Halo Infinite Won't Have Dual-Wielding Or Playable Elites, Dev Reveals In 44-Minute Deep Dive

Microsoft answered lots of fan questions in a deep dive video with the developers.

Microsoft has released another deep-dive video on Halo Infinite in which several developers from the team spend 44 minutes answering questions about the game, which was originally supposed to launch with the Xbox Series X|S. One feature that won't be in the game, at least initially, is dual-wielding weapons. Introduced in Halo 2, the feature has been critical to many players' loadouts since then.

The whole video is treat, with sandbox designer Quinn DelHoyo, lead world designer John Mulkey, campaign art lead Justin Dinges, and gameplay director Troy Mashburn answering numerous questions that fans submitted on Twitter.

No Dual-Wielding

Among the things we learned is that dual-wielding is not in the game. DelHoyo said dual-wielding is "not currently in the cards," at least at the moment. "Whenever you set out to make a game with the size of Halo Infinite, there's so many things you can do. I think we have a very talented team where we can do anything but we can't do everything," DelHoyo said.

The developer said 343 instead chose to focus on Halo Infinite's weapons, gunplay, grenades, and melee, as well as equipment.

Different Cinematics

Also in the video, it's confirmed that Halo Infinite will adopt the Uncharted-style of cinematics in that there won't be any distinct cutscenes. Instead, cutscenes will blend into gameplay without giving you a black screen or a hard stop as the series did previously. There will be a seamless transition from gameplay to cinematics and vice versa, the studio said.

We also learned in the video that there are no playable Elites in Halo Infinite. "This is a Master Chief story and a Spartan story," DelHoyo said.

Open-World?

Someone also asked if you can knock things off the edge of the Zeta Halo map, and you can, while the developers also clarified how much of an open-world game Halo Infinite is.

Mashburn said people have pre-conceived ideas about what open-world and semi-open world means. For some people, this means going out into the world and gathering elements to craft, but "that's not what we're about" for Halo Infinite, Mashburn said. Halo Infinite was inspired by the open nature of Halo 1's Silent Cartographer mission and how much freedom it gave players.

"When we talk about the spiritual reboot of the franchise [with Halo Infinite], we wanted to capture the essence of this feeling of player choice," Mashburn said.

While Halo Infinite might not be a fully open-world game, Mashburn said players will have much more freedom than in the past. He referenced a Halo 5 mission where you pilot a Scorpion and then leave it behind as you move on to the next mission. In Halo Infinite, things might be different.

"What if you could keep that Scorpion? What if you could drive that Scorpion to the next mission [in Halo Infinite]? he said. "And then we started taking that future. What if instead of going through the front gate of that mission, you can drive that Scorpion up the hill around the back side and blow up that Wraith that's parked there before the enemy even knows you're around. This really struck a chord with us."

The full video is well worth a watch if you're a Halo fan looking for as much information as you can get. Alternatively, you can read a summation of the key points here on Reddit.

If you're after even more Halo Infinite intel, you can check out the previous Ask343 video that revealed a lot of new details on the sandbox elements.

Halo Infinite will release in Fall 2021 on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. The game's multiplayer element will be free-to-play with microtransactions. Recently, developer 343 Industries released a series of images from the game's campaign mode that show off a massive graphical improvement.

Outside of Halo Infinite, Microsoft continues to update and evolve Halo: The Master Chief Collection. Its new Season 6 update includes new maps from the canceled Halo Online game.

Sounds like things are working out great.

Is what I would say if I was a 343 fanboy who buys all things halo regardless of how over priced and garbage the franchise has become lololol.

@keiser69: We know there wont be playable elites. That also means good bye to sick modes like invasion from halo reach.

We know they have been struggling with making this game.

We know it wont launch actually finished and they will add crap later.

We know there is no dual wielding.

We know the game is being made by a company that's constantly letting its base down while pushing micro transaction bull crap.

We know they gave us a super garbage trailer that was clearly not ready.

We know the story looks dumb on planet lego or whatever... Prolly will be a terrible story based on what we've received from 343... Pretty much everyone agrees halo 5 and halo wars 2 are super dumb story wise. Their lil films like halo nightfall and forward unto dawn are crap too.

Fair point though. We shall wait and see what it's like when it comes out lololol.

Although at this point... With 343s decade long track record of mostly failures haha... What you're implying I should do is wait for a plant that gets no water to give us tons of fruit in the next few months. Yeah dude... Let's just wait and see how that goes lololol.

Tell ya what though my guy. Game comes out. Doesn't wallet r8pe us at all. Brings halo back from the back burner. Instantly outdoes cod like back in the good old bungie halo days. Gets me hooked because of its sick game play. And basically FINALLY delivers the first good halo game in over a decade basically. Then I will owe you a coke and be nice to 343 for a change. Deal?

@keiser69: I played about 40 minutes of it. Now, not only has he stolen DoomGuy’s armour, but now his grappling hook as well! It hasn’t even been one year since Eternal either. The plagiarism just won’t let up. But what really disappoints me are the bland character models, ugly textures and complete lack of particle effects. It just looked lazy to me.

So you work at 343 or Microsoft and are currently risking your job by breaking your NDA ? I am calling shenanigans on you playing Halo Infinite at all. Ok Grappling hooks ...go look up Bionic Commando. Doom didnt invent grappling hooks. Also I would direct you to the new screenshots from Halo which look pretty amazing. But whatever you dont like this game , thats a real shame since you work there. Riiiiight.

@keiser69:

No. What’s an NDA?

I know what Bionic Commando is. That doesn’t change the fact that Master Chief is nothing more than a feebly slow version of DoomGuy, just weeks after DoomGuy wishes to distance himself from that copycat. One would be forgiven for thinking Master Chief’s been stalking DoomGuy this whole time. He clearly wishes to be everything that he is.

I love that you think I work for 343 but they can’t afford me. We have a difference in opinion on my overall value... let’s just leave it as that.

this "what if you could" reminds me precisely from burnout series. i remember playing burnout 3 and games of that era, often thinking how cool it would be if the magic barrier arrows werent there and i could go anywhere.

then i got burnout paradise thinking oh cool finally. i played it for 10 minutes and was completely fed up. youre either driving and fooling around at leisurely pace doing nothing or driving the same few A to B or C to B type races over and over while barely ever seeing any of the other drivers who chose some different path

ofc this is a different case... but personally when playing halo i never thinked "oh i wish i could take that scorpion into the next mission". because 1 mission i maybe was in silent cartographer but after that had a 20-120min flight into completely different region.

i mean fully open world halo ring could be cool... but that would be about tens of thousands of square miles. this open world could in way replace the good bits of Firefight mode but if the enemy locations and types stay same from playthrough to playthrough then it doesnt really do that either

Xbox should have more than this for 2021 considering all the hype and how Sony already have new R&C and Horizon sequels, Stray, Kena and Gran Turismo 7 planned for the rest of the year. Then what will go up against GOW in 2022? Hellblade?

Xbox is looking weaker with every passing year.

@bloodbornelore: Ok so you have a 3D platformer , Horizion sequel and a cat platformer , Kena looks to be a pikmin ripoff. GT7 is not this year.

So as far as going up against Sony? While it may not be as big as it once was go look at the front page of Gamespot and you will see Halo is bigger than all these games. It just is. No fanboy it just is. Once Pringles give Kena or Horizon girl her own flavor of pringle maybe.

Not only that you have rumors of FH5 and possibly Starfield this year or at least one unannounced game. I believe FH5 and Starfield next year. So for next year Starfield , Fable , Sate of Decay 3 , FH5 , Wolfenstien 3 who knows what all might come.

For this year Halo is enough to compete with every game you just listed except GT7 cause thats next year.

@bloodbornelore: OK don't forget Scorn MSFS and The Ascent. We can list games all day. Pick the Sony 1st party out this year bigger than Halo. Both sides have a bunch of games coming out. You think Xbox should have more , they have a list of 30 or so. Playstation has a big list. Your post was that they should have more than Halo , they do. And none of the games you listed are bigger than Halo

@keiser69:

Oh, yes! Scorn. That game looks amazing. I apologise for forgetting about that because the last time I saw new footage of it was over five years ago. I love the H.R Giger influences and since it was announced exclusive for Xbox, it’s been my post anticipated Xbox game. It’s a real shame that it missed launch. It actually originally had a 2019 release date.

“Your post was that they should have more than Halo , they do. And none of the games you listed are bigger than Halo.”

You make a fair point there but Halo will still disappoint because it’s 343 and so Sony will likely have a number of games that will be more pleasing or higher rated by journalists who will likely tear it to pieces. But you are correct and I must concede. Halo is still probably the biggest exclusive game of the year, regardless of how it was totally trashed last year. Not only that, I was wrong about it being MS’s only game this year. I mean, how could I forget Scorn, for crying out loud. (I’ve not heard of The Ascent)

@bloodbornelore: Horizon 5,Starfield and Halo for the second half of the year.

Flight Sim is landing close to your house too ;-)

These are really heavy hitters and anyone who tries to belittle them to play the consolewars-game is fooling him/herself.

@sladakrobot: Flight Sim was released last year and the next Forza is just called Forza Motorsport. Also, Starfield isn’t releasing this year. Nor is Sony’s GOW though. But considering all the big system sellers Sony have planned for 2021, just the notoriously disappointing Halo doesn’t look like much competition, does it? You should be rooting for Xbox to release more AAA’s more regularly because nearly everyone is tired of them having nothing to advertise their new console with.

@bloodbornelore: So Kena , Stray, and Ratchet and Clank are Triple A ? I dont think you understand that even with a very bad Halo 5 , Halo is still bigger than anything Sony has this year. There are a massive amount of old school Halo fans that have been waiting for this particular game.

@legacyrxt: But Deathloop and Little Devil Inside are. See? That’s a lot of GOTY contenders whereas Xbox haven’t released anything major since Crackdown 3. That’s why I’m surprised they’re relying on just another disappointing Halo from 343. It’s almost like Phil’s stopped taking my advice now that he sees a growing interest in the brand again. He just said thank you for the Vault idea and we just left it as that. Next year, he’s on his own. I’m not helping him anymore.

@bloodbornelore: I have no evidence about Starfiled but Phil mentions the game almost everytime he speaks up...many (incl myself) lean to believe the rumor about the 2021 launch. It is discussed in every podcast, stream or blogs. There is a pattern in such things i noticed in the last 3-4 years.

Flight Sim was PC only so far,the tech to run this game on PC was demanding, still it was received very well... a console version is a huge thing.

Forza Horizon 5 is set for 2021 according to rumors but its (like Fable was) a bad kept secret.

Forza Motorsport i dont know its future. Is it 2022 or 2023?dunno.

About Halo, dont know why you say its notoriously dissappointing when all of Halos up to Halo 5 (incl. spinoffs ODST and Reach) was on a high level.

I understand ppl when they say Halo 5 wasnt that good (storywise) but cant understand when they say all Halo games are bad.

There are/is huge bases found of every single Halo up to date, only Halo 5 fell of the clip.

@sladakrobot: I thought it was Halo 4 and Reach that were the most disliked in the franchise and that MCC is where’s it’s at. New entries of Halo have always disappointed a lot of fans since Bungie left it.

A Forza Horizon 5 this year wouldn’t surprise me but the news seems to be circling “Forza Motorsport” instead.

As for Starfield, I’m still saying 2022 because Xbox need something to compete with GOW as a potential GOTY contender. I also believe this because Hellblade 2 isn’t going to look very good as a GOW-Lite in very same year.

Good. Never liked dual weiding in Halo 2. But not having the AR in Halo 2 was an even bigger mistake. I mean not to have one of the most iconic looking weapons in the sequel was a terrible decision. Master Chief and the AR go hand in hand. Whoever made that decision should’ve been sacked imo.

@gamerbum: it was a brave change that made people try different weaponry. at this point AR is like the pikachu of halo. im tired of seeing pikachu plastered everywhere when he should be just one of the first 150.

besides AR has changed so much its pretty much just a skin anyway. smg of halo2 is more ar than the ar in halo3 onwards

As long as there is only one stick to aim withm dual wielding doesn’t make much sense anyway. VR is the way to do it properly.

Good decision. Couldn't stand it in H2. Instead of adding stupid dual wield mechanics, add more weapons, but they better not be the garbage they've added in H5.

@hardwenzen: Agreed. I just don't care for dual wielding in most games. Especially in Halo.

I am looking forward to the new Halo. I wanted a reboot ever since 4 came out. I prefer Bungie's, but I am really curious to see what 343 can do with it.

I did not care for the whole "guardians" crap though. I hope that shit has been done away with.
