Halo Reach And The Rest Of The Master Chief Collection Will Come To PC "When It's Ready"

Finish the fight...eventually.

Halo: The Master Chief Collection is coming to PC at a rate of one game at a time--while the Xbox One version launched with four games, on PC titles are being released and sold individually. Some people are wondering when the games are coming, and now Microsoft has reaffirmed that it is taking a "when it's ready" approach to the launch schedule.

Responding to someone on Twitter, Halo community director Brian Jarrard pointed out that Microsoft never committed to a firm release schedule for each game in the package. "We've never said anything about all the games arriving on PC this year," he said.

The current plan is for the first title, Halo: Reach, to release by the end of 2019, though even this is not locked in. "We've been consistently saying they're ready when they're ready. We certainly hope Reach arrives by end of year but much depends on flighting outcomes--when it's ready, it'll launch," Jarrard said.

After Halo: Reach, the Halo games in The Master Chief Collection will release in chronological order: Halo Combat Evolved Anniversary, Halo 2 Anniversary, Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST, and finally Halo 4. It's understandable that some would feel frustrated that it's taking so long for the Halo games to come to PC. On the other hand, Microsoft does not want to repeat the mistakes of Halo: MCC's terrible launch on Xbox One, so taking the time to make sure the releases come out well seems like the right course of action.

The release of Halo: Reach appears to be coming up soon, as Microsoft recently published the system requirements for the game. Microsoft held the first beta test for Halo: Reach on PC earlier this year while another round of testing is going on right now.

Similar beta tests, or "flights" in the Halo parlance, will be held for each of the other upcoming games before their official release. You can sign up for the free Halo Insider program for a chance to get into the beta tests.

Halo: Reach is also coming to Xbox One in The Master Chief Collection, though a specific release date has not been announced.

As for the next all-new Halo game, Halo Infinite is set for release in Holiday 2020 as a launch title for Project Scarlett. Microsoft will also hold beta testing periods for Halo Infinite, though no firm details have been announced regarding this.

And I welcome all the time in the world when the Halo games are indeed ready and not another broken mess on the Xbox One version. I'll be ready to buy'em on PC when they feel it's ready.

Literally all I wanna know is when Reach is coming to the X1.
My wife is going crazy waiting for them to release it already, and we are both sick of trying to play with the dumb af control schemes you're stuck using on the X360 version.

I was going to post about how I wish they'd just release it, but then I experienced RDR2 on PC and realised that this was actually a good thing.

Don't get me wrong, I hate delays/waiting forever, but I'm really, really starting to hate developers who put out terrible PC ports.

@mrdinghat: Especially when people have been waiting for these games for a decade + anyway. A few months more is nothing. If they release a broken game then it's broken potentially forever and forgotten in a week.

Though there have been a lot of broken games even after multiple delays with "We want to make sure it's the best it can be" statements so never can be sure. But MS generally has been pretty good with this. They once made all their money with PC games (in terms of games) so they know something.

I wish every other developer would take this approach with their games. All these day one patches are getting to be a bit much.

Absolutely. PC game releases these days are an absolute fuckfest. The only viable way to approach new games is to wait 18 to 24 months for all issues to be ironed out and all content to be released before you buy.

It is ironic, and also incredibly sad for the developers, that this is when the game is most affordable.

Yeah, sure. Wonder what the real reason is? Probably something to do with money.

@Barighm: Probably something to do with them not wanting to repeat the disaster that was The MCC's console launch. And first YEAR after.

Plus, I doubt this PC port is a huge priority for them, what with Halo Infinite being in the works, so they probably aren't putting tons of folks on it.

343 are working together with Splash Damage and one other company I can't remember, on the PC port. Yes, the overwhelming majority of the studio is on Halo Infinite... which ALSO has at least two external studios working on it.

Between all of this, and the Showtime TV show that is rumoured to have a budget similar to Game of Thrones, Microsoft are clearly banking on 2020 being a big (and expensive) year for Halo.

@shakesmcqueen: I hope Microsoft’s Halo bets pay off for them. I’ve never been Halo’s biggest fan, but I’m real interested to see what a new take on the series looks like, and I think it’s a good fit for a big budget TV show.

@mogan: I'd bet good money that a lot of back-end work is being done to make sure it runs well on Scarlett too. There's no way they aren't going to push the collection on that machine alongside Halo Infinite.
