Hellblade Dev Shows Off Photorealistic Graphics For Project Mara

Ninja Theory has been hard at work on a short-form horror game, and a new video reveals the process behind Project Mara's visual fidelity.

Ninja Theory became a major developer thanks to the success of Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice. Since then, the studio has focused on two projects: the upcoming sequel Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2 and a psychological horror game dubbed Project Mara. While Project Mara's exact nature remains enigmatic, Ninja Theory has released a new video that shows off some of the tech powering the game's photorealistic graphics, and the results are quite interesting.

In the video above, Ninja Theory co-founder and chief creative Tameem Antoniades explains how the studio decided to recreate a real physical location for Project Mara, which takes place entirely inside one apartment. In order to achieve the desired levels of photorealism, the studio's artists jury-rigged a scanner to capture high-quality references of real-life materials. In a similar move, the studio hired a specialized firm to scan the interior of the apartment to make sure they recreated every detail.

Now Playing: Project: MARA - New Ninja Theory Game Teaser Trailer

According to Antoniades, Project Mara represents a substantial "shift" in the way that Ninja Theory approaches art. Instead of creating objects, the artists at the studio are now more focused on creating "systems that can create that object, and infinite variations of that object." This involves the use of procedural generation to recreate nuances such as the way dirt and dust collect in a corner of the apartment, or drip spatter on the back of a kitchen sink.

While the above images are quite impressive, we still don't have a release date for Project Mara, or for the hotly-anticipated Hellblade 2. The voice actor behind Senua recently teased some kind of Hellblade announcement, so we might know sooner than later.

I'm interested in these multiplatform games but I need to see more than a still frame of "photo-realism". NT is a good dev, sans Heavenly Sword of course, so I'm sure whatever they're cooking up will be fantastic.

Not sure what the game is but the tech is very impressive. Seems to me that the LOD model is completely different in this game than any other I have seen. Most textures get higher res as you get closer to them eventually you can get so close that it doesn't matter anymore and you can start seeing the texture for what it is. In this it seems they are adding geometry and particles to a surface as you get extremely close . Tessellating the texture or placing particles on top to mimic dust and things as you get closer to a texture is something I have not seen in real time graphics. I would caution this "project" does seem like its going to be a very small game . I think they are mainly using this as a test bed to test new technologies for something they might do in the future.

So as Holywood moves more and more to cgi the videogame industry is doing the opposite. Build the space in real life and then scan it. Looking forward to the next Assass’s Creed where they have to rebuild all of whatever the setting will be 😆.

On a more serious note, this is pretty cool!

Gorgeous, but it's easy to tell it's computer graphics still. The uncanny valley is a real thing still.

Also, as @tingtong said, where's the fun part? Everything looks amazing these days. Resident Evil 2 was gorgeous on the PS4 and Xbone. Hell, there's more than a few examples of excellent "realistic" artstyles on both the 8th gen powerhouses. Graphics have hit their ceiling - where's the gameplay?

I missed the part where there’s fun…

Seems to be a stronger emphasis on “art” here. I’ve basically already reached my limit on eye orgasms so I hope we don’t get too hung up on graphics and such in 2021 when the focus needs to be aimed at experience.

Speaking of art I need that dragon picture on the wall.

@tingtong: exactly, everything has to be super realistic...but why? People judge open world games by how big the map is? whats the point of that? And really, graphics technology is a tool, I will not remember a room which looked, well...like a normal room. what I will remember is art direction, floating cities, interesting original creature design, temples, ruins etc. not a sink, or a wall...its just ridiculous to watch a video when they zoom in so much, just to show the texture detail, when I'm playing all I need is a good enough texture detail, I will never stop and get few inches from my TV to zoom in and just be amazed at a texture :D whats the point? its just waste of resources. I guess where they lack creativity, they try to compensate by Recreating stuff...wow...just wow

@tingtong: Not sure why fun factor and graphics need to be mutually exclusive though.

They could produce a game with amazing graphics, while still being fun. We won't know until we see actual gameplay for the game.

@deicerniauskas: I feel like I'm looking at architectural renderings rather than a game. I mean, it's interesting from a technical perspective, but I see nothing that would translate into compelling gameplay.

@dzimm: exactly, I mean they are using unreal engine for quite some time to do car commercials, so yeah its quite remarkable what the engine is capable of, I get it is is photo realistic, but cmon, the most popular game is Fortnite, its not photorealistic, and when I boot up a game, o dont want photorealism, I need escapism from reality, to relax and enjoy art.

By the way UE car commercial link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VJEoY1JT71c&ab_channel=UnrealEngine

I wonder if Rob McElhenney used this guy’s image as the basis for his Ian character in Mythic Quest, because this guy looks just like that. He looks like a super tool with whatever the hell that haircut is, and his deep cut shirt and all those accessories.

In engine, if proprietary then omg, if unreal engine, get that shit outta here.

Anyone can do that with a beastly GPU, and home school education.

@Crazy_sahara: Maybe I'm misunderstanding you. Are you saying, if it's a proprietary engine, the footage looks great, but if it's Unreal engine, then literally the exact same footage looks bad?

I think the point he was trying to make was that anyone can do that with enough power if they're using middleware. Doing it from scratch is a real accomplishment.

This looks amazing. I hope we get more details about this once Hellblade 2 is released. Hopefully, Q3 2021.
