Halo film coming next year?

French press release for latest Halo novel mentions Halo film coming in 2012 from Steven Spielberg and Dreamworks.

Source: A report on the unofficial French-language Halo blog Halo.fr.

What we heard: According to Halo.fr, a press release from publishing house Milady regarding the French edition of Halo: Cryptum, the latest novel based on the sci-fi shooter, directly references a Halo film coming in 2012 from Steven Spielberg. Translated into English, the line reads, "A film adaptation is set in 2012. It will be conducted jointly by two heavyweights of American cinema: Steven Spielberg and Dreamworks studio."

Will Halo ever come to a bigger screen than the one in your living room?
Will Halo ever come to a bigger screen than the one in your living room?

This corroborates similar reports from 2009 and 2010 that Dreamworks and Spielberg were resurrecting the property, but this is the first time the rumor has been sourced to an officially sanctioned Halo product.

The concept of Halo making the jump to film is not new. At one point Peter Jackson was overseeing the project with District 9's Neill Blomkamp in the director's chair. After a lengthy preproduction period, it famously fell through due to budgetary concerns from the studios funding the project, Universal and Fox.

The official story: After inquiry, a representative from Milady told GameSpot, "We should have put more conditional to this sentence because indeed, we do not have any precise confirmation about this project. Sorry if we made you expect something! :)"

[UPDATE]: Microsoft further debunked the news, telling GameSpot, "The information in the press release in question is inaccurate. We have no plans for a Halo feature film right now. Our focus is on developing Halo: Anniversary and Halo 4."

Bogus or not bogus: Bogus. The book people just chose their words poorly.

If there gonna do a movie, then lets start from the begining, before halo combat evolved, let it be right from the begining, alot of people havent read the novels & so forth, lets see how the halo universe fell into place, that would be a more interesting concept.

Oddly enough, I hope that if they do make a Halo movie- they don't base it on any of the games. If they just set a stand alone story in the Halo universe that could exist as its own piece of the canon, I think that would be the best bet. Anyone who's read a few of the novels will agree with me- "The Flood" is the only one based on a game and it's easily the weakest. I think "The Cole Protocol" would make a great one. It's got a lot of cool Insurrectionist stuff (including a conspiracy with a group of covenant jackals working with humans), a younger Captain Keyes (lieutenant at the time), a pre-truce Thel Vadamee (The Arbiter) and a team of 3 Black-Ops Spartans whose sole job is to wreak havoc behind enemy lines. I'd watch it for sure, but the lack of Master Cheif would probably piss people off.

If they do make a Halo movie, they had better not screw it up. I'm tired of half-assed video game movies.

no, please no... *reads bottom of article, sigh of relief* it would be hard enough to do the games justice with a movie... but with spielberg directing it would be impossible, looking at how he's been going recently

@Gravity_Slave Peter Jackson had no say in Halo's going forward, the studios killed the project against his will.

I lost a lot of respect for Peter Jackson going viral and saying he was going to direct Halo himself. No problem doing a blah remake of King Kong though....

@Johiden... MS would not allow a Halo film to turn out like the rest of the game-to-movie adaptations. This is their premier franchise and would rather not release it then have it be another Uwe Bol catastrophe. There's too much at stake for the franchise. So if we do ever see a Halo film come out, imo, it will be insanely over the top.

@Devin-B Not to belittle your argument because both Spielberg and Dreamworks are a good choice for a Halo movie (Better than a stupid Independent movie), but they have both flopped in their careers. Halo (In video game form) does NOT translate a AAA story. In the books it does. But even basing the movies off the books most fans will have no idea what's going on, who is talking, where they are, etc. Why? Because most fans never even touched the novels. Now for the floppy side of things. Spielberg can't always make gold, an example is "Ai", a movie with extremely high hopes that mildly succeeded because it was considered legendary film maker Stanley Kubrick's last film which Steve claimed to have made come to life... which he didn't. "1941" is another failed movie of Spielberg's as a comedy, "The Lost World" which showed that Steve isn't perfect at sequalizing, "Hook", while not bad, wasn't exactly a timeless fantasy classic, and "War of The Worlds" which shows even Steve's take on drama can fail if put into a none realistic setting. Spielberg's specialty is drama, and honestly there isn't much of that i Halo even in the books. Sure there are some serious moments but for the most part it's just Hammy and action packed. It could still be a decent movie just not gold.

Meh, sounds like a bogus story. Still I'm all for a Halo movie if done right. Those live-action trailers for Halo 3, ODST, and Reach show it has potential if given a good budget and the right creative team. I just hope that if they do make a Halo movie that they set the story in the games' existing universe rather than simply retelling the games themselves. That would just be a waste of film.

@GabrielOnuris and @MLT-ShadowRaz Agreeed Deus Ex would make a great movie. I think Uncharted, and Metal Gear would do great as well. Gears could be good if done right, but most action heavy games wouldn't translate well enough to the silver screen. I also wouldn't be surprised if they ever do like a pixar verison of Ratchet and Clank.

I really would prefer P.Jackson and Bloomkamp as a life action movie, but if it will be all CGi, it's hard to find fault with Dreamworks and that Spielberg guy--no one has heard about. ;)

I'd rather Halo just stays a video game series, and doesn't spawn a series of movies. It probably wouldn't turn out that good.

I couldn't see Spielberg and Dreamworks making the movie anyway. It all seemed too good to be true. Don't get me wrong, if these two titans of Hollywood did make the Halo movie, it would be up for movie of the year.

"We have no plans for a Halo feature film right now. Our focus is on developing Halo: Anniversary and Halo 4" Screw that Microsoft make the movie!! I would LOVE a Halo movie (if done well). That would be absolutely frickin awesome. Quite possibly make a decent trilogy too. It will happen.. And when it does I'll be loving it.
