As you probably already knew from GameSpot's giveaway, Evolve's Big Alpha test kicks off on Xbox One on October 30, and PlayStation 4 and PC on October 31. Recently, developer Turtle Rock Studios revealed what the Big Alpha will include, and what kind of PC you'll need to run it.

If you participate in the Big Alpha, you'll be able to play eight out of the total of 12 Hunters, two of the announced Monsters, and three maps in the game's Hunt mode.

The Big Alpha will also let you experiment with the game's progression system, which works on two levels: Character Progression and Player Progression.

Character Progression refers to experience earned within the match that you can use to improve your character's skills, weapons, and abilities. When you master one character completely, you'll unlock the next character in that class, be it a Monster or a Hunter.

Player Progression refers to experience that goes towards your overall player rank, regardless of class. There are 40 levels in all, and you'll earn perks that you can select before a match along the way. Some examples of perks include weapon switching speed, damage bonus, health regeneration, and smell range.

You can find even more details about the progression system on Evolve's website.

Finally, if you plan on playing the Big Alpha on PC, these are the minimum and recommended specs, though keep in mind that they are not final. Turtle Rock said that it still has a lot of optimizing to do before the game ships on February 10.

Minimum specs

  • CPU:Intel Pentium D 3GHz or higher or AMD Athlon 64 x2 Dual Core 6400 2.4 GHz or higher
  • RAM: 4GB
  • GPU: AMD Radeon 5770 or higher or NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 or higher
  • HDD: 15GB Install
  • OS: Windows 7 64-bit

Recommended specs

  • CPU:Intel Core i7 920 2.67GHz or higher or AMD A8-3870 3GHz or higher
  • RAM: 6GB RAM
  • GPU: AMD Radeon R9 280 or higher or NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680 or higher
  • HDD: 15GB Install
  • OS: Windows 7 64-bit

The game doesn't even remotely look good to warrant requring GTX680. So lame.

So Evolve's Recommended Specs are Ubisoft's Assassin Creed Unity Minimum Spec.

Either Ubisoft has inflated their spec or have chosen not to optimize...probably both.

<< LINK REMOVED >> ACU's specs are misleading. The "gtx 680 or better" if more like 680 or newer, because they won't validate any gfx card older than a 680 and I'm pretty sure a 750 will be just fine, and will is more than enough for the console settings (900p/30 fps on high). and their cpu reqs are utter bullshit. the i5-2500k and the i7-3770 are very very close in gaming performace and gap between the 2500k and amd pII x4 940 is huge.

Hard to optimize for PC when you have 15 studios working the game at once so you can release a new one (or two) every year.

I've never played the Creed series, but there does seem to be new Billboards plastered around town every year.

For some reason I feel more inclined to trust the company that has been running the game on a myriad of builds for the last year over a random internet person.

@deathstream @daumex @Proxish @Ripper_TV That's a big LOL! You keep trusting some online company while normal people simply put 2 and 2 together. You don't need much brain power to realize that an Athlon quad core in A8-3870 isn't remotely in the same league as a i7 quad core with hyperthreading. Not even the latest APU can't compare with old i5 let alone i7s... Just check for a start Cinebench score list << LINK REMOVED >>

<< LINK REMOVED >> Well I guess what appeals to me is that it is a asymmetrical shooter. I've played games like COD and Battlefield hundreds of times and I've grown bored of them. I like the idea of humans vs some kind of creature, but you get play as that creature. I'm just glad it's not more zombies/mutants because I seen enough of those already.

Also since the main focus of the gameplay is four hunters hunting down a monster, it kind of reminds me of another game that I enjoy which is Monster Hunter.

I don't really believe in "Can your pc handle it" i think it should be called "Can the devs optimize?"

Because still to this day i think battlefield 3 and 4 is the most detailed/graphic rich games i've ever seen and those games can run perfectly on a toaster

DICE and Crytek are the only devs that can optimize a game these days.

<< LINK REMOVED >>Not really sure you understand how 'optimization' works :p It's not really some magic coding they include/neglect that makes the games run perfectly by default. It's more the plethora of settings they can allow the user to tweak. The smooth transition to Keyboard/mouse, especially if it's a port. You see console ports are great sometimes when they allow the PC user to change settings based on their rigs. When you don't see Xbox buttons in your monitor.

Take Evil Within, lazy optimization for the PC. Assassin's Creed: BF? Great optimization. A sea ("_) of settings to play with, to ensure a smooth sailing ("_) experience on all different rigs. Not only that, its creators also released a detailed article explaining what each setting did, cuz what the **** is God Rays.. Great support.

Usually the console versions are optimized well, or well enough, cuz you can't control their settings. The PC version is then usually half assed. Great optimization for a PC player won't mean you'll be able to run the game on ultra settings on your "toaster." It means you'll have the option to change things around so your toaster can run the game. For Evolve, as they said, the game will still require a 680 or better to run well on top settings. 560 or higher, you'll tone down settings to ensure smooth FPS. Lower than 560? Probable FPS drops even with lower settings. For a new game, it sounds reasonable.

@Dizoja86 @squall_83 I never said the specs were wrong. I also wasn't just making a note that they mention a specific card. I was quite surprised that the demand was so high. The Radeon 280 is a damn powerful card. I'm just saying that the requirements are way higher than they usually are for most games and I'm glad my rig can handle it. That's kinda what this article was about. What the hell is wrong with you people?!

Looks like PC will just be higher res and frame rate, probably struggle to find a PC gamer who plays shooters with specs that low.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Just? There's a *huge* difference between 30FPS and 60FPS. It's going to be pretty funny when people who never considered how important 60FPS is until they see them in Youtube now overtime now that you can *finally* watch 60FPS footage on the site.

Thanks for the lesson, but I know the difference since I own a beast of a pc. I was talking in terms of more detailed models, textures & lighting etc. yes frame rate and resolution are important, but even your average gaming pc isn't being optimised when console versions have to be made as we all know.

@XNEXUS666X The gap between the "average gaming pc", according to Steam at least, can play this game just fine w/ more than playable models and lighting.

The console version only has one baseline configuration that cannot be changed in order for no excuses for scaling and optimizing the game on consoles.

That said, this game uses an engine with *so* much to offer for most modern PC GPUs to take advantage of that current consoles cannot take advantage of due to the ATI GPUs the Xbox One and PS4 decided to shop with.

So, PCs will not just have a "higher res and frame rate".

Also a trump card a PC version of this game will have is the ability to you to choose between a standard controller or a keyboard and mouse.

You also will be able to calibrate the game to be a better experience as your PC needs escalate as time goes on compared to consoles, and don't have to SOL if you decide to stop paying for Xbox Life or PSN.

If a gamer has a rig in between or above the min-recommended specs of the game, the few thing that can make the PC version not the best version of the game to get is if that gamer really has enough friends that prefer or play the game on console (or can only play the game on console) for a variety of reasons.
