Here Are Nintendo Switch's Best-Selling First-Party Games, Ranked

Super Mario Odyssey is the Switch's best-selling title to date.

27 Comments

As part of Nintendo's latest financial results, the company revealed its best-selling Switch titles to date. As you may have guessed, Super Mario Odyssey is the Switch game with the most units sold so far, though a number of other games have also done well.

Super Mario Odyssey's sales total 9 million units worldwide, with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (7.3 million) coming in second. Next on the list is Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, with 6.7 million units sold, followed by Splatoon 2, which has sold 4.9 million units so far. Two more Nintendo-published titles--Arms and Xenoblade Chronicles 2--have each hit the million sales milestone, with 1.6 and 1.06 million sales respectively. Two further third-party games have hit the same million sales milestone, but we don't what those games are or precisely how many units they've shipped. Note these figures are correct as of December 31, 2017.

@Xristophoros: Hi Χριστόφορε! Well it is normal with demanding titles like Botw and with casual titles like MK8 for something like this to happen. All the kids that I know (and since I am working on a school I know many) who own a switch (by the way, many of them--the hottest Christmas gift by far) have MK8 and only one(!) has Botw and the poor one told me if I can go to his house and pass one of the divine beasts cause he stuck. It is a very hard game for young kids. On the other hand, kids can be familiarize themselves in MK8 in 10 minutes.

@Xristophoros: Was going to say the same. The Kart fan base is more prevalent that that of Zelda apparently.

@doctor_mg: how do you know that? do you have insider information as to what nintendo's projections were or what the budget was or what the required sales were to turn a profit on the title? 1m units really isn't much at all these days for a AAA game.

@Xristophoros:

Look at this game, do you really think it has the same budget as Call of Duty or Uncharted?

@doctor_mg: never said it had a cod or uncharted budget... but as far as jrpg's go, it looks like a very big production, only eclipsed by the final fantasy and dragon quest series. even persona 5 likely had a much smaller budget than chronicles 2... so yea, 1m units sold likely wasn't enough to be considered a financial success for nintendo. i wonder if it even turned a profit for them.

@Xristophoros:

Lol no you don’t actually think this. You just don’t want Xenoblade 2 to have seen success.

This is the most successful Xenoblade title to date in terms of sales. Tell me, why would they continue to make games that didn’t make them a profit? Three times no less? Heck, this one uses a pre-made engine too.

@doctor_mg: it probably turned them a profit, but not one many companies would be proud of. persona 5 has sold well over 2m copies and likely had half the budget of chronicles 2. that is a nice profit margin for sega by comparison. also, what else would monolithsoft work on if not this series? nintendo is sort of obligated to keep them on this franchise, whether it is ideal financially for them or not. not sure where monolithsoft goes from here... i would like to see them work on a new ip entirely with a new setting.

@Xristophoros: "and likely had half the budget of chronicles 2"

Ah, got some insider information there? :P

Also, it was announced about four months before Xenoblade Chronicles 2 launched that Monolithsoft was working on a new IP. Nintendo isn't obligated to keep them in any franchise.

@Xristophoros: I hate to use vgchartz, but according to them, XC1 sold a bit less than 1 million on Wii, at the end of its life when everyone had one. Then XCX sold less than that on Wii U, and even though that's to be expected, it doesn't seem to have hurt the franchise, since they immediately started working on XC2. I'm sure Nintendo knows these games are (relatively) niche, and they give them the appropriate budget.

Also worth noting, XC2 didn't have much marketing compared to Odyssey or BoTW or even Arms, actually. It was mostly word of mouth, which doesn't cost them anything. Considering the game had only been out for 1 month (on a console that's been out for less than a year), these numbers are pretty great.

I hope the sales are good to warrant a Xeno X port for switch or better yet a sequel!

Same here! I'm enjoying it a lot. The first one is one of my favorite RPG's, but I'd love to try out Chronicles X too.

Mario & Rabbids and Fire Emblem Warriors are probably those 2 3rd party games, since they use 1st party IPs. Alternatively Minecraft and Skyrim might also be up there

Remember that Star War: Battle Frontiers 2 selling 9 millions was consider a failure by EA.

@kaidou069: Stars BF2 sold to an install base of almost 100 million PS4 and XboxOne and that’s not even including PC. Mario Odyssey sold to an install base of almost 13 million. So yes, Mario was wanted way more than BF2.

@kaidou069: Battlefront released on multiple platforms and each of those multiple platforms has more units sold than the switch so of course the switch needs to hit a much smaller sales milestone to be considered successful.

@kaidou069: That title's advertising budget alone probably eclipses Mario's development costs, and there is also all the effort they put into creating an online gambling system. That shit's gotta cost money too...

Mario+Rabbids was the first game I've played through on the Switch and it is a ton of fun so I have to plug it when I can. I've since moved on to Odyssey and I would highly recommend it so far. Haven't enjoyed a Mario game like this since the first Galaxy.

Considering how little time Super Mario Odyssey has been out it just goes to show how powerful the Mario franchise is. Despite being out almost 6 months before Odyssey's release as well as being a critical darling and a launch title Zelda can only look as Mario leaves it in the dust. This is not at all to disparage Zelda in any way as it is has been heralded as one of the best games in the last 10 years but rather it just shows the overwhelming might that is the king of videogaming himself.

-KING OF GAMING NINJA APPROVED-

@videogameninja: You can't even compare Botw with odyssey (I prefer by far Botw personally). Both games are epic BUT of course Mario would sell more! It is for ages 5+ (I have a nephew who plays it and he is 5yo) while even 10yo kids have serious issues playing Zelda which is far more complicated. I have a student (I am a teacher) who is 10 and is begging me to go and help him with his first(!) divine beast. Don't get me wrong Odyssey is very complicated for kids 5-7 as well but I think for 8+ is perfect while Zelda is for 12+. This is a huge gap if you think the people who buy Nintendo products. The majority is young kids. Again, I am not saying that Nintendo consoles are for kids but during Christmas (I have this info from my class again) switch was the No 1 item in Santa's list here in US. Out of 11 kids (5-10yo) that I know that they own a switch, 11 of them have Mario, 10 of them Mario Kart and 1(!) Zelda. Also, don't forget about girls. Girls will buy for sure Mario but not Zelda. The whole battle style and items it is more about boys while Mario is universal, hence bigger success. For gamers though, Zelda is by far superior in every aspect. That's why after all these arguments that I set here Zelda is relatively close to Mario.

See for example Xenoblade 2, awesome game, only 1.1 m sales. Logical. You have to be a gamer to buy it and invest 200+(!!!) hours on it. Cheers!

@videogameninja: Zelda is not for everyone and some people are intimidated by this kind of games but Mario is a game that anybody plays so ...it makes sense that mario would be #1
