Halo Forge Slowly Transformed What It Means To Play Halo

GameSpot may receive revenue from affiliate and advertising partnerships for sharing this content and from purchases through links.

On the 15th anniversary of Halo 3, we look back at how the map editor transformed Bungie's classic series.

Halo 3 is celebrating its 15-year anniversary today, September 25, 2022. Below, we take a look at how one of its marquee new features, the Forge, had a massive impact on how fans think about and engage with the beloved shooter series.

A gigantic futuristic Jenga tower, a medieval castle with jeeps speeding through it, and a frying pan full of metal flapjacks. These maps are just a small sample of some of the most memorable and iconic Halo Forge creations that have been built by fans over the years.

Now Playing: Halo Infinite | Update – September 2022

"As you can tell, Forge is extremely important to Halo," Forge YouTuber Andrew "Ducain23" Franklin told GameSpot. "It provides ways to play the game that have never been thought of before."

Jenga, Medieval Rail and Flapjack Frenzy--the maps mentioned above--only scratch the surface of the lake of unique fan-created game modes created in Forge's 15-year lifespan. Modes that put players in a trash compactor or in a zombie-filled mountain showcase the variety of fish swimming in that lake.

Halo Forge--originally a map editor that was meant to let players make minor tweaks to developer-created maps--has turned into something fantastic over the decade and a half. It's spawned a vibrant community of creators who have built thousands of maps, making Halo much more than an adventure about space marines or traditional competitive modes like King of the Hill.

"Forge allowed for that possibility," Halo Forge writer Micah Bandy told GameSpot. "I remember all the fun minigames and maps people created with such basic tools, classics like Duck Hunt and Halo on Halo, modes that brought people together for a fun party-game-like experience."

After launching with Halo 3 in 2007, Forge has been expanded upon by later releases like Reach and Halo 5. It's become a much deeper tool than fans, as well as Bungie, originally envisioned. The upcoming Halo Infinite Winter update should continue that trend by making Forge an even deeper toolset than ever before.

"Forge as many people consider it, began as a straightforward tool in Halo 3 allowing players to make simple adjustments to maps," ForgeHub admin Nick Bird, who goes by Sir Iron Wolf in the Halo community, told GameSpot. "The simpleness of the editor did not stop people from finding glitches that allowed for more advanced techniques to develop."

Fans expected much of what they knew from the first two entries in the Halo franchise: a memorable single-player campaign that followed the super-powered Master Chief and deeply engaging multiplayer that could be played until fingers grew numb. But both experiences had a limited shelf life and would grow old like they did with every shooter that had launched before 2007. Forge expanded the promise that came with both those modes that extended the life of each Halo game by years.

Forge changed what it meant to play Halo.

"I remember being astonished," Bird said. "I was still in school when Halo 3 was released and every day I would finish my homework and then hop on Halo with my friends till my parents told me to go to bed. Back then, you could only have 100 maps saved and I remember constantly running out of space. I ended up making other Xbox Live accounts just to save more maps I made or calling up a friend to hop on and save a map I was working on."

What began as a simple tool that allowed creators to place blocks, crates, vehicles and weapons has blossomed into a canvas of minigames, original maps and experiences that can't be found outside Halo. It was a precursor to Overwatch Workshop, Grand Theft Auto Online custom games, and Fortnite Creative. It's become the reason players continue to invest time and energy into Halo long after standard multiplayer has grown stale.

A beta version of Forge is coming to Halo Infinite on November 8 alongside a bigger update. This version of Forge will let players scale objects to whatever size they prefer, combine weapons to create new abilities, and give them a deeper base toolset.

Some players have gotten early access to Infinite's Forge through the Co-Op Flight program. Even though the mode hasn't been ready for player-side testing, long-time veteran creators have been impressed by what's possible with the latest iteration of Forge.

"It's a beta release, so I'm managing expectations, but I have good reason to have a positive outlook for the tool," Carson Barry, a creator who has been using Forge since Halo 3, told GameSpot. "Even the half-busted build that people accessed [...] is blowing previous titles' editors out of the water, for both performance and visuals."

Halo 5's Forge mode included a rudimentary scripting system that let creators implement enemy AI and other features, but it was a "pain to work with," according to Barry, who's deeply experienced with scripting within Forge. Halo Infinite's scripting feature will be much deeper than its predecessor, making many of the features that were difficult to implement in Halo 5 seamless in Infinite.

"The visual scripting provided by the node graph interface in Halo Infinite frees us from those issues, and makes drafting in-game much more user friendly," Barry said. Creators who have already jumped head-first into Infinite have been creating incredibly impressive maps. They've designed Mario Kart-like power ups, Andy's room from Toy Story, and much more.

We won't see a fully-featured Forge on November 8 since it's only a beta release, but a stream of content should slowly improve the workshop mode over time. Halo Infinite may have launched in 2021, but if Halo 3's Forge is any indication, its best content is yet to come.

"The art-studies, detailed remakes, and scripting R&D that people have been doing have been great to see, and that's with broken, incomplete, software," Berry said. The actual retail build, and the stability and infrastructure that come with it should only serve to take things to greater heights. It's all excellent proof-of-concept work and I can't wait to see these ideas get stitched together into actual gameplay designs. These guys are just getting started."

It's really sad how little content we get in games at release, or how devs just cut stuff. I've been sick of forge world maps since Reach. I'm tired of random UNSC structures with no purpose being dumped into a random grassland or bottomless pit. It's so unimaginative.

I know Infinite Forge is capable of more. But what is 343 gonna give us? More UNSC structures with no purpose in a deserted area above a bottomless pit.

Dead franchise.

Its so unfortunate when the likes of Phil Spencer and Xbox buy up big publishers. If you disagree, look at what Rare have done the past 2 decades and then come back to me with an intelligent reply.

@andrewsqual: yea I mean you're exactly right but you're taking about rare. Yea they made some awesome games in the 90s but you're comparing it too halo lol. I mean yea halo is got a downward trend but halo 1 made them a lot of money too keep on making more halo 1 and 2 and 3 etc. Probably one of the best selling Microsoft games if not the best. It probably sold more copys of halo 1 than all rare games ever combined in thier history. Lol that's not really a good comparison. You should be comparing rare with like a smaller studio. Like don't get me wrong there's some good classics in rare like golden eye perfect dark. But really should find another comparison. Talking about halo franchise that all those games that rare has probably doesn't even have a quarter of halo sales. Just the fact they keep making them and too your point they're not really making rare games. But I'm sure if they had a rare game be one of the best figures in sales, they would of kept making them.

the best part was that i could turn the large-ass maps into something that could be enjoued with 2 or even 4 players. except when a barrier gave in and people managed to escape

Yea can 343 done a better job yea of course any dev team can. Making halo infinite with part of it in production while covid was going around, definitely going too have problems. Just felt like they should of waited until it was ready. Should of came out this year. It's the new trend every game is buggy missing features when it comes out on release date it's just the way it is. Definitely wouldn't surprise me if the new God of War ragnarok won't even be ready. They promised its coming out this year right, right. I feel like 343 did good and also bad but halo isn't that bad. If bungie came back and said let's make a new halo, do you think it would be the same nope it wouldn't. The old bungie done been and gone, not even same team anymore. A lot of the employees left went too other dev teams form thier own studios. Who knows bungie could of made it worse we don't know. Look at battlefield 2042 you had old cod guru Vince zampella take over as director. It's missing like over 100 features and doesn't play like battlefield. Plays more like cod. That's just an example cause technically it's like halo infinite came in a buggy mess, missing like every feature plays like cod, and someone that made the greatest old cod games. He made the old modern warfares, but battlefield 2042 could of been better. Bungie probably done the same with halo.

@sakaixx: yea campaign form but I'm talking every feature like forge bugs cleaned up. Cause multi player was a mess and buggy. Obviously we know couch co op they canceled but online co op still on the way right, so technically still missing. So if those features should of came out with the original game not later in patches cause it wasn't ready yet. But I'm fine with campaign that's good for me. Still doesn't necessarily mean it was ready

@blaznwiipspman1: Yep..... all you need is for another senior staff member to BAIL and any second now 343i will turn this franchise, that they themselves have been running over a decade now, around.

Any second now its going to "get better" than Halo Reach.

Even reaching the same level would be an accomplishment for this 900 person strong studio and backed by BILLIONS too.

if you're talking about bonnie, she left for health reasons. We got someone else to replace her, and hes going to do a fantastic job. Halo Infinite is a fantastic game, it scored a 9 here on GS, and its widely praised everywhere. The only issues are the slower pace of content, but soon we will have forge, and coop not long after. Keep the faith brother, things will get better.

One thing I think MS should have avoided is to support the xbox one and one x. Its not easy having support for older consoles, it divides the team. They need to be all in for xbox series.

For how long have we been hearing about Fable being in development? Probably the first year of the Xbone release.

These are not money makers anymore, so MS is trying to cut the cord, but without frustrating its fans.

And Gears is a pretty renown franchise. If they were working on one, we would know, this is not a game that takes 7 years to develop afterall. But then again, with MS management, maybe it will take them 10 years lmao. When/If they acquire Activision, they're just gonna double down on what works/prints them money, so the likes of Gears are gonna be forgotten x10.

Seems like they are working to make Halo: Infinite last as long as they can. What makes you think Gears is canned? Just because Rod left?

No. Its guaranteed to be dead because when gears 5 came out, it didn't get any traction. Its an outdated and tired as hell franchise. People have seen enough of it, and unless there's a reboot, this is not a money maker anymore. If they were working on a sequel, we would've known that a long time ago, but nope, nothing. If MS gave us sales numbers and GP wasn't a thing, you could've clearly seen the massive decline in sales. This series is simply not what it once was because it didn't evolve with time.

Gears 5 had a slow start, but I'm not sure what you mean by "zero traction." Do you actively play the franchise, and are you involved with the community?

The tournament scene was viewed as very successful for "zero traction" and every time the game is streamed by Microsoft it's got 8,000 to 10,000 viewers which is pretty good for almost three years later.

The game is also on game pass which definitely seemed to boost its online activity... I still get into games regularly quick. Microsoft has a lot of money to work with and while I can assure you that Gears 5 sold fine, I can also assure you that Microsoft doesn't worry about game sales and numbers like Sony does - because Sony doesn't have an eco-system or a service even remotely close to Game Pass and what that's offering.

GOW5 is actually a great game, and it looks VERY good on Series X/PC or wherever you are playing really. It doesn't get enough credit. As a game I would say it's much better than Uncharted or Last of Us which feel more like overrated popcorn flicks on training wheels.

I played it omega actively back in the 360 days, but not anymore. The thing is, you can see hundreds and hundreds of videos on youtube of actual fans that are complaining about Gears being dead. The only thing Gears 5 did is give Digital Foundry a graphical benchmark for a couple of years lol.

Look at this. 340 players online. If this is not dead to you, i don't know what is. There's no money to be made from Gears. Its over.

@hardwenzen: COD is a multiplatform title, why would they can halo after they own COD? If they were going to can halo, they would have done it 10 years ago like sony did with their killzone franchise. Ooff. Remember killzone??

Halo will always have a place. I hope they're working on DLC now, adding a separate biome.

Doesn't matter if its a multiplat or not. MS doesn't need a game to sell their systems now, its what GP does instead of a single game. What we're currently seeing are the last few years of Halo. Its going away, and possibly never return. Its over.

I'm still trying to figure out how 343 messed up Halo MCC/5/infinite so badly.

Like how can you make a collection of games known for it's multiplayer, be unplayable for years?

then how can you release a Halo game with no couch Co-op? Then say that, "It was a bad idea that we did that. And the next one will have it". then not put it in for the latest game. And then to put the cherry on top. They didn't put couch co-op in, because they wanted to add in stuff no one asked for.

And to top it off with some syrup on top of the cherry. We STILL don't have forge mode in this game.

@blaznwiipspman1: Yeah, But I would rather press a button to get to it. Then following a several-step game glitch that can sometimes not work.

And, the fact that you have to do all this for a mode that should be a staple to Halo. Is also my point.

@hardwenzen: You totally missed the worst part. BF2042 is $60 and Titanfall II is $30 on steam. While Halo infinite's multiplayer is completely free.

Halo Infinite has fewer players than BF2042 and Titanfall II for multiplayer. While being, free.

@illegal_peanut: Yep, and as someone still playing it occasionally, it's obvious the free to play model has completely failed. Nearly every player in the opening lineups of matches is wearing armor that they payed for, whether through the shop or through a battle pass.

You'd hope the population would be buffed by some strong % who stay playing it completely for free. But they are simply not there

@hardwenzen: You totally missed the worst part. BF2042 is $60 and Titanfall II is $30 on steam. While Halo infinite's multiplayer is completely free.

Halo Infinite has fewer players than BF2042 and Titanfall II for multiplayer. While being, free.
