Halo TV Boss Discusses Master Chief Having Sex For The First Time

There was "a lot of conversation" about whether or not to have Chief go to bed with Makee, Kiki Wolfkill says.

In the first season of Paramount +'s Halo TV series, Master Chief (Pablo Schreiber) has sex, a moment that generated a lot of discussion and debate online. Halo's Kiki Wolfkill has now shed some further light on the intimate moment, saying the creative team on the show went back and forth on the idea.

"There was a lot of conversation leading up to whether to do that or not and it was a tough one. I mean, I will say that there's a lot of different opinions and voices," she told Deadline.

From Wolfkill's own perspective, she believes Chief and Makee (Charlie Murphy) hooking up was an important moment to demonstrate that Chief was capable of having a "human connection with someone."

"There's a lot of different opinions on how to do that, and ultimately, we ended up with that path and I think a lot of us feel conflicted about it and that's not a bad thing," Wolfkill said.

Wolfkill went on to say that Chief and Makee going to bed together helped make Chief's storyline and character arc more genuine and believable. Whereas Chief begins Season 1 as a soldier through and through, he becomes a "fully defined character" along the way, in part by sleeping with Makee.

"It's super interesting to be able to see his journey, and you know, admittedly some controversy along the way in getting there," Wolfkill said.

Going into Season 2, Wolfkill said she hopes the audience can "rise beyond" that sexy moment and appreciate Chief for all that he is. And once again, Wolfkill reminded everyone that the Halo TV series sits within the Silver Timeline, which is separate from the games. As such, the TV series will sometimes show Chief in a different light than the games and books. After all, Chief also removes his helmet in the TV show, which is something he never does in the games.

The Halo TV show's Season 1 finale debuted today, May 19. The series is coming back for a second season, but no release date or other details have been announced yet.

@dabear: I'm honestly not all that interested in sex scenes in my shows. I've got internet for that and lets be honest, there is always "leaked" pics/vids these days. How about we progress the story instead. Or in the case of this Halo series how about we get back to the chief actually being the chief and kicking some ass.

@dabear: I just took it as a comment and made a comment on my feelings about sex scenes in shows. I'm not sure were you think I've got my arms up here.

Pfffft. Master Chief didn't need a human connection. He's the ultimate badass because he forgoes such trivialities. He's a weapon. The only thing he needs is more ammo!

Ok, maybe Cortana too. The fact that they were both lonely souls wandering the galaxy only deepened their significence to each other.

But who has time for a casual hook up when you're on a mission to prevent the extinction of all sentient life across the galaxy!

It's sort of surprising to see higher ups in 343 express such opinions. Most of them weren't there when Chief was created, would this be the Chief they'd have in the games if they could?

I think they made a big mistake using Master Chief as the main character. They should have created their own Spartan from the ground up for the show and used the Master Chief like Superman in Supergirl. He shows up in key moments as this massive legend.

This guy is not Master Chief, he's nothing like him. They've just made some character and tacked the name on.

@thelostscribe: Agree, a show that goes in some other direction and is not centered around Chief would be the ideal thing, but they probably figured making it Chief-centric was a necessity, that it couldn't be a commercial success otherwise. They already did a Halo show with Chief in a smaller supporting role and it's not very well regarded.

I just completely disagree with this whole "we need to humanize the chief" mentality. My impression was that while he was both man and machine, he has become far more machine.

Master Chief's entire life and purpose to is to fight and defend humanity. He gave up quite a bit of his humanity to become this powerful (whether or not that was up to him, that's up for debate) and puts his life on the line every day. Because that's what he knows. I don't think we need to make him relatable - he's an ideal, a legend.

Master Chief should be the furthest thing from being able to be intimate with someone. And if they WERE going to go this route, it really could have used a lot more build up to something real.

I just hope that by the end of season one, Chief discovers his love toward men. That would be the best way to end the first season and a perfect show for 2022 standards.
