Here's The Eye-Popping Amount Of Money Robert Downey Jr. Is Reportedly Getting To Return To MCU

Former Iron Man actor Robert Downey Jr. is reportedly getting a very rich payday to return to the MCU in a new role.

During Marvel Studios' Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Robert Downey Jr. officially confirmed his return to the MCU. Instead of playing Tony Stark/Iron Man again, Downey will step into the role of Victor von Doom aka Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. The actor was well-compensated for his first run in the MCU, which is estimated to have earned him $500 million to $600 million. But Downey's new paycheck is reportedly for an extremely sizable amount of money.

According to Variety, Downey is making "considerably more" than $80 million for the two films, with additional incentives if Doomsday and Secret Wars reach certain box-office benchmarks. Downey is also said to be getting access to a private jet, as well as a dedicated security team, and a "trailer encampment."

Anthony and Joe Russo, who are returning to the MCU for Doomsday and Secret Wars, will also reportedly receive significant raises for directing the two films. The Russos will receive $40 million per movie, with additional box-office incentives that will kick in if the two films reach $750 million and $1 billion worldwide. However, the report said that Russos will not get any back-end percentage from the movies under the the deal.

The two new Avengers movies will begin filming in London in the second quarter of 2025. Avengers: Doomsday will arrive in theaters on May 1, 2026, with Avengers: Secret Wars following it on May 7, 2027.

The RDJ reveal makes little sense without any context. The shock value of bringing him back just adds confusion and uncertainty to the MCU.

I understand his role in both films involves eating cheeseburgers and verbally abusing Jeff Bridges and Gwyneth Paltrow.

Aren’t these the same folks that have absolutely no problem giving all of my money away to people?

Anyways, more importantly, Tony Stark is dead, right? And now Iron Man is played by Don Cheadle or something like that?

Honestly, I stopped watching after the movie where everyone came back aftet the big guy snapped his fingers and half the people disappeared. Is it gonna be really weird seeing Dr. doom look like Tony Stark… But at least you know, they will take advantage of the fact and make comments throughout the movies

Disgusting how much money one individual can have and here we are, the plebs, admiring and supporting them while we can't afford a roof over our head unless we sign a lifetime of wage-slavery.

Actors & athletes paychecks prove how topsyturby society priorities are.

@sippio: Not really, no. Entertainment, and more precisely storytelling, has always been a big part of the social fabric. Having heroes to look up to and inspire us is a very important thing for humanity, regardless of whether they are fictional or real. Also, it's not like watching a movie is a big ticket purchase.

No, it's not about "priorities", it's about monetizability. When your individual acting/athletic skills are a key factor in bringing in BILLIONS of dollars in revenue, then you should be compensated accordingly. This does not change for other jobs, but rarely is an individual such a key factor for pulling in the big bucks outside of sports and acting.

To put it another way, Bezos isn't rich because he forced people to use Amazon, he's rich because he made a platform that everyone WANTS to use because it is incredibly convenient when compared to shopping at brick and mortar stores, especially if you live in more rural areas where the local shops tend to only stock basic necessities.

The same is true of RDJ. He made Iron Man a household name and was a major draw to get people to buy tickets across the world.

@Akriel_Boulve: per the interwebs:

“ For example, Marvel’s Black Panther involved more than 3,100 local workers in Georgia who took home more than $26.5 million in wages, while 20th Century Fox’s popular television series This Is Us contributed more than $61.5 million to the California economy. And in New York, Oscar-nominated films The Post and The Greatest Showman contributed more than $108 million to the state’s local economy.”

@Akriel_Boulve: Not to mention all the jobs that are created because people are willing to watch this guy pretend to be somebody else.

I’m actually curious what that number would look like… All the support staff jobs involved with the movie, the movie theater jobs and surrounding restaurants, etc.

….googling…

@Akriel_Boulve: yeah I don't care.. meanwhile American citizens can't afford rent and groceries. You think over 80 million is justified? Haha

@restatbonfire: Justified? By whom? I'm arguing that there is no "justification" only simple market forces at play. If RDJ can revitalize the ailing Marvel Franchise which was a BILLION dollar industry, then yes 80 million would be justifiable from a corporate expenditure viewpoint. You have to balance that equation of what you put in vs what you hope to get out of it, it's rather simple when you get down to it.

Also you should realize that if the American people are struggling too much financially, then they will not spend their money on luxury goods like Movie Tickets, so the industry has a vested interest in the wellbeing of their customers. The same is true of literally every other industry. You can't get blood from a stone and they are keenly aware of this fact post covid.

How is this that hard for you?

@Akriel_Boulve: so why not implement a maximum wage? I understand what you're saying on a business level, but have you thought about it morally? No one needs to be paid that much, I will die on this hill

@Akriel_Boulve: I'd still argue nobody should be getting paid that when people are dying in your own country from being homeless, drug ODs etc. Yet its important we get this movie out and RDR who I like as a person, gets his 80m that he desperately needs.

Dumb it down and it ridiculous.

@xnshd: Tell me, where oh where do movie studios get their money from, hmmm?

Answer: Us the audience. If they don't produce high quality movies that people can afford to go to, then they STOP GOING. As such it is in the industries best interests for the American people (and those around the world) have a decent amount of disposable income to spend on going to the movies.

The MCU was a BILLION dollar industry, employing THOUSANDS of workers, from animators and set designers to personal trainers and musicians and toy makers and so many more. Without the iconic characters that entire system grinds to a halt and hurts all the workers at every rung of that ladder, not just the big wigs.

You're right, you have to dumb it down in order for it to be ridiculous, because when you understand the movie industry you realize that the money they spend in attempting to turn profits is paying people's wages, and not just RDJ's.

@xnshd: Your argument is very stupid. Whilst I have gripes with hollywood, you are looking at 1 private actor's paycheck. You haven't mentioned the "relief packages" of 80 BILLION usd sent to Ukraine/Israel, for war and laundering. The money exists to solve these problems, you're just barking at a random richer individual's paycheck instead of the true cycles that should solve these problems.
