Halo Infinite Developer Joseph Staten Is Leaving 343 Industries And Returning To Xbox Publishing - Report

Amidst reports of Microsoft layoffs heavily impacting 343 Industries, Joseph Staten is reportedly also departing the Halo Infinite studio.

In a bombshell announcement, Microsoft stated that it will lay off 10,000 people. Halo Infinite's 343 Industries has been impacted, according to reports, and veteran developer Joseph Staten is reportedly exiting to rejoin Xbox Publishing.

Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier broke the news of Staten leaving and noted that 343 Industries was "hit hard" by Microsoft's layoffs. Staten has a storied legacy in the Halo franchise. He helped pen the stories for Halo: Combat Evolved, Halo 2, Halo 3, and more. In 2020, 343 Industries announced that Staten was back to help the team "get [Halo Infinite] to the finish line."

Staten's departure from Halo Infinite isn't entirely unexpected. The original 343 Industries blog post announcing Staten's support stated he would help "for a bit," suggesting that Staten's presence on Halo was temporary.

Other 343 Industries workers have started taking to Twitter to announce their layoffs. Christopher Blohm, Design Lead at 343 Industries, announced his departure from the studio after "twelve years at 343 [Industries] and 23 years at Microsoft."

According to Bloomberg's report, both Bethesda Game Studios--developer behind Starfield--and 343 Industries were affected by Microsoft's layoffs. Exact reduction numbers aren't known, but 343 Industries studio head Pierre Hintze confirmed in an internal email that Halo Infinite's multiplayer and live service elements would continue to get support.

@sebb: That was your takeaway from this? This has nothing to do with GP.

@thecupidstunts: gamepass is part of xbox and xbox is part of microsoft. So it is perfectly fare to mention gamepass.

@sebb: So by your logic psplus is a disaster seeing as Sony have laid off 61000 staff while during the same period Ms has hired 121,000 more?

@sebb: Except you only mentioned GP in your comment, when these layoffs aren't about GP. That would be like me saying "I thought things were going so well, and that Microsoft Surface Earbuds were more profitable than ever."

@thecupidstunts: The games industry is far more profitable than selling earbuds. The game industry is bigger than any other media industry. It stands to reason that it would be a big part of microsoft's income if gamepass was doing great. And therefore would help them keep employees. But I don't think it is making any profit at all and that they lie about it.

@sebb: Yeah, I've definitely wondered myself about the current profitability of GP. I know what they tell us, but I still question the veracity of some of their claims.

@sebb:

I would guess this is more related to a company-wide savings mandate. All Microsoft divisions are affected, not just XBOX. Microsoft stock is down something like 25% in the last 12 months. Layoffs across all divisions will save money and improve net revenue, which in turn will help the stock price.

@afromakka: joe pretty much had nothing to do with infinite. he came in so late and he certainly doesnt contribute much to the battle pass trash. the full expectation was that he helps with the story dlc or sequels and ofc that didnt happen. well once again xbox shows they dont really have core lines handled.

@afromakka: No one saved Halo. It’s because of these people leaving it was in that state in the first place.

It continues to be a horrible game and GaaS addition to Gamepass, and this was supposed to be MSFT’s flagship IP.
