Hellblade 2 Revealed For Xbox Series X, Continuing Senua's Saga

Senua's story will continue exclusively on Xbox Series X.

Following up the exciting console reveal Xbox Series X, the official name of Project Scarlett, Microsoft unveiled the follow-up to 2017's Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice, titled Senua's Saga: Hellblade II. As announced during The Game Awards, the game is once again coming from Ninja Theory, the studio Microsoft acquired back in June 2018. The announcement was accompanied by a new trailer for the game, which can be watched below.

The trailer showcases the graphical capabilities of Xbox Series X, running completely in-engine. It features Senua chanting and a group of what appears to be devotees in front of a human sacrifice. The trailer also occasionally cuts to scenes of warriors approaching a curious-looking mountain on a stormy beach. But before the trailer ends, we see that it wasn't a mountain after all--it's a gigantic being hunched over. As the group of warriors make the final steps on their approach, the giant being rears up to confront them.

Now Playing: Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II - In Engine Announce Trailer

No further details were shared, not even a release date or story details beyond what can be gleaned from the trailer. However, in our exclusive chat with Phil Spencer, we learned this footage was in-engine and running in real-time--implying that the Xbox Series X is one powerful machine. For more coverage on Xbox Series X, check out the rest of our stories in the pinbox below.

In GameSpot's Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice review, Alessandro Fillari wrote, "Hellblade's most notable achievement is the handling of an incredibly sensitive subject matter within an engaging and well-crafted action/adventure game. At its heart, the story is about Senua's struggle to come to terms with her illness. In the process, she learns to find the strength within herself to endure, and to make peace with her past. And in a profound and physical way, we go through those same struggles with her, and come away with a better understanding of a piece of something that many people in the world struggle with."

If you're looking to pick up the game prior to its sequel coming out, Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice is available on PS4, PC, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. Hellblade is currently on Xbox Game Pass, so you can download the game for no additional charge on Xbox One and PC if you already have a subscription.

I played the first Hellblade for a couple of hours and thought it was terrible. The combat was awful, and the so-called "puzzles" of lining up runes in the environment was tedious and unimaginative. I don't know if it gets better later in the game, but there was nothing fun about the little time that I played.

That's what happens to schizophrenics like Senua when they don't take their medication.

Lol, I like the developer in the video who waffled on whether PC gaming is dead. Doesn't he know console gaming is dead, and mobile is king. No wait, everything will be social media games like farmville.... wait that is dead. Ah, pc is dead and arcade is winner of it all. ......

Anyone who holds any faith in the prediction of what will exist and or what is dead is silly. It is the games, if a game is good the consumer will migrate to it. Regardless of what it is on.

I liked Hellblade, it was risky and different and the story compelling. It was also kinda niche. Not really a world or story that can branch off easily, also will the mechanism and atmosphere grow or will it simply grow in tedium. I do look forward to and hope for the best.

What I'm hoping for is they build on the gameplay. As much as I loved the game, the combat was rather boring.

While what they showed looked cool I feel a Sequel to Hellblade is unnecessary. The original game wrapped its story and theme up nicely so not sure where they can go from here.

@dragonsama: i feel the same. there's this small part of me that kind of feels betrayed when this stuff happens. i know it's silly, but it affects the first game as well and takes away from its greatness when there's a sequel made that just can't live up to it or is simply unnecessary, because the first game was already a perfect whole.

@dragonsama: My opinion is that there was many things Ninja Theory couldnt put into their first Hellblade game (concept, gameplay ideas, size, story) due to their limited budget and manpower and they felt they have enough new things to offer to justify a second entry

@tingtong: Honestly it looked better than the PS5 game shown. And that's coming from someone who plays PlayStation more than Xbox. And when was she ever "cute"? 🤣

@tingtong: The worst thing in any gamer personality is to try to diminish the quality of game just because it is on other platform.

Hellblade is an awesome game, the main protagonist is beautiful in her own way (especially the actress), and the ambience of the game is one of the best I ever played. So it sucks to see it in a Xbox, especially because I know me and I will buy a PS5 in the future. My hopes are on a PC release.

Same, although I will probably need a hardware upgrade to play it and that won't happen anytime soon. My setup is from 2013.

@tingtong: She was never cute to begin with. It was the empathy and the emotional feelings toward her as a game character(in a bizzare reality/fiction) the devs managed to realize which made her somewhat special

No one addressed it so guess I'll have to do it. Why would you make a sequel of a game that was on PS4 exclusive to Xbox? That's some first class silly. I've always been PS only and never the type to want multiple gaming platforms, but to give an idea of how much I want to play this, I'd almost consider buying Xbox just for that and nothing else. Then again that would be a waste, and I won't. Really disappointed.

@Destructionzz: it would be silly if the first game was exclusive to ps4, because then you could argue about for whom they are making this game now? because no xbox-player would have played it and the target group would be pretty small. i don't think it was ps4 exclusive, based on this becoming an x-box exclusive now.

i feel you, i loved senua's sacrifice as well. it was a great experience and great story. don't we all wish we could just let go sometimes...? it is so hard...

@Destructionzz: You just answered your own question. I do not think you understand how the gaming industry works, especially publishing.

Platform:::::::::::::: Developer :::::::::::: Publisher

If your a Developer, your main goal is to keep the lights on, employees paid, put out a game, and with luck- make some profit. And Developers can be more then just a few guys making a game, it can now include tons of studios working together. First you need money to make that game, but you would be crazy to invest your own money. (though some do) And one bad game, few problems, miscalculation, etc etc, and the developer goes under. There fore you need a Publisher loaded with cash.

Publishers are actually groups of investors, pooling their money and resources together - allowing them to invest in games with the promise of lots of money at a reasonable risks. Publishers want to make games/ books/ movies etc etc, but the financial risks and costs would be huge if they under took it themselves (though some try). Thus they need Developers to actually make the thing, and they spread their risks out so one bad egg doesn't mean disaster. Also taxes, insurances, distributors, data collections, accountants, and many many more allows those with the money, to keep the money, while reaping more with lower risk. But you need saps (consumers) to part way with that money and something for them to play them on. Which is a Platform.

Platforms - that chunk of hardware, so many people give more allegiance to then religion, family, or country it would seem. It is what we play games on, and it varies wildly. Arcade, home console, PC, mobile, and services. Platforms association with manufacturing, allows them to create the physical part of the equation and handle all the very complicated process of combining tons of materials together to produce a consumer electronic device that will make them tons of money. Platforms also perform another key job, that of a gatekeeper. But you need games, and the costs and talent needed to make games is risky - thus you need a developers and publishers.

Why would you make a sequel of a game that was on PS4 exclusive to Xbox? Because, that Developer is being funded by MS Publishing now, a Publisher actually separate from MS (reduces risk and liability)- but with the caveat of an Xbox exclusive. See when a game is sold, a developer might take around 8%, a platform takes around 25% and the Publisher the rest. The goal though- is that if something goes terribly wrong, damage is mitigated and absorbed by all to prevent the closing of one. Even first party developers, are still separate from the platform and publisher.

But Exclusives are a good thing, a very good thing. From Mario, halo, spyro - these are the games that push competition, innovation, quality, and quantity of games for us consumers. These roles are over lapped often, but without halo there wouldn't be a Uncharted or Mario, etc. But have some peace of mind knowing that Ninja Theory is funded. The people their know the lights will be on, that they have a place to come and work, create, and make a living. Even if the game runs into horrific problems - life will go on and the chance to make another game is possible.

@Destructionzz: Brand loyalty is important to a Developer/studio - but that doesn't pay the initial up front investment. If you are a true gamer - love the game- not the piece of plastic/ silicon/ metal it boots up on. Fan loyalty goes so far, your money carries the rest of the way. And little things like bad direction, a genre falling out of style, technical problems, F'ing typhoons!?!?, will that pay the bills, keep your employees paid for the 2-3 years before that game ever comes out.

And truthfully, in the equation of all that it takes to make a video game, fan support .... is barely a drop in the bucket. A successful game must have game.... I'll ask you.: Did fans refuse to play Halo because it was an xbox exclusive. Did Nintendo fans refuse to play Final Fantasy when it came out on Playstation, when Tomb Raider went from ecsluvie, multi-platform then timed exclusive, then back to multi-platform did the streets become crowded with protesters marching on city hall or burning flags? Nah they played the shit out of that game.

But that is a good thing, a great game is a great game. IF it is not on the platform that you presently own.... well so what. At least there is a great game out in the world for all others to enjoy.

@jenovaschilld: OK. But me personally, I've been a Final Fantasy fan since I was 10 years old, so 21 years, and I'm one of those fans who eat it up -because it is FF-, which some could say is stupid but for me it's just something about Final Fantasy which makes me love everything about it, and well the personal attachment as a long-time fan. So I understand what you're saying. But for me though, when they started spreading the FF's across different platforms, mobile phones, animes, and so on, I didn't buy all these just to play them, that is simply too much trouble. The main titles that release on the PS, yes.

Sticking to one works for me, like do you want 5 cars or 1 car that has everything you need? I've never been about quantity, so when I find a brand or type of thing I like I stick to that. Do I never change or try new things? Sure, when those things run their course, I go on to the next thing that works me. But I seek simplicity, so it is always one thing at a time. I'd find relating to more than one girlfriend at a time hard, and I feel the same about other things.

Also you make it seem like gamers never complain, they almost always do when there is a reason to. They are very vocal about what they like and don't. They always attack their favorite companies when they don't live up to expectations, like the infamous EA I hear so much about. Is the sequel to a PS game being -on PS- that unreasonable to want? I barely ever complain, I enjoy games and I'm happy. I never notice the flaws people talk about, I don't look for them. The thing here is, I can't even play the game to enjoy it, because it is not on my console. Hence my lament. Regardless of how the industry works, my disappointment is the same.

@Destructionzz: I hear you on the FF series. I played it on nes/snes then years later it went to PS1/PS2. So I bought those to play em. But I get what youre saying with it going on all kinds different platforms. As you don't want to keep getting different consoles. That being said, this particular game, the company now being owned my MS, makes all exclusive to them. But that also doesn't mean it won't be playable on PC.

@Destructionzz: And remember that the Final Fantasy series was a nintendo exclusive - that told them No to FF7 - they had to shrink it down or change it. Square developers who were also making Xenosaga moved to the new Playstation - an untested risky new machine. Wanting their game made the way they thought it should be, also to afford the cost of the game in their business.

I absolutely back your complaint and lament to exclusives and or timed exclusives, it is every fans right to 'vote' with your dollar and petition a change. Every gamer should be vocal and ask for what they want.

But I do however have to point you to the fact that this is a business. One that employees millions of people around the world. One that pays taxes, sales a product in tons of stores, pays the people that make the box, ships it, and even those that run used games. When MS bought up Ninja Theory - they did so knowing full well their IPs are popular and worth something. MS needs to do this, the battle for 9th generation console adoption is very important- not only for them as a business but also for the consumer.

Exclusives are actually a very good thing for gaming consumers. It means that a game developer was funded, that the lights will stay on and their kids fed or given BMW for their 16 birthday, lol. But more importantly that they will get to make 'another' game. No developer can make a game on the promise of sales from a game that may not come out for 2-3++ years from now. An exclusive also means, that game better be good - paying for a stinker of a game is worse, then just hosting one on your console.

I truly feel the pain of one person and understand- but I also know their is a greater need for all gamers whether they are PS, Nin, Xbox, PC, android, IOS, boardgames, etc. That is - first a game actually needs to get made, even if it is a sequel. The people at Ninja Theory celebrated when Hellblade 2 was green lit, they were given the chance to create. I am sure they wanted as many people possible to see, buy and consume their games around the world. It was a hard choice becoming an exclusive, but at least they will get to make this game and probably have enough funding for another game.

For me as a consumer, I purchase the console for the games I want to play most. Which right now is the playstation console and PC. As they have the RPG's the, JRPGs, SRPGs, and CRPGs I crave the most. When the Xbox first came out in 2001 and the xbox 360 they also had the games I wanted to play:, Skies of arcadia, KOTOR, JAde empire, Blue dragon, and so many more. I will admit I hold no loyalty to a console and own many different kinds, as I chase the games.

MAny games over the years have went from exclusives to multiplats and the other way. All in an attempt to simply just get made. I get your disappointment, but like most things in this world... it may be bigger then just you and me.

@jenovaschilld: Thanks for the in-depth explanation. You're right it is bigger than us. I guess I should be happy for them, and seeing those who can make games like that succeed is great. Maybe I can watch all the cutscenes and stuff online, get some idea of the story at least. I read it would probably be coming to PC with time, in that case I would need to upgrade my hardware. It could happen in the future.

@JustPlainLucas: That's ridiculous. When I have no other reason to buy another console I won't do so to play a single game. And I shouldn't have to when I played the first game on PS4. You don't force your fans to change console to keep playing certain games.

I don't think you understand how this works. It's not up to Ninja Theory. This was Microsoft's decision. If you want to be angry for them making Hellblade 2 an XSX exclusive, take it up with Sony for not buying them. This is starting to sound like Bayonetta 2 and 3 all over again. People were angry with Nintendo for securing the rights when they should have been angry at everyone else not showing enough interest. And people to this day still won't buy a Switch to play a franchise they swear they love.

And you don't buy a console just for one game. A console is an investment. It opens up your options and expands your horizons. You really shouldn't be a single console gamer, because it limits you, not just in terms of what to play, but in perspective. Also, if it's true that XSX is 100 % backward compatible, you wouldn't just be buying an XSX for one game, you'll be buying a console that has a full catalogue of three previous generations of games with it.

No one's keeping you from playing this game. If you don't want to invest in a new console, that's entirely your decision.

@JustPlainLucas: In my case it would be buying a console for "just one game" (Hellblade 2) which is exactly why I won't, no one does that. I'm not interested in another console, the PS4 has what I need and plenty of games, and I've been with PS since day 1, it would also be a waste of money and space and time to play on more than one. Who the hell has the time to play on more than one console, and now you're talking about games from three previous generations. It is barely possible to keep up with games as they come, -on one console-, then to go backwards to play catch-up and -on several consoles- while keeping up with games as they come. I have 6 big titles for my 2020 schedule on PS4, in the first half of the year. I'm lucky to average a game a month.

Thanks for saying what I should do, but no thank you. Based on my own reasons, yes, I am being kept from playing this game. If it was on PS like the other one I would have been able to. I'm disappointed, and that's my right to express, which is what I made a post to do. No matter how many consoles I can buy or how the industry works doesn't change my disappointment that the game is not on PS4.

As someone who struggles to keep up on my own backlog, I get it. But, perhaps look at it this way. What if Hellblade began as an Xbox exclusive? You never would have experienced the game. There's also the option of renting the console and game and then just returning it. Have you thought about that?

??????????????????????

a FOLLOW-up???????????? ahem,...

and they use THIS game to show off how cool the graphics on a new console are??? I guess they turned this psychologically heavy and far off mainstream game into a hack'n'slash for a wider target group? it would make sense after the end of the last game, but it also sounds so lame.

"You know all the stuff the 1st game was special for, like trying to portrait psychosis through audio and visuals? Yeah that was great, but we god of war now bois! Yee-haw!"

all of this is so weird. the 1st game really is not a game for kids. and not for most grown-ups either, to be honest. it is so dark. a fantastic game though.

@RaveNRolla: One trailer and you're already making assumptions about what the game will be like....

@ladonnatdq: based off of how they used the trailer. if it weren't to show off the new xbox' capabilities at the game awards i would be much more content.

i'm probably overreacting though.

Some powerful visuals on display, as did the original have. Hopefully this time they would make an actual game to go with them. Hellblade (2017) is an embarrassment.

One of the most memorable games of this gen and one of my personal favorites. Glad to see it getting a sequel.

@videogameninja: agree on the 1st bit, senua's sacrifice is amazing. very hard disagree on the sequel part though i have to say. what for? and showing it off for the graphics of new console? maybe i don't really get what is going on but i find this so incredibly weird.

"Hey kids, wanna play this incredibly dark game where they put a lot of effort into translating a psychotic disorder into a videogame as realistic as possible? It's fun i swear!"

i feel like there's something i don't get here, 'cause it seem so off to me. or maybe i feel different about this game than most people? am i alone in this?
