Halo film coming next year?

French press release for latest Halo novel mentions Halo film coming in 2012 from Steven Spielberg and Dreamworks.

Source: A report on the unofficial French-language Halo blog Halo.fr.

What we heard: According to Halo.fr, a press release from publishing house Milady regarding the French edition of Halo: Cryptum, the latest novel based on the sci-fi shooter, directly references a Halo film coming in 2012 from Steven Spielberg. Translated into English, the line reads, "A film adaptation is set in 2012. It will be conducted jointly by two heavyweights of American cinema: Steven Spielberg and Dreamworks studio."

Will Halo ever come to a bigger screen than the one in your living room?
Will Halo ever come to a bigger screen than the one in your living room?

This corroborates similar reports from 2009 and 2010 that Dreamworks and Spielberg were resurrecting the property, but this is the first time the rumor has been sourced to an officially sanctioned Halo product.

The concept of Halo making the jump to film is not new. At one point Peter Jackson was overseeing the project with District 9's Neill Blomkamp in the director's chair. After a lengthy preproduction period, it famously fell through due to budgetary concerns from the studios funding the project, Universal and Fox.

The official story: After inquiry, a representative from Milady told GameSpot, "We should have put more conditional to this sentence because indeed, we do not have any precise confirmation about this project. Sorry if we made you expect something! :)"

[UPDATE]: Microsoft further debunked the news, telling GameSpot, "The information in the press release in question is inaccurate. We have no plans for a Halo feature film right now. Our focus is on developing Halo: Anniversary and Halo 4."

Bogus or not bogus: Bogus. The book people just chose their words poorly.

Do people even read the article or do they just look at the title and then comment on how awesome the movie is going to be?

@ TheIfym20 I heard they cast Chuck Norris as MC. The mask has even been redesigned to have a beard on it.

I'm sure Spielberg is executive producing, which is fine as long as they get Neill Blomkamp to direct. District 9 was easily one of the best sci fi movies ever made, a true work of art.

I hope it never happens. 1. Halo is horribly generic, and there are enough generic, boring movies out there today. 2. 99% of video game movies suck ass. Mortal Kombat being the only good one.

@vrygar777 Either that or what did they did with Halo Legends and make an animated movie to just finish the series off. I didn't watch Halo Legends yet, so I'm not sure what that was even about rofl

I would much rather have a Halo movie instead of a Halo 4, 5, and 6. They have milked Halo way too much is what I'm trying to say, at least a movie would be something new.

A Halo movie would not turn out very well. Movies based on Videogames rarely work out.

Making it like the games would actually be the best way to reduce cost. They were really just a series of skirminshes. Put since this is Hollywood I'm sure were going to treated to a 1 or 2 pitched battles with a non canon anonymous UNSC marine being the star with very little mentions/showings of Masterchief. That is if the movie ever does get made. I'm glad the project hasn't advanced at all, no way it could live up to expectations after all the restarts and stops.

@deathstream And pray tell, what content in the Halo games warrants an R rating? M =/= R. There are certainly plenty of M rated games that would deservedly earn an R as films, Halo is not one of them. While MPAA is inconsistent at best, I've seen nothing in Halo that isnt already in a plethora of PG13 movies. The only way Halo would get an R rating, is if they pushed the content into darker, harsher territory than any of the games have reached, and then people would cry foul because "it's not true to the games"

Unless it had almost no special effects, there was no way it could have been released before 2013 unless they had secretly filmed half. This article was just a tease to get page hits. They knew it was bogus before they asked. And there won't be a good Halo movie ever because the studio would insist on a PG-13 adaptaion of an M rated game.

I admit, I'm quite the Halo fan, but this rumor just needs to die. Every time I've seen it, I've been excited, only to see my hopes smashed like a Goomba that just got stepped on by Mario. Now, I'm cautiously optimistic.

Video game movies I would like to see: Deus Ex Splinter Cell Before any of you people suggest a Rainbow Six movie, that would not count as a video game movie. It was a Tom Clancy novel before it was ever a series of video games.

IMO, there will never be a Halo movie because everybody knows that they would never be able to make it as good as what the games are. If there IS a movie coming, I'll believe it when I see it.

Finally, About time Samuel L Jackson dusted off that green helmet and made this movie.....*in case its not obvious thats sarcasm* @lycan022 Not all of them suck, there's like 1 or 2 that are ok, and there's usually 1 thats really fun. but that 1 game only happens like once every 3-5 years....

Even if they didn't confirm it as bogus, I can't see a full length film being made this quickly. No actors named, no screenplay finished, etc.

Even if it were true. I doubt there's enough time to make a film in just one year of time. I think movies usually take at least 2 years to make, usually longer.

When it was Peter Jackson and his studio responsible for the work and Blomkamp directing, with Spielberg producing, it was something to look forward to, but they have moved on. Only Spielberg is left and he's long past his prime. Better to let this one lie...unless Jackson changes his mind after The Hobbit is finsihed.

If done by the right person and the right studio, I can see this being more than just a "game to screen adaptation". Halo does have a cool universe to put a film in (and obviously games and novels... and anime...), so why not? Though they wouldn't make a film if they think it won't live up to the franchise...
