Here's How The New Mortal Kombat Movie Stacks Up Against The 1995 Original

The comparison really shows how much CGI has improved in the last 26 years.

There's a new Mortal Kombat movie on the horizon for the first time in almost 25 years, and fans are anxious to see how it'll turn out. While the original 1995 movie got mixed reactions from critics, it was a blockbuster hit that fans loved, so we've compared some of its iconic characters, moments, and special moves with the upcoming film.

The footage is taken from the first trailer for the new Mortal Kombat, which was officially released a little earlier than planned due to a version of the trailer being leaked. Some of the scenes mirror moments from the 1995 film surprisingly closely--though the new film is set to include much more blood and gore thanks to its R-rating.

Now Playing: Mortal Kombat Movie Side By Side Comparison (2021 vs 1995)

The video compares how both movies have interpreted some of the franchise's most iconic characters including Sonya Blade, Liu Kang, Scorpion, and Sub-Zero. Antagonist Shang Tsung is shown to be a little more subdued in the new version, while four-armed Goro has benefited a lot from 25 years of improvements in CGI.

Kano is depicted true to the 1995 version, with Australian actor Josh Lawson playing the character who was retconned to have an Aussie accent in the original film. The 2021 film's version of Raiden is closer to the game version of the character however--though Christopher Lambert's iconic version of Raiden has since been immortalized in the game as an alternate skin in MK11.

Where the new film really shines is in the upgraded special effects, however, with beautiful takes on Sub-Zero's ice and Liu Kang's fire attacks--though the fact that the combat can now be properly R-rated doesn't hurt either. Mortal Kombat is due to release on April 16, 2021, with the movie coming simultaneously to cinemas and HBO Max.

“Goro has benefitted a lot from CG?” So you’re saying the half-second shot of him from the trailer already looks better to you than Studio ADI’s hyper-realistic animatronic from ‘95? That sounds a little like nonsense.

The first Mortal Kombat movie was a Paul W S Anderson typical.

Crap story, Christopher Lambert as Rayden (Are you kidding me?), Actors that couldn't throw a punch and let's not forget his signature EuroTrash Techno that was no more than a tragic rip off of 2 Unlimited's "Twilight Zone"

Bridgette Wilson may be beautiful, but her fight scenes, especially with Kano, were as pathetic as the Kirk vs Gorn in star trek. It was clear she never gloved up and was definitely, not trained before the movie.

Also, Paul WS Anderson's ability to turn gold into sh*t is notorious. We're lucky he wasn't married to Mila Jovovich at the time, otherwise, she would have been Sonya Blade.

This movie seems to be done much better, and if it isn't, it can't be worse than the original trilogy.

My only concern is this "Cole" character. Maybe he'll adopt the stage name "Johnny Cage" at some point, i don't know.

The trailer also shows some character build by establishing some of the backgrounds.

I hope it's well done.

@prydonian: OH I'm not disputing that.

Ice Ice Baby by Vanilla Ice was also a hit, didn't mean he didn't rip off Another One Bites the Dust from Queen.

All I am saying is that the song was a hit way before it was ripped off by the Mortal Kombat team and Twilight Zone by 2 Unlimited is a much better song.

"Actors that couldn't throw a punch"

You think Robin Shou, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa and Keith Cooke can't throw punches? I could throw in some other names but at it's time this film had some of the best fight choreography you could see in a movie, not to mention some actors with actual martial arts backgrounds.

Sorry you didn't like Chris Lambert. I didn't think they were kidding at all. Actually makes more sense to me that an ageless immortal god would be more eccentric than bold. A game to film that actually didn't suck for once but I guess everyone is a critic, huh? ;]

@FuBi2k: You can have Bruce Lee vs Jet Li in a scene. If the director is bad, the scene is going to look like crap.

Some of those actors were really good fighters, but the Direction killed it. If you think this film had some of the best fight choreography you could see in a movie, then you obviously didn't grow up in the 80s.

The saving grace on this movie was Subzero and Scorpion.

But again, I blame Paul W S Anderson. He was the director. Are you going to tell me that watching Sonya Blade vs Kano wasn't painful? How about Johnny Cage vs Goro? Not to mention that some of the names you threw down barely got to fight. Liu Kang vs Shang Tsung wasn't a fight. It was a series of camera tricks that didn't showcase anything that was fun about the game.

Christopher Lambert as Raiden is a joke. Raiden was tied down from the get go and we didn't get to see any fights involving the God of Lightning due to some made-up rule created for the movie because they found out midway that "Highlander" didn't actually know how to fight.

Raiden was an homage to "Lightning" which was a character in Wes Craven's "Big Trouble in Little China". If you look at the first mortal kombat game, Raiden's lightning mimicked Big Trouble in Little China, perfectly. Paul W S Anderson was such a bad director that a movie that came out 10 years before Mortal Kombat had better lightning effects.

Again. This is not a commentary on the talent. This is a commentary on the director. Paul W S Anderson has ruined everything he touched.

Was Mortal Kombat the worst video game adaptation? Nope. We've seen some absolute disasters with Street Fighter, Bloodraine, House of the Dead, Dead or Alive... I mean, the list is extensive. That's a very low bar.

Next to Enter the Dragon, Clan of the White Lotus, Big Trouble in Little China and even Bloodsport (Just to name a few, because the list is extensive), Mortal Kombat is a let down and I am being nice here because I know you're sensitive to harsh criticisms.

Now, as far as everyone being a critic. Yes we are, we all are. You wouldn't be here arguing this if your "expert opinion" wasn't different than mine.

But then again, you think "this film had some of the best fight choreography you could see in a movie", so there's really no point in arguing.

@kstaggs87: You are correct there. TO be fair thou, we could take a dump on our pants, smear it on the camera and it would still be a better movie than Annihilation.

@miguelgreene: Go to youtube, listen to the Mortal Kombat theme song from the 1995 movie. I think the song is called Techno Syndrome.

Then search for "2 unlimited Twilight Zone" .

Listen to both, and it should be clear.

This was a big thing back in the 90s with MTV News covering it like it was their "Watergate" and New Line Cinema settled it quietly with the original band.

@tlpina: Oh wow, I was born in 85.. so I was 7 when Twilight zone came out and I do remember hearing a song back than that did sound just like the MK theme . But at the time I was little and to me everything sound the same back than. but yeah they did RIP them off . its probably why I notice that MK usually dont use that theme often in the new games or trailers
