Halo Veteran Joseph Staten Departs From Microsoft

Halo Infinite creative director Joseph Staten has confirmed he's left the company via Twitter.

26 Comments

Joseph Staten, the Halo veteran brought on board by Microsoft to creatively direct Halo Infinite, has left after nine years at the company.

IGN first broke the news, with Staten confirming his departure on Twitter. Staten thanked his colleagues at Xbox and did not reveal where he's heading next.

“We’re grateful for Joseph’s contributions to the Halo franchise and Xbox as a whole," Xbox said of Staten's exit to IGN. "We wish him all the best in his new adventure."

Staten worked on the first three Halo games at Bungie, and left Bungie for Microsoft in 2014. He served as senior creative director for Xbox publishing, and in 2020, joined 343 Industries to help develop Halo Infinite. The hiring announcement said that Staten would be "focused on supporting the campaign team's existing, talented, creative leaders and ensuring they have everything they need to create an awesome Halo game."

Microsoft laid off over 10,000 employees in January, and 343 Industries was heavily impacted. Staten left 343 Industries at the time and rejoined Xbox publishing.

As for the future of 343 Industries, studio lead Pierre Hintze said the team will continue to develop Halo. Phil Spencer also said 343 Industries is "critically important to" Microsoft.

Campaign was cool. Multiplayer was okay. It also had tons of technical issues on the PC at launch. It also took forever to launch and receive updates. It’s not going to hurt much to let someone else have a stab at the next halo.

@oddshroom:

We know we know, it’s still cool to hate on Xbox and therefore Halo.

Yet when Halo Infinite launched it got overwhelmingly positive reviews receiving 8s, 9s, and some 10s. And the MP PVP was even more positively received when it launched. Some 20 million players jumping in.

It was only after a month or two when players and fanboys of a competing platform realized that the live service MP content was lacking did they up the hate campaign.

There’s no denying though that 343i nailed the most important part of any game. GAMEPLAY! Halo Infinite’s gameplay is fantastic.

I’d pick great gameplay with a poor story over a good story and poor boring gameplay (ala TLOU) every day of the week!!!

@gamerbum: Those 8,9,10's don't mean shit. No reviewer had the balls to give Halo a low score. The actual public blasted Infinite into the ground and it's still regarded as one of the worst Halo games by the fans right next to Halo Wars 2.

@ezio899:

Your delusional. The game was received very well campaign and MP. It was only a month or two in when people started to complain about the content drought.

@gamerbum: @ezio899: You guys realize you can just go to Steam and filter the reviews and find out how it was actually received, right?

Halo Infinite Multiplayer had 76k reviews in its first month, 75% of them positive. Currently, 70% of its 157k reviews are positive.

Halo Infinite Campaign only had 2,200 reviews in its first month, but 80% of them positive. Currently, 79% of it's 3,900 revies are positive.

Halo Infinite wasn't received with overwhelming positivity or blasted into the ground. It's just pretty mid.

@gamerbum: That's coming from Steam. You can go check the numbers yourself.
