Harmonix Drops Struggling Mad Catz for Rock Band 4 Hardware - Report

Changes.

Harmonix is making changes as it relates to Rock Band 4 hardware. The Boston-based independent developer today announced a deal with Performance Designed Products (PDP) for Rock Band 4 hardware, seemingly replacing Mad Catz as the developer and distributor of Rock Band 4 guitars and drums.

"As we look to fully achieve our goal of creating this console generation's category-defining music gaming platform, we need to partner with a truly world-class manufacturer that can operate at the scale that Rock Band requires," Harmonix CEO Steve Janiak said in a statement.

"PDP has a well-deserved reputation for innovation, customer satisfaction, and quality. They have the logistical and technical expertise to support Harmonix’s ambitious plans for the future of Rock Band, with new hardware alongside a major Rock Band 4 feature update coming this fall."

You may recall that when Rock Band 4 was announced last year, Mad Catz's involvement was substantially touted. The fact that Mad Catz is facing tough financial times might explain why Harmonix partnered with PDP. As Game Informer explains, Mad Catz's future performance was tied to the success of Rock Band 4, and when the music game came up short, the company announced a major management shakeup and a lot of layoffs. It is possible that Harmonix bought out Mad Catz's contract, but this is unknown at this point.

We asked Harmonix if today's announcement meant that PDP was effectively replacing Mad Catz, but were instead directed to this FAQ, which states that Mad Catz will continue to sell its Rock Band 4 peripherals, though there is no word on if the company will continue to order shipments.

A Mad Catz representative was not immediately available to comment on the nature of its relationship with Harmonix for Rock Band 4 going forward. We will have more details as they become available.

Although new Mad Catz CEO Karen McGinnis said Rock Band 4 performed well for the latest quarter, sell-through was "lower than originally forecast." This resulted in "higher inventory balances as well as lower margins due to increased promotional activity with retailers," she explained. She went on to say that a "competing product" impacted Rock Band 4's sales, most likely a reference to Guitar Hero Live.

She also stressed that Rock Band 4 is a "multiple-year product" that Mad Catz will continue to invest in and support. Additionally, she noted how Harmonix is treating Rock Band 4 as something of a platform, with new DLC released almost every week and regular content updates keeping the game fresh.

Bear in mind that these comments came in February, however.

The Rock Band 4 FAQ regarding today's news explains that Mad Catz peripherals for Rock Band 4 will continue to work, though there may be a compatibility issue with Xbox One controllers with the PC version. Harmonix is working with Microsoft to ensure that Xbox One instruments work on PC.

Harmonix is currently raising money on Fig for a PC version of Rock Band 4. If the target $1.5 million is raised, Sumo Digital will develop the game and it should be out this fall.

Finally, the FAQ explains that Harmonix and PDP will make announcements at PAX East (April) and E3 (June) regarding a new guitar and drumset made by PDP. You can read the full FAQ to learn more.

I bought this game once with the Mad Catz guitar. Took 11 days to get sent back for a full refund due to the guitar completely dying out of nowhere. Now that PDP may be producing the peripherals... maybe I'll give this game a second chance.

The day MadCatz dies is a day that I'll have a good laugh. They've been making garbage quality products for far too long and they need to just disappear.

@Fenixx: Hear hear! Every single controller or peripheral I got as a kid that was mad catz, barely made it through the week. Cool designs, sometimes, but that's about it. I'll be having a good laugh too!

Way too late for new guitars and drums. RB4 already missed the boat by trillions of light years as fart as I'm concerned.

Mad Catz has always made trash, ever since the PS1 days. Their horrid memory cards would just delete your saves at a whim. I have no idea how they became so popular and why people bought their overpriced fightstick controllers. Why any company would partner up with them is beyond all logic.

@DragonessAthena: I always considered them a crappy brand but didn't a lot of people say their fightsticks (or maybe just one model of them) were the exception? I remember seeing comments like that in previous articles.

I still have the two guitars I bought for Guitar Hero, still play RB3 occasionally. With the old instruments still usable for RB4 (when I get my new console), why would I spend that kind of money for a new instrument? Besides, I'm older and don't play past Medium difficulty any way so I guess they last longer!

@MetaMods: Well considering the article even states sales are not as high as they thought they'd be says it's not as popular. Comparing it WoW, Destiny etc is ludacrous as those are some of the biggest games. My best friend also owns a big gaming store and was just throwing away tons of the new RB stuff bc it hasn't sold. Our Walmart just cleared out their RB section for more Amiibos. Just bc a game has a player base doesn't mean it's not dead.

@inebriantia: things doesn't get sold mean nothing. I am talking about games that ppl has been purchased and they still play in those days. If you just based on RB4 sales (which you didn't specify which RB series you talking about). It's still not dead casue there is ppl out there want those games. There are games ppl want to play, saying its dead means no one purcahse it.

I am surprised that Mad Catz is still in business, since their products have always been poor quality. Some people do not learn, I guess.

Basicallly people bought Rockband 3 with a rockband 4 sticker and crappy rockband 3 peripherals. Over time, this game will become rockband 4 and have a new generation of peripherals....thanks for alpha and beta testing at full price guys. Gonna be awesome to buy this in a bargain bin in a year or so and have a complete product.

@Kezzy123: We didn't buy RB3 with an RB4 sticker. RB3 had online play, practice mode, more character options, etc.

I've been using a Peavey AG Riffmaster for like... 6 years now. Still works very well. Pricey, but definitely worth it. I only had to swap the batteries out on it a few weeks ago for the very first time since getting it (4 AAs lasted 5 1/2 years). I don't play for an exorbitant amount of time in one sitting but over the years I'm sure its amounted to a lot of time collectively.

A company that makes peripherals should strive to have a reputation like that. Mad Catz has almost the complete opposite in terms of reputation. It's nothing they did recently... it's just all the years of neglect to quality piling up on them. For a moment with their Street Fighter 4 sticks, it seemed like they actually started giving a shit about their products, but too little too late. I said before that I would sooner completely rebrand and "start anew" than try to salvage the name. There's far too much negativity associated with it to ever recover. As a brand, it's worth very little.

As far as music game peripherals, I miss seeing Red Octane. I knew them back when they were filling a very big hole on the need to have DDR in the living room as a small company. They made good stuff. I'm fairly sure my GH1 guitar which has survived 1, 2, 3 and some PC play would still work and work well if I plugged it in today. Once again, another company bought out by a giant then used up and thrown away like a cheap condom after they've blown their load in it. They're no longer around today and there's no reason what so ever why they couldn't be other than having been bought out. They could've been putting Mad Catz to utter shame with peripherals if they were still around today as more of a generalist peripheral manufacturer.
