Harley Quinn Animated Series For Adults In The Works On DC Streaming Service

DC Entertainment has ordered a third series for its upcoming streaming service. A Harley Quinn animated series geared toward adult audiences is in the works from Warner Bros. Animation.

According to Deadline, Warner Bros. has ordered a 26-episode first season of the series, which will join the already announced revival of the animated series Young Justice series and a live-action Titans show. Harley Quinn, which is the tentative title of the series, will follow the one-time girlfriend of The Joker after she's finally left the clown prince of crime and is attempting to establish herself as Gotham City's criminal queenpin.

Thus far, the role of Harley has not been cast. However, Deadline reports that Margot Robbie, who played the character in Suicide Squad, is likely to be approached to reprise her role. Additionally, Poison Ivy is expected to play a major role in the cartoon, alongside a host of other characters from the DC Comics universe.

The project is being executive produced by Justin Halpern, Patrick Schumacker, and Dean Lorey. The trio previous collaborated on the short-lived DC live-action comedy Powerless, which ran for 12 episodes. Halpern and Schumacker served as showrunners on that series.

Harley Quinn was first introduced to the world on Batman: The Animated Series. After making the jump to the big screen in Suicide Squad, there have been a few films starring the character that are believed to be in various states of development, including an adaptation of the Gotham City Sirens comic book and a film that centers on Harley and Joker.

While no date--or even a name--has been confirmed for the upcoming DC streaming service, it's expected to debut sometime in 2018. However, it remains to be seen whether the Harley Quinn animated series would premiere at launch.
