleb Whooaaaaaa.... you need to watch some of the Halo live action ads. They are seriously epic. Plus the books are amazing too. Arguably the weakest Halo product when it comes to story telling are the games themselves! I would have a hard time imagining a Halo movie possibly being bad.... unless it were made by Michael Bay with Shia LeBeouf as Master Chief or something. And while Spielberg doesn't fill me with nearly as much confidence as Blomkamp (remember that modern Spielberg and the Spielberg of Yore are two different dudes), if they have a solid script and give it to a new talent with promise (as Blomkamp was before District 9- a film made with a bunch of the props from HIS Halo short- jumped him straight to the A-list) we'll finally get a truly great game-based movie. Maybe even a great new sci-fi series, regardless of its source material. The Halo lore is epic!

No one could do it as well as Neil Blomkamp could have done it. They missed a serious opportunity with that film.

@the9thinning, My thoughts exactly. It doesn't really surprise me that it's bogus (yet again...). Hell, it's been bogus for the past SEVERAL years. The concepts been floated around for years yet no one's really made true efforts to materialize it. And to be frank, how could they? When Hollywood gets involved nothing's safe in the video game realm. Maybe MS is one of the few that has the balls to tell Hollywood that if they're not gonna come w/ a genius script & stick within the realm of the Halo universe--then don't bother sending it. If so, I'd give them mad kudos for that (and I'm not even a Halo fan), it means they value how their property is handled and WHO gets to handle it. Capcom could take some cues.....

i don't think that they even need to make a halo movie cause i doubt any one will go and see it. so i think that they are just better off to make the game instead of the movie. cause i don't see people actually wanting to go and see a movie that is based off the best game ever made.
