Here's An Update On The Uncharted And Last Of Us Movies

Neil Druckmann talks about the two upcoming films.

Movies based on Naughty Dog's Uncharted and The Last of Us franchises are in the works, but, as is often the case in Hollywood, they aren't progressing very quickly. Naughty Dog's creative lead Neil Druckmann sat down with 10 Cloverfield Lane director Dan Trachtenberg at the D.I.C.E. Summit today in Las Vegas for a conversation about storytelling. Naturally, the question came up about how the Uncharted and Last of Us movies are coming along.

Druckmann said Naughty Dog has had "some conversations" with director Shawn Levy (Stranger Things, Night at the Museum), a person who Druckmann says really "gets it" and "understands where we're at." Druckmann went on to say that Naughty Dog's feelings towards a film adaptation of Uncharted has "evolved" over years.

"We used to just be excited--oh my god, movies are looking at us! There could be an Uncharted movie on the screen, and then as more time passes on, we're not excited by a direct adaptation of the story we told, because we feel we've already told that story very well cinematically, so I don't know what else you could bring to it."

Spider-Man actor Tom Holland is confirmed to play a young Nathan Drake in the Uncharted movie. Levy's Uncharted movie will not be a direct adaptation of any of the four main Uncharted games, but instead it is expected to fill in the gaps with the younger Drake. Beyond that, however, we don't know any more plot details. One of the scripts was written by The Grey's Joe Carnahan--and Druckmann had some things to say about it.

Whatever the case, Druckmann said an Uncharted movie will feel strange to him and some fans because with different actors, it might not feel right. "For me--and I know for Naughty Dog and for a lot of our fans--Nolan North is Nathan Drake. Ashley Johnson is Ellie. Troy Baker is Joel. It would be very disorienting to see someone else in that role."

As an example, Druckmann said if they were to make a Breaking Bad movie and someone other than Bryan Cranston played Walter White, well, it just "doesn't make sense" and would "feel so wrong on so many levels."

Trachtenberg then mentioned the well-received TV show adaptation of the beloved movie Fargo as an example of how do it right. The two agreed that this is different because it has new characters instead of existing ones. "It captured the tone, it captured the world, it expanded up; I love that show. I think that's the way to do it."

Also during the talk, Druckmann spoke briefly of the Last of Us film. The script that he worked on at one point was a direct adaptation of the game--and it wasn't great. "Now, having some separation from it, I look back like--I don't want that movie to be made," he said.

The much-anticipated Last of Us sequel, The Last of Us: Part II, is currently in development for PlayStation 4. As for the Uncharted franchise, 2016's Uncharted 4: A Thief's End was the last mainline title in the series to be developed by Naughty Dog and the final one starring Nathan Drake. That being said, Uncharted 5 could be developed by another studio.

The next big video game movie is March's Tomb Raider, which stars Oscar winner Alicia Vikander in the role of Lara Croft. You can watch the newest trailer here.

I could never understand why Neil Druckmann let himself get involved with movies of Uncharted and The Last Of Us. Maybe his inflated ego got the best of him and now he's regretting his actions.

It's well known that games turned into movies or movies turned into games never work. Not only are they different genre's, but you can never repeat the art of the original. It's the same, when you recreate a classic painting, re-record a classic piece of music, remake a classic movie or make a sequel trying to cash in on the original magic. It ultimately fails unless the original was flawed in some way.

Clearly the actors in these games are cast in stone within the minds of the fans and a change would be unacceptable. Only those who have never seen the original would be able to accept it. I always said if you're going to make a Tomb Raider movie, it should be a high end CGI animation with the proper Lara assets, not a US actress like Angelina Jolie who looked nothing like Lara and more importantly didn't even look British. Lara was supposed to be a product of British aristocracy living on a posh mansion, not an Asian looking American woman. Miss cast. This is not being racist, this is about portraying people correctly. Imagine a movie about Martin Luther King played by a white actor. Totally wrong.

I really don't like the idea of and and TloU movies... Probably won't watch them, since the games are perfect as they are.

@joshrmeyer: Well, they are very cinematic games, but that's nothing bad at all. No one does games with such a love for visual details and cinematic expertise as Naughty Dog, and the more different games and unique genius developers there are in this world, the better.

I love games like Pillars of Eternity, Bloodborne, Zelda BotW (and many more of course, those are just some fairly recent examples), but I also love games from ND, especially TloU. All of those are completely different games and all are great in their own unique way to me. It's all about variety.

@Berserk8989: Yup... I like games and movies. So a mix is nice sometimes. If every game I played was like the one I'm playing now (Monster Hunter), I don't think I could handle it lol. Love the variety. Until Dawn even really impressed me, and that's about as cinematic as I've seen this gen. I guess I never pay $60 for that kind of game though either. But that's what a back log is for lol

Ugh, Druckmann.....

The involvement of that "mangina" does not inspire excitement at the prospect of a good Uncharted movie.

Is it too late to bring back Amy Henning?

@Flyin3lvl: Haven't watched the complete edition yet. Is it much different from the original release of AC, because I didn't find that to be all that great other than fan service? Kingsglaive on the otherhand, was actually pretty awesome.

@lionheartssj1: some of the dialogue has been switched and explains the plot better - specifically between rufus and cloud.

some added fight scenes and i do believe the final fight between cloud and sephiroth is a little longer but it does flow better ......

little touches like dirt on faces / cloths / scratches on cloud bike ..... those blood stains ........

i guess it was fan service but it does make a good story within this universe. kingsglavie was kinda boring, a sub plot that went no where and after watching ff7 many times you can see kings take the same beat and some of the same ideas from advent

Nope. Sorry. If these guys were really trying to make the best movie, they would animate it and have Naughty Dog write the script; otherwise, it just sounds like a half-ass job.

We really need Hugh Jackman as Joel for a Last Of Us movie. I'm not sure if he would be interested in it though.

Back in the early 90's videogame fans would be absolutely ecstatic about a movie adaption of their favorite virtual title but history has shown that hollywood has had more blunders than successes in the realm of game to movie adaptations.

As such, with a franchise as revered and acclaimed as highly as both Uncharted and The Last of Us I wouldn't be surprised if fans weren't bothered at all if either adaptation ever made it's way to the silver screen.

-WHAT DOES HISTORY SAY? NINJA APPROVED-
