HBO's The Last Of Us Casts The Mandalorian's Pedro Pascal As Joel

Star Wars: The Mandalorian's Pedro Pascal has landed the role of Joel in HBO's The Last of Us.

Just like that, the iconic duo is complete. Shortly after it was announced that Game of Thrones alum Bella Ramsey would play Ellie in HBO's adaptation of the video game The Last of Us, we now have a Joel. The Mandalorian star Pedro Pascal has won the coveted role. The news was first reported by Deadline.

It took almost no time at all for Neil Druckmann, who wrote the video game and is also serving as a writer on the series, to confirm the casting. "Aaaaand there's the other half," he wrote of Pascal in a tweet. "Stoked to have Pedro aboard our show!"

What's interesting about Pascal's casting is that, per Deadline, The Last of Us has first position. That means HBO essentially has first dibs on scheduling the actor. However, given that his character on The Mandalorian stays masked nearly all of the time he's on-screen, chances are that won't be too difficult.

Thus far, a release date for HBO's take on The Last of Us has not been announced. With the announcement of the two leading cast members, though, clearly production is moving closer and closer to launching. As for how the show will compare to the game, executive producer Craig Mazin has said the plan is to introduce characters and events fans of the game series have yet to experience.

Don't worry about it skewing too far from the story told in the games, though. "I think fans of something worry that, when the property gets licensed to someone else, those people don't really understand it, or are going to change it," Mazin previously said. "In this case, I'm doing [the series] with the guy who [created the game], and so the changes that we're making are designed to fill things out and expand, not to undo, but rather to enhance [the source material]."

Good thing he didn't make a stupid tweet making political comparisons.to Nazi's lile Gina Carano did.... Oh wait, he did exactly that!! Good thing hollywood is so righteous & don't allow that "evil" thing know as diversity of thought. Oh, & where are a the virtue signalers sticking up for women, or complaining that men are treated better than women? Ahhh, it only matters when they agree with you politically, i see. Such frauds, lol.

Not who I would have chosen but an excellent choice nonetheless. He'll grow the beard and we'll forget that he doesn't look like Joel.

I know he's a little old, but for most of Last of Us Joel is pretty old.

I would love to see Bryan Cranston in the role.

These two are going to make for a fairly odd-looking Joel and Ellie. Seems more like a show being put together by the Syfy channel, than by HBO.

Benicio del toro would have made a good Joel character. Or maybe I’m just saying that since he’s one of my favorite actors... I don’t see Pedro making a good Joel but hopefully I’m proved wrong.

@scoty21: Nah, you are right, Del Toro is also a pretty good choice for the role, better than Pedro..

Dunno...I always liked the fan favorite Josh Brolin as Joel..."No Country For Old Men" I guess.

Sadie Sink...the Lil Tomboy-Redhead from Stranger Things would have made a better Ellie IMO. She was great in Season 1 of Stranger Things with her piss-off attitude.

@seanwil545: I'd offer up Grace McKenna. She was excellent in Gifted and also as young Theo in The Haunting of Hill House.

Meh. Can't say I'm crazy about the Joel or Ellie casting even if they are both good actors.

Ahhh good to know a male can make comments that would fire a female like Gina Carano but he can still be employed. Life is good.

@Vaildez: I've struggled to understand why people think these things are so similar. Being a bigot, and criticizing people for supporting a bigot, are pretty different imo.

@megagood2345: so it's okay only when they are part of the allowed groupthink? This country used to allow all voices & people could make their own decisions. Good ol days, sigh.

@feryl06: We're not talking about the most creative people here... I mean, they're not even starting with their own story/world/characters, so it's just "who will draw numbers" at this point.

Ahhh ok the guy who has used some of the same ignorant rhetoric as Gina but aimed in the other direction gets a new high profile job. Loved the first game / hated the 2nd (because I found it unfun and not for some moral reason) and was looking forward to the show but now not so much. Plus there are several other actors who could have made an equally interesting Joel.

@Vaildez: probably because he's the lead. Fire the lead, end your series. Disney loves money, so they wont' do it.

I thought that either John Krasinski or Jake Gyllenhaal could have pulled it off, but both are very high profile actors and I'd imagine their schedules are full of big movies lined up. Plus would be expensive to hire them.

Krasinski is good in Jack Ryan and looking forward to a third season of that. Last thing I watched Gyllenhaal in was Spiderman: Far From Home, not a bad watch, but Zendaya stole the whole show imo.

Pedro Pascal is great actor, so I'm sure he will give an impressive performance. I remember him from The Equalizer 2 and Triple Frontier, both good movies. I haven't seen Wonder Woman 1984 yet, but will get round to it at some point. The first would be hard to beat, very good film imo.

I really like Pedro Pascal, so I'm very disappointed that he accepted a role in an overhyped and overrated story like this.

@Pyrosa: reading comprehension really has taken a nosedive. This very article quotes the showrunner as saying they're not altering the story of the games, they're just not retreading it in order.

@Pyrosa: That's also ok... I'm open to any story they want to tell. The story of the games is great, and this one, even if different, certainly will be great too...
