Halo Infinite Could Use Games As Service Structure

The "infinite" part may be a clue.

Halo Infinite appears primed to get its big debut at E3 2019, but it may be a very different kind of game. Comments from Kiki Wolfkill, the head of Halo trans-media at 343, has added more reason to believe that the studio is imagining this as an ongoing game or live service.

"We have to be able to change content quickly," Wolfkill said at Fortune's Brainstorm Design conference. "We can't afford to wait three years every time we drop a new product and have it be a black box because the games kids are playing are changing every week."

Now Playing: Halo Infinite Has Splitscreen And Customization - GS News Update

The reference to a three-year development cycle as outdated, paired with the title of Halo Infinite itself, would seem to suggest that Microsoft and 343 are planning this entry as an ongoing game of some sort. That would also make sense alongside her reference of games that kids are playing currently. It sounds like a reference to games like Fortnite, which issues regular challenge updates and new equipment between its large seasonal updates.

Wolfkill also referenced "having a set of rules that people can engage with and buy into for years to come."

As the head of of trans-media, Wolfkill's focus is how to tell different kinds of Halo stories across a variety of media. That means she may not be directly involved in game development, but she probably is planning other media and storytelling that takes advantage of the story established in Halo Infinite. That could mean we see stories regularly updating in the game and continuing through other media, or criss-crossing through both.

The studio recently had to respond to concerns about microtransactions, following a job posting. It has also specified that it will not have paid loot boxes.

This news comes as Halo head of franchise development Frank O'Connor has recently confirmed that Halo Infinite will hit PC and Xbox One, rather than wait for the next generation of consoles. And given the popularity of battle royale, we've seen a good deal of speculation about Halo adopting the play format--though 343 is staying mum on the subject.

If this does happen, then MS is just being stupid again. People want a fun single-player and multiplayer experience in Halo. Nothing about GaaS is great. SOT is a Gaas game, and it is not close to a great pirate game even though it has more content.

So over every game developer thinking they need to add a Battle Royale Mode now. Just. Stop. It.

Games as a service? No thank you. Can we go back to the good ole' days of when developers actually released full games and those bs "DLCs" were actually full expansions? ummm, k? Thanks.

At least with GAAS there is little or no upfront 'investment' you are risking by trying the game. ie playing Fortnite or Apex legends might not be your thing, but it was free to try it was it not?
Same will apply to Halo Infinite. there's nothing to lose with Game Pass so all your statements of 'Vote with your wallet' is void. Don't like Halo, try another game or don't renew trial/subscription. Simple.

The thing that gives Game Pass and its games like Halo Infinite potential is that it can be supported properly under a subscription without having ridiculous or unfair microtransactions.

Also used game re-sales can stop killing the industry.

I feel that the developer and corporate side have two different views of halo. "Is like EA speaking"

Halo does not need to compete for kids attentions. It never had too!! It didn't need game as a service to be fun . Wolfkill's doesn't know halo core audience. or maybe it is not her job to care. Kids are easily swayed by the latest trends and don't stick with something to long. If you fail at grabbing their attention , and you start to cut most of your game or even half the game . you can't keep you core player happy. It is going will fail.

Because most of the development was spent on keeping it's fickle portion of player base happy . and not keeping long time fans happy. No one is going to be happy, and everyone will move on

Spartan Ops for Halo 4 was 343 and Microsoft playing with this feature years ago. While games as a service may be acceptable in Halo via Multiplayer or a feature like Spartan Ops or Warzone, I just want it to have an incredible campaign and rock solid multiplayer.

The problem with trying to take an iconic franchise like Halo and play catch up with trendy games is that it starts corroding the bedrock that made the series great. I personally think it would be better for Xbox Studios to create a new IP fitted for these new ideas instead of trying to jam Halo into a new genre. Make Halo the best it can be, innovate within the parameters of the genre, but trying to change it's entire format is very challenging.

At the end of the day, if you are unable to innovate enough to keep the series going on what made it great, it might just be time to retire the franchise. That outlook of course is from a fan standpoint, however, Halo still brings big money, so they'll continue to put out games as long as it makes money, for better or worse.

I think they had a good idea going with Halo 4's "infinity" series or whatever it was called. That would be a a good model to follow as long as they could make it better than what was offered in Halo 4. Quarterly content drops with a focus on furthering the narrative, adding new locations, and adding additional gameplay content would be great for a Halo game.

already off to a bad start i see... what did anyone expect coming from microsoft? they have yet to prove themselves this entire console generation, after all. are xbots finally beginning to wake up? are they starting to feel let down by xbox? i think so. if you thought x1 sales were bad this gen, you have seen nothing yet... then again, i don't think it is beyond the realm of possibility if microsoft pulls out of the traditional console business next gen -- as in, they might go all in on streaming and will have no reason to put out a dedicated console to play games on locally. that appears to be their strategy at this point in time. whether they pull out or not (of traditional consoles), it won't surprise me in the least either way.

While I doubt they will be adding content for the campaign (The story has always been a complete experience upon release). This does sound like it would work for something like Spartan Ops (if they bring it back, which I hope they do).

I'm okay with this as long as I can earn rewards without having to play for 3 weeks to unlock one of em. Halo has always been good to me, and I dont see that changing unless they completely mess it up trying to be like other games. This goes for Borderlands 3 also. Time to bring back the great shooters we used to know and love with its own way of innovation.

*Sigh* COULD? Let me know when there are actual details and I'll care. (All they really need is a good, long co-op supported campaign and classic MP)

Also they've already said no paid lootboxes, and the ongoing support they're still giving H5 and MCC has good implications too...

Every time I see Games as a service or live service, I want to bash my head into the nearest wall. It's never implemented right, and just means that games get tiny bits of content over a long period, and are often infused with obnoxious microtransactions.

I miss the days of expansion packs. Buy a packed base game (so I'm talking mid 2000s here, and on PC due to the expansion pack), and then buy an expansion pack full of content for a fair price.

I like Halo, but I'm not buying it if it's a live service game. It'll be a rental and I'll put my money towards another game instead.

Bwahahahaha! I post in random game news threads about XYZ title becoming a "mulitplayer co-op online battle royale e-sports ready shooter with light RPG elements and cosmetic-only microstransactions etc etc" that GS mods like to delete, but....sadly is appropriate in this case.

The game-as-service model is becoming a blight on the industry, quickly strangling creativity and leaving a big pile of pablum for the mindless masses to lap up. No wonder I've found other things to do with my time.

@attirex: GaaS'y isn't actually that bad, it's just that it's routinely combined with the 'minimum viable product' model, ie. release broken, fix later. And P2W, of course.

@Barighm: Actually no. She/they are going to where the money is. As long as folks buy into this business model the more it will thrive. Its a whole different generation now (sigh). I have not purchased anything since the start of the XB1/PS4 era because of this and other crap going on in the industry. But I understand it's no longer meant for me.

@V-Nine: Actually, yes. Halo's core fanbase has always expected a kickass campaign and multiplayer. What marketing executives want, or think we want based on some other game's success, is NOT reflective of what the fanbase wants, so, yes, she is out of touch with her audience.

She is obviously playing follow the leader. That hasn't really worked out for Halo so far.

So everything that made Halo games Halo games is going to be stripped away to become another game with an identity crisis. Also, every time I read or hear the words "Battle Royale" I want to punch somebody. That's code for, "Yeah, we have no fresh ideas." I have not and will not buy into games as a service so if that's the way they are going, it'll be the first Halo game I don't touch. A lot of productivity software is using this model and I've stopped buying them as well. Fortunately, when it comes to productivity software, there is always an open source alternative so they'll never get my money. As far as games as a service goes, for every one game that uses this model, there are thousands that don't so I'm good. Stop gearing your games to kids with rich parents and I'll start playing them. But when you can make $500 off fewer people as apposed to $59 off of more people and do less work, I can't blame companies for catering to the suckers.

@kstaggs87: That is NOT what it means in the least. Games as a Service means it will have long tailed support over years, adding new features and content...you know, like Halo 5, Path of Exile, Warframe and Sea of Thieves have been doing at no additional cost to customers. That does not mean there won't be some sort of microtransactions which also is not necessarily a bad thing if done right.

@Barighm: Here I like to consider that the MTless Halos had 10 armor sets max, with basic color patterns. If through MTs they add 30+ with all sorts of weapon skins etc. extra I don't see a big problem.

Sure people like Angry Joe get mad because they expect to unlock every piece of gear. But in my opinion in a multiplayer game with 500 cosmetic pieces it shouldn't even be the goal. You play the game for the fun, and wear what happens to be unlocked and look decently cool. If the only motivation to play is to unlock the next item then I don't know what to say.

Ofc if they add weapon damage bonus cards and crap like that then the system is shit.
