Halo Infinite Won't Have Dual-Wielding Or Playable Elites, Dev Reveals In 44-Minute Deep Dive

Microsoft answered lots of fan questions in a deep dive video with the developers.

Microsoft has released another deep-dive video on Halo Infinite in which several developers from the team spend 44 minutes answering questions about the game, which was originally supposed to launch with the Xbox Series X|S. One feature that won't be in the game, at least initially, is dual-wielding weapons. Introduced in Halo 2, the feature has been critical to many players' loadouts since then.

The whole video is treat, with sandbox designer Quinn DelHoyo, lead world designer John Mulkey, campaign art lead Justin Dinges, and gameplay director Troy Mashburn answering numerous questions that fans submitted on Twitter.

No Dual-Wielding

Among the things we learned is that dual-wielding is not in the game. DelHoyo said dual-wielding is "not currently in the cards," at least at the moment. "Whenever you set out to make a game with the size of Halo Infinite, there's so many things you can do. I think we have a very talented team where we can do anything but we can't do everything," DelHoyo said.

The developer said 343 instead chose to focus on Halo Infinite's weapons, gunplay, grenades, and melee, as well as equipment.

Different Cinematics

Also in the video, it's confirmed that Halo Infinite will adopt the Uncharted-style of cinematics in that there won't be any distinct cutscenes. Instead, cutscenes will blend into gameplay without giving you a black screen or a hard stop as the series did previously. There will be a seamless transition from gameplay to cinematics and vice versa, the studio said.

We also learned in the video that there are no playable Elites in Halo Infinite. "This is a Master Chief story and a Spartan story," DelHoyo said.

Open-World?

Someone also asked if you can knock things off the edge of the Zeta Halo map, and you can, while the developers also clarified how much of an open-world game Halo Infinite is.

Mashburn said people have pre-conceived ideas about what open-world and semi-open world means. For some people, this means going out into the world and gathering elements to craft, but "that's not what we're about" for Halo Infinite, Mashburn said. Halo Infinite was inspired by the open nature of Halo 1's Silent Cartographer mission and how much freedom it gave players.

"When we talk about the spiritual reboot of the franchise [with Halo Infinite], we wanted to capture the essence of this feeling of player choice," Mashburn said.

While Halo Infinite might not be a fully open-world game, Mashburn said players will have much more freedom than in the past. He referenced a Halo 5 mission where you pilot a Scorpion and then leave it behind as you move on to the next mission. In Halo Infinite, things might be different.

"What if you could keep that Scorpion? What if you could drive that Scorpion to the next mission [in Halo Infinite]? he said. "And then we started taking that future. What if instead of going through the front gate of that mission, you can drive that Scorpion up the hill around the back side and blow up that Wraith that's parked there before the enemy even knows you're around. This really struck a chord with us."

The full video is well worth a watch if you're a Halo fan looking for as much information as you can get. Alternatively, you can read a summation of the key points here on Reddit.

If you're after even more Halo Infinite intel, you can check out the previous Ask343 video that revealed a lot of new details on the sandbox elements.

Halo Infinite will release in Fall 2021 on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. The game's multiplayer element will be free-to-play with microtransactions. Recently, developer 343 Industries released a series of images from the game's campaign mode that show off a massive graphical improvement.

Outside of Halo Infinite, Microsoft continues to update and evolve Halo: The Master Chief Collection. Its new Season 6 update includes new maps from the canceled Halo Online game.

YAY, removing features from a series that have been a part of it for over a decade! SWEET.

Can we get someone with working brain cells on this game, quick?

@cheeseweasel24: Have you ever played Halo ? Dual wielding was a mistake that Bungie took out. Its hard to balance weapons , and its more fun to use a BR.

@keiser69: Speak for yourself. Dual wielding was kool as heck whenever it was pulled off. I remember dual magnuming the crap out of folks in halo 2. You could easily pull a sick double kill by droppin down on some folks and suprise rapid blast their ***es.

This was before the patch. 8 shots to kill a player. You're holding 24 rounds. Technically with perfect aim you could get a triple kill before even having to reload. It was OP in some ways perhaps. Then they patched the game and it became 13 rounds to kill a player making the guns not as great : (

But it's whatever... They could still do some damage.

I think santinigrete has a point. I do remember feeling like halo 3 dual wielding wasn't as good. That game felt like you had to try harder to land shots so the spray and prey weapons often didn't cut it. I would sometimes wreck folks with a smg/plasma rifle combo but still... Against a swift player who's using some frags and a br... It's not very useful unless you get the drop on em.

and the dual needlers did suck in halo 2 lololol. That walshy clip is too good though lololol.

But the main point though keiser... Is that we want playable elites. We want a finished game on launch. We want there to be no wallet r8pe. We want old feats brought back and done well or reimagined. Seems like what we're getting is going to suck *** lol.

@goldenageplayer: Playable elites in MP had much larger hit boxes and so were a disadvantage. In campaign I just could care less about playing as anyone other than MC. However I dont know how you figure what we are getting is going to suck cause of dual wielding and elites being missing. This is the first open world-ish halo , new equipment , a day night cycle , new vehicles (teased in the blog). I think its a bit disingenuous to say that none of that is good or will work especially since noone has played it.

@keiser69: I liked dual welding in Halo 2, in 3 it was a mistake because every gun that you could dual weld sucked, except the needler witch sucked baaad. Coming back to roots can be great if they remember that great shooters has great guns.

@keiser69: Yeah man, your opinion is absolutely FACT!

And that sentence is absolutely sarcasm!

I've played every game in the series, and I f*cking liked dual-wielding. And your opinion means absolutely nothing to me, so get over it. Some people actually have different opinions.

@cheeseweasel24: How exactly am I being an asshole when you say things like this "Can we get someone with working brain cells on this game, quick? "

Seems to me thats you. You also are complaining about taking away features that Bungie took away years ago. Also you don't give these guys any credit for adding the features they have , day night cycle , open world , new equipment , new vehicles. I dont know if the game is good or not but neither do you. Because neither one of us has played it. So why dont you wait for release and then you can come back here and whine.

@keiser69: How exactly are you being an asshole?

"Have you ever played Halo?"

There ya go.

Frankly, in my opinion, the last two games sucked, and my "can we get some people with brain cells on this game" comment is more than justified when, instead of taking features out of the game, they could've balanced it like I suggested. But that might require actually f*cking thinking, so nah, just cut it out.

And all of this- ALL OF IT- is opinion. Not fact. So smarting off and being a little bitch just because you don't agree does (again, in my opinion) make you an asshole.

There ya go. That's how opinions work, and I've probably spent just as much on Halo as you have (every game at launch, plus the Master Chief Collection, plus figures, Mega Construx and more), so my opinion is 100% as valid as yours, I just didn't slam down anyone else's opinion until they started shit, like you.

@cheeseweasel24: I usually don't call people a little bitch unless ya know they think they know better than the developers making the game. Ya know kinda like you. But Bungie removed duel wielding too so I guess you just need to stop playing Halo. That would be my suggestion. Sure would make the lobbies better.

@keiser69: Considering I laid out some perfectly viable options to balance dual-wielding and the best they could do is "get rid of it," I definitely have a leg up on SOMEONE on the team.

And your suggestion, opinions- pretty much anything you say- doesn't matter a bit to me. You're the smartass that started this and can't come up with anything worth saying. I don't even play multiplayer except locally with my family, so you can keep your lobbies, go play with your little kids and their epic insults, I'll play with people I know and actually, y'know, have fun.

I stated a friggin' fact: opinions are not facts. I said it sarcastically because the guy started that garbage. I didn't try to "come off" as anything; I called out an asshole for being an asshole, and then you smarted off like an asshole, too. Now you're trying to act like you didn't come at me with your mouth on "extra fabulous."

@cheeseweasel24:Bungie themselves removed dual wielding long ago. It was overpowered in H2 and under powered in Halo 3 and too hard to balance around weapons that also still had to function as a standalone gun in a balanced way which is why the magnum is so bad in H3 because it was balanced around dual wielding but pretty useless as a standalone gun.

As for the Elites, its pretty much in the same boat, apart from aesthetic purposes, almost no one played as an Elite because their heads were larger and easier to headshot and they also had a larger overall hitbox due to their large size. Their heads were also more difficult to hit from behind because of their hunched over stance, which again just becomes another balance issue.

Bungie realised these issues long before 343 got their hands on it which is why they removed dual wield after H3 and mostly relegated playable elites to their own Spartans vs Elites game mode (Invasion) in Reach for ranked play.

"Their heads were larger and easier to headshot... also more difficult to hit from behind because of their hunched over stance..."

Sounds like it was pretty balanced to me.

Far as dual-wielding goes, it SHOULD be overpowered, but harder to hit with. Make it tougher/slower to chuck grenades or activate powers while dual-wielding. Tons of possibilities to fix it without removing it. If something is unbalanced, f*cking BALANCE it, don't remove it.

I get that dual wield isn't simple to implement with the weapons sandbox they must have but then again I don't have any faith after their last attempt with its swollen/duplicated weapons list. There better be a lot of fat trimming this time around.

@Lach0121: I don't really care one way or another about dual wielding, my point is there was far too much overlap in weapons in Halo 4,5. Most of the Promethean weapons felt like UNSC knock offs with fancy animations. I understand the idea of trying to get weapons to fill rolls but I like my alien weapons to be more creative and lend to the sandbox. I honestly hated most of what 343 did with the Prometheans but a creative weapons loadout could have helped with that. The covenant weapons and armour were fun and colourful, the Prometheans were pretty much a one hit wonder.

Hey we've got this new enemy what should we do about the character, armor, and weapons?

Make them glow orange.

The Weapons?

No, everything.

Done!

Also teleportation isn't a replacement for good AI.

Sorry, the rant starts easily when thinking about the Prometheans.

@Lach0121: I was really looking forward to 4 and again 5 but both failed to meet expectations. I'm skeptically hopeful for 6. I had much more enthusiasm and hope before last years showing of Infinite and I still half cringe when they mention a lot of the features.

At this point I just wish they would tell me the size and scope of the new Forge editor. If it's a full fledged editor I'll probably just accept whatever mess the campaign turns out to be.

@wahsobe: It's something Halo's never done before; if it's fun and fits the game's design, who cares if another game did it first? Plus, the meat hook can only grapple to enemies, so it's pretty much exclusively an in-combat traversal tool (but man is it fun).

@mogan: "It's something Halo's never done before" Whenever something like this gets said it really should be re-evaluated to determine if it adds benefit to the game, fun or not. The reason we have skulls in Halo is to create fun and or difficulty but they are not part of the Vanilla experience intentionally.

The Grappleshot should be at best a minor single mission feature. Traversal has been a purposefully crafted part of the gameplay in the original Halo trilogy that often intentionally restricts player movement for the intent of creating it's unique gameplay. Traversal in the last couple games has been simplified to allow the player to get anywhere from anywhere in an instant without the need or desire for a vehicle, drastically altering the titles core gameplay mechanics.

I'm not against the concept of the Grappleshot for sh*ts and giggles but I'm fervently against it as part of the core mechanics.

@goldenageplayer: Right? Though I didn't mind how the Jet pack was used mostly because it served as a fun little change of pace in the middle of the game and was over relatively quickly. Had the Grappleshot been implemented the same way it wouldn't have been a problem.

The Jet Pack was a blast in Halo custom maps and the Grappleshot could have been a huge feature here without the need of being a campaign standard.

@wahsobe: Honestly, the very LAST thing I want to see from Halo is another linear experience where my traversal through levels is entirely planned out and largely on rails. The idea of being able to move around more open maps in a more freeform way sounds like a good change to me. So bring on the grappleshot.

@mogan: Movement restriction and linearity are not mutually exclusive. You can easily create movement restrictions in an open world game, and a linear game can be given only a outer boundary to keep players within it's linear story.

We live in an open world and yet we are both hampered by movement restricts and yet are not left with a linear storyline for a life.

It's important for games to celebrate their differences otherwise every experience we get will end up feeling like the same game with a different skin. I liked Halo because it was Halo not because it was Space COD, Super Soldier Battle Grounds, Fort Halo, or Spartan Doom.

Don't try to fit in, instead try to be the best version of yourself.

Was a crap implementation to begin with.... Spartans should have had heavier strong weapons than regular soldiers to begin with, instead of going the John Wayne way.

Let’s just hope no Warden Eternals and other such crap.

No Dual wielding, That fine halo is still good without

No playable elite. Shame, but not fine with reasoning. Since it will take time to make work.

Only one biome and no rain fall or hostile wild life......... That a red flag !

It showing that 343, is going though development hell! You see it from developer eye in the video they look exhausted. Imagine this game releasing last year in nov. It would be cyberpunk2077 before cyberpunk2077....

@septimius_magna: I actually barely played any Halo multiplayer after 3 (and some ODST Firefight). What I liked about Halo 4’s campaign was that it was a new beginning (kinda), with characters who felt like they had a little more depth than previous Halos, and I liked the larger enemy and weapon diversity. I also liked that your character felt and sounded a little heavier than before, like a giant space marine in power armor. Plus, I thought the art style had a little more detail and interest in the environments than Bungie’s Halos.
