Halo Infinite Dev Explains Why There Won't Be Assassinations At Launch

A lot of people don't use them, so 343 won't include them in Halo Infinite at launch.

Halo Infinite developer 343 Industries has explained why assassinations won't be featured in the game's multiplayer at launch, which is something that the studio initially announced in July. Senior mission designer Tom French told Eurogamer that 343 is a fan of assassinations but its own data showed people tend to turn them off.

"[Assassinations] are not in for launch," French said. "We actually really love assassinations... but what happens at a lot of levels is people just turn them off because there's a gameplay disadvantage to it."

Now Playing: 5 Things To Know About Halo Infinite's Multiplayer Preview

Performing an assassination in Halo leaves your character exposed and vulnerable as the animation plays, so it makes sense that people would turn them off. On the flip side, performing one can humiliate your opponent, so it's a real power move if you can pull it off.

French said 343 is still considering adding assassinations to Halo Infinite over time, when the studio can find a way to make them feel "meaningful" and "accessible."

It's not a surprise that Halo Infinite won't have assassinations at launch, as 343 confirmed this during the Halo Infinite multiplayer livestream in July.

Halo Infinite's first public beta test took place at the end of July. If you missed out on that one, another test is coming up. We don't know when or what kind of content it will offer, but the only way to get in is to sign up for the free Halo Insider program.

In other Halo news, 343's Kiki Wolfkill recently discussed some of the challenges of bringing Master Chief to the small screen with the upcoming Halo TV show.

Just put in the ability to cancel it like apex did with its finishers, there's nothing wrong with assassinations, there's no disadvantage to it. You literally don't have to, its still a one shot kill to the back if you just melee them instead of performing the assassination. Therefore it's already entirely a player base decision that can be made in a moment.

good. everything else is so dynamic in the game that assassinations always felt like "oh the game is stopping for a qte scene"

next theyll do what dead or alive did and add counter-assassinations and climbing qtes and driving qtes and other "be at this exact spot while the other guy is at this exact spot and something happens"

look its so hollywood!

Translation: There's a bug we're too lazy to fix and we're not delaying the game again.

WTF 343i? As a big Halo fan this is total BS. I understand the reasoning behind the decision and that they want the verses multiplayer to be as honed and as tight as possible but give your fans the option. Smh!

In the words of Angry Joe,

“343i gone f….d it up.”

@sladakrobot: We want the choice! Sequels to games shouldn’t be taking choice away from the player. They should be adding MORE choice. Not less choice, less maps etc.

@shawnanthony: going to reserve judgement until I put some time into Infinite's multiplayer... but I agree with you.
the movement abilities in Halo 5 really help to keep the mp fun after nearly 6 years on the market and, in my opinion at least, are part of what makes Guardians pvp the best across any of Halo's titles...and I've been playing since CE on the original Xbox.
You'd think I'd be one of those Halo purists constantly talking up Halo 3's mp... nope, when I occasionally thrown In MCC and a Halo 3 map comes up, I'm nearly bored by the end of it.

@twelveoucer:

Yep Halo 3 verses in MCC can be a very painful ordeal at times. I much rather Reach or H2/H2A. Strange, I remember H3 verses being awesome back in the day.

Not a biggie in the scheme of things. They'll probably add it at some point.

@gr4h4m833zy: The MP and Campaign-Mode in Halo Infinity are seperated so after the needed downloads of updates and patches, the Campaign-Mode should be fine to play offline.

@sladakrobot: There are still pop-up/draw-distance issues when you look towards the grey mountain (can’t you even go on that mountain either?), there’s a severe lack of particle effects and DoomGuy moves around a lot slower than he did before, which I suspect is a frame rate issue that will be patched later on.

Did I miss something? In the past, assassinations were completely optional. You hold down melee if you want to assassinate or just tap if you want the quick kill. It wasn’t like you were forced to assassinate everytime you got a melee kill from behind.

I happen to agree with this . I would never use assassinations in MP. Even if the animation only takes a second or two , you are still vulnerable until the animation finishes. Better to melee someone in the back and get the kill and move on. I don't even know how you fix that no solution I can think of makes assassinations viable unless you are in a casual playlist and don't care

Does that mean no assassinations in the campaign too?

@DarkCaptain3: Good question. It's not detrimental in SP like it is in MP. But then again they are sharing the code base between the two so I would say it's 50 / 50 whether they are in campaign or not
