Handmaid's Tale Renewed For Fifth Season Ahead of Season 4 Premiere
The dystopian drama stars Elisabeth Moss and Season 4 arrives next year.
Hulu's The Handmaid's Tale is one the most acclaimed shows of recent years, and Season 4 is set to premiere next year. Ahead of that, it's been announced that the show has also been renewed for its fifth season.
The Season 5 renewal was revealed at Disney Investor Day on December 10. It's unknown when it will hit Hulu, given Season 4 hasn't finished production yet and hasn't received a confirmed date beyond sometime in 2021, but it obviously won't be before 2022. Filming on Season 4 recently resumed after it was suspended earlier in the year.
In a statement, showrunner Bruce Miller said, "We're very grateful to Hulu and MGM that the show will be returning for a fifth season, and especially to our loyal fans for their support. We are thrilled to be able to continue to tell these stories, with our incredible cast and crew, and can't wait to be back on the air with season four next year."
The Handmaid's Tale is based on Margaret Atwood's dystopian 1985 novel of the same name, and it stars Elisabeth Moss, Joseph Fiennes, Yvonne Strahovski, Samira Wiley, Alexis Bledel, and Ann Dowd. It premiered in 2017, and all three seasons so far have won multiple Golden Globe and Emmy Awards.
While Hulu is where Disney places much of its more adult content in the US, the service isn't available elsewhere in the world, and shows such as The Handmaid's Tale are sold to other networks. However, it was recently revealed the studio is set to launch Star, which will be a free tier available within Disney+ in some international markets and will feature shows and films from Disney owned divisions such as ABC, FX, Freeform, Searchlight, and 20th Century Studios. Star will be available in Canada, New Zealand, and various European countries and launches in February.
