Harmonix trademarks Vidrhythm

Boston-area music game developer files application for video game software; studio mum on the move.

Harmonix is officially working on Dance Central 2 and new weekly downloadable content for its Rock Band universe, but it appears the Boston-area music game developer may also be rocking out to another tune.

Is Vidrhythm the name of a new Harmonix music game?
Is Vidrhythm the name of a new Harmonix music game?

Harmonix has filed a trademark (via Siliconera) with the United States Patent and Trademark Office for something called Vidrhythm. The title is listed under the goods and services description of "video game software; downloadable video game software; video game discs; video game cartridges; protective carrying cases for mp3 players and cell phones."

As of press time, Harmonix had not responded to GameSpot's request for comment on the matter. However, the title Vidrhythm certainly sounds as if it will remain in the music genre for which the developer has become known.

Harmonix--located in Cambridge, Mass.--has created a range of music games since its inception. The studio developed the first Guitar Hero title, Amplitude, and Frequency, as well as the critically acclaimed Rock Band and Dance Central franchises.

I loved amplitute. I loved how in awe my friends were of how good I was (we were playing it on easy, but for some reason, I picked up the game play faster than them). I am by no means good.

I love Harmonix. Fell in love with them the first time I played Frequency. I'll definitely be keeping an eye on this.

harmonix one of the few studios to keep trying something new with the music game genre :P people will remember guitar hero synonymously with activision, even though it was harmonix and red octane that got that ball rolling, and rb and dc have been innovative in their own ways aswell. If theres any dev to have faith in for a bit of innovation its these guys.

Sounds like a throwback to Vib Ribbon if you ask me. I hope it's the spiritual successor of it, I loved playing levels formed from songs that I just put in the ps1 from a cd!

It'll be nice to see Harmonix do something more creative with the rythm game now. People so quickly forget they did some interesting stuff before creating guitar hero.

My guess, a music video editing game ; could be very cool, particularly if you can access your RB library and make crazy videos to then upload online. If that turns out to be the case, remember who said it first!!!
