Halo Infinite Dev Responds To Frustrated Fans, Asks For Patience

Halo community director Brian Jarrard acknowledges that the Halo Infinite road "hasn't been easy."

Halo Infinite's road to release hasn't exactly been smooth. Developer 343 Industries has experienced a good deal of high-level staff turnover, the game was delayed from its place as an Xbox Series X launch title, and what we have seen of the game has been underwhelming in the eyes of some in the Halo community.

Halo community director Brian Jarrard responded to these concerns on Twitter recently. He said he understands the frustration fans are feeling, because he has felt it too. He asked for patience and understanding as 343 finishes the game.

Now Playing: Halo Infinite Gameplay Demo | Xbox Games Showcase 2020

"As an avid fan of many properties (games, movies, TV, music) I 100% understand and appreciate the passion the Halo community has. I also understand the frustration when things don’t go the way you want or it feels like you're somehow being wronged or not heard," Jarrard said.

The developer said he feels fortunate to be able to work on a franchise as large and impactful as Halo, and with that comes a dedicated and passionate community of fans. "It's not easy but I'd rather have people care--and even be mad--than not give a damn. Thank you," he said.

For Halo Infinite specifically, Jarrard said the journey has not been without its struggles, with 2020 in particular standing out as a difficult year.

"The Infinite road hasn't been easy. This year in particular has been incredibly challenging," he said. "We have hundreds of developers who truly only want to make the best Halo game they possibly can. It pains all of us when the community is hurting."

343 is planning to share a high-level update on the development status of Halo Infinite before the end of the year, and Jarrard said this message won't be enough for some.

"No update is going to satisfy everyone," he said. "We want to turn the corner as 2020 comes to an end and leave the challenges of this year behind us and look ahead to 2021. We are committed to bringing you along on this journey, we just ask for bit of patience and understanding."

Regarding the staff turnover at 343, Xbox boss Phil Spencer explained to GameSpot recently that it's nothing to worry about.

"I don't have any specific concern about 343. I actually think in the long run, turnover is a healthy thing because we want people who are really motivated by the things that they're working on," he said.

In other news, a rumor recently popped up claiming that Halo Infinite would have a battle royale mode, but 343 quickly shut that down.

Halo Infinite was originally set to release as a launch title for the Xbox Series X|S, but due in part to complications related to COVID-19, Microsoft pushed the game out to 2021.

While delays suck, I'll ALWAYS accept it if it helps make the game better. I have really cut back on AAA games these days as I'm sick of them being so bug ridden at launch. So that has led me to waiting for massive price drops before I buy anything anymore.

343, take your time and do it right, Halo deserves it and so does it's fans.

@nickpeck36: Good on you. Patience pays.

I waited 27 years to play Doom and just recently picked it up for $10 in a collection with three other games. Between the bugs and the unnecessary microtransactions, I'm fine with saying 95% of the games to come out this generation did not warrant their $59.99 asking price. At best they are worth $39.99..... twelve months after launch.

You're going to need Cortana on a stripper pole to save this game.

@justin01: How did you know? That's coming in the first DLC pack in 2022. You can get her for $4.99 or in a double pack for $8.99 with Johnson jackin off a shotty.

I'm very happy 343i is recognizing the original target audience is in their 30s now.

Not to hate but I think I played 3 Halo games and when I look at that trailer I feel like I`ve been in that exact battle against those same enemies with the same image quality and backdrop and gun sounds three times before.

The one difference I can see (I'm probably wrong on this since I'm not very knowledgeable in things related to Halo) is that I don't think there was that revolver type gun in other Halo games.

There doesn't seem to be much diversity in that franchise, though I did kindof enjoy Halo Reach (I think most people didn't like it?) but as is always the case with Halo games i found the guns very underwhelming. I only like the needler and the ammunition for it is in short supply

I wish I could understand what people see in Halo. Maybe the multiplayer? Never tried it out. Only some couch coop back when you could drive a jeep with a friend.

Wish Sony had this much dedication trying to push Resistance. Best console fps franchise imo (if you scrap Burning Skies). So much environmental and lore potential. Insomniac should give it another try. Spiderman was good but nothing we haven't played a thousand times before.

@Keaze_:Halo was built on a community. If you weren't around for the Bungie-era glory days of Halo 3, you probably won't understand. But bungie was excellent at fostering community, and in those days, probably from 2007-2010 (though the Halo 2 days were good as well), it wasn't uncommon to find yourself invited to random party of custom games full of 16 players playing hilarious, weird, and random gametypes developed by the community itself.

On top of that, the multiplayer. Fun, goofy, and competitive. It had all in equal measure.

The campaign similarly carried that magic bungie ethos, hyping people up, getting people excited. It was grand, and humble.

It was a good time.

If you ever want a slice, jump into MCC Halo 3 8v8. You'll get a taste.

@VANGUARD003:

Oh I was around but Halo in the 2000s wasn't really a thing in my entourage. During those years I was mostly playing Unreal Tournament, which was fantastic back then. Then came Starcraft, then an obscure MMO that probably noone ever heard of, that kept my attention for years.

I guess there was just no opportunity for me to get into Halo.

If I could go back in time maybe I'd give the multiplayer a try. My fragging days are over. But it sounds like those Bungie glory days were a lot of fun indeed.

Actually, if I could go back in time I'd play the exact same things I used to play because I had so much damn fun and you can't get experiences like those anymore. Gaming has changed. Mostly communities. Can't get those back.

@Keaze_: Halo became popular for the same reason Goldeneye became popular - console players who didn't have PCs and didn't know any better were amazed by the multiplayer.

Of course, people already playing Counterstrike, Unreal Tournament, Quake, and Team Fortress were baffled at what people saw in Halo, played with clunky controllers.

Up to 500 million dollars to develop this game and what they got to show for it is craig. Witcher 3 cost around 85 million dollars to make and GTA5 was around 265 million dollars. They are 5 to 7 year-old games and look arguably better than what the Halo Infinite demo showed us.

Do I even have to make a point here on what to expect? Otherwise prepare yourself for massive disappointment.

I wonder how many of the people complaining about the delays are the same people who complained about the quality of the graphics and expected improvements? The game is taking a long time though - it was about 3 years between Halo 4 and Halo 5 and its going on 5 years waiting for Infinite. They really wanted to have the game ready for the XsX launch and knew the damage not having it launch would cause but they delayed the game anyway. So are they inept or are they taking the heat to make sure the game is as good as it can be? After Halo 5's campaign being meh, I'm hoping its the latter and am willing to wait as long as necessary in order to get a great game rather than a piss poor campaign like Guardians. The games have been slowly going down in quality with each iteration. They need to stop that trend before more people start getting Halo fatigue.

@bdrtfm: The game has already been heavily delayed, and what they showed was expected improvements that come from such delays?

Or maybe it'll never be good, because the people making it are not competent.

@bdrtfm: It was not about the waiting, it was about the reveals during the waiting that got people furiating - live service announce, cosmetic charges, rumored battle royale and so on. All they have been wanting is a Halo with great story, fun multiplayer like classic titles, not another Destiny clone to grind and milk the hell out of players. Plus live service also means that the story was never finished, nor the core gameplay were thoroughly balanced. In addition, past failure of Battlefield 5, Anthem, Fallout 76, etc. and most recent Marvel Avengers have made gamers losing faith in this kind of system more and more, even Genshin Impact are getting backlashes and dropping players as well. Plus expecting gamers to stick to it for 10 years? That's totally unreal. After all, 343i have done a very few that really impress fans, mostly negative otherwise - Halo 4 was controversial, 5 Guardians lackluster and mediocre as you said, PC ports quality are like stock market, up and down, then the Infinite backlashes. They have been given a lot of time to improve (8 years compared to Bungie 10 years), and now they still say they are learning, improving, asking fans to wait and wait more. Like how is that going to gain everyone trusts?

@ekowayuki2: Fortunately the fan's trust is worthless. Trust doesn't make money. Live service games make money. If the game Is good, not even great, no one will care about the delay until the next delay. Fan opinion doesn't matter because they all end up buying the game unless it is completeeeeee horse crap and not your definition of horse crap. Most people see Halo and buy.

@terrythegnome19: Avengers lost tons of money. Anthem lost tons of money. Live services are the new MMO crash of the 2000s. "MMOs make money - just look at World of Warcraft! We'll make our own and make millions!"

Studio after studio died for that stupidity. Live services are the next money grubbing failure in the making - and for the EXACT same reasons no one learned from the MMOs fiasco.

I'm seeing this more and more in the news media. Why do I care what random people think? I have my own opinions on things and don't need the words of others to form it.

Not trying to be rude here or disrespect the author. I'm recently noticing a glut of articles that gathers a few tweets and tries to make it a thing.

i rather have angry people than not give a damn... sums up the world pretty well

also i finally installed and played the mcc on pc and well... i still love the games but the online seems dead and messed up. for one i could understand the frag hunters in objective games when the games were new and kd ratio was shown everywhere front and center. but seeing that 1/4th of the few people playing now years later like to just get a power weapon and go somewhere near the objective to get as many kills as possible while objective score is 0 just baffles. playing about decade old games and still standing in a corner.

also the fact how few people have gotten really basic achievements.

They don't need to rush this game.

If people didn't complain about how abysmal the game looked during the demo, that demo is how the final game would've been, and you'd be playing it right now. That dev thought it was enough 🤣And now they're asking fans to be patient. 343i are the ultimate meme of the gaming industry.

@hardwenzen: yeah you are making some assumptions here. Also the demo didn't look that abysmal it look unfinished. Which it was. Learn about how graphics are made in video games and you might understand why the demo looked like that. My guess is you don't have the wit or determination to know half of what goes into visuals in game dev so I'm not sure why I'm bothering.

@hardwenzen: Meh hearsay...demos are hardly ever the final build, hence the reason why it states in them not a final representation of the game still in progress etc. Betas for instance are not a final representation of the game...how many betas have been played and end up being nothing like the end game....I hardly think they delayed the game because a bunch of babies complained about subpar graphics on a demo, played on a PC and streamed at 1080....they came out and said they needed more time due to the crap going on this year. I think that's pretty understandable unless you're living under a rock...I mean its not like this game was the only one delayed...hell how many times was Cyberpunk delayed lol. I guess we will see when the game comes out. I didn't really care for Halo 5 or 4, but what I have seen so far with this one has renewed my interest in Halo. If it's going to be on Gamepass(which it's suppose to be) I can try it there first before buying it....so works out great.

Turnover *CAN* be a healthy thing however, in 343's case with the Halo IP all signs have been pointing to a very bad thing. Ever since 343 was founded there's been reports of high turnover, outsourced freelance work and an overall attitude of "I just want Halo on my resume" among everyone involved since H4. I think with Infinite this very poorly structured studio has found itself at a crossroads of making a love letter to the fans and their past methods of production.

It still blows my mind to pieces that MS would treat their biggest IP this way. Why put together a whole new studio to outsource so much? I sincerely hope that this entire dev cycle hell kicks them in the balls and they start looking at more long term practices and stop saving a quick buck on cheap outsourced labor.
