Here's What's Next for Fallout 4 Mods

Bethesda shares its plans for improving mod support.

With Fallout 4 mods available on PC and Xbox One (and coming soon to PS4), Bethesda has launched a new section of its website devoted to developer notes regarding future updates. Among the first posts there is a roadmap for what's coming this summer to improve the mod experience.

Perhaps most importantly, Bethesda says it's "working with Microsoft and Sony to increase the storage limits on consoles." Presently, mods are capped at 2 GB, limiting what's possible. It also plans to offer better support for reporting mods, which could help to reduce the number of mods that have been stolen and published by people who didn't create them. Improved security is also in the works; uploading mods to Bethesda.net will require users to link their website account to their Steam account.

Many of the other upcoming features are what you'd expect. Bethesda is looking to improve the UI for browsing mods on the website and in-game to make it easier to find new ones. It also plans to add support for more images, new comment options on each mod's details page (such as replying to or liking a comment), a way to mark a mod as a work-in-progress, statistics to see how popular mods are, and a unified version of mods so that each platform doesn't need its own details page.

You can see everything Bethesda has planned here, and check out the dev notes section of its website here.

Fallout 4 mod support was just recently added on Xbox One, with a PS4 launch expected before long. The PC version added official support earlier this year, though considering how much more popular Bethesda says mods have been on Xbox One, it's possible that computer players are sticking with the existing, unofficial ways of using mods.

Lately it's all about mods, mods, mods. How about some core gameplay improvements?

Storage limit is pretty disappointing currently.
I'm hoping to get some more visual ones (the flora one is awesome) for the next playthrough I do in a few weeks.

As others have said, though, I'm also looking forward to more DLC. They left the door open for what else they're adding in via season pass, so here's hoping.

"It also plans to offer better support for reporting mods, which could help to reduce the number of mods that have been stolen and published by people who didn't create them"

It's a start. Tired of those lazy fcks who release mods on consoles without crediting the original mods authors and even going as far as demanding donations. Unless they want to see the amount of mods requiring scripts not supported on consoles increase, they better fix this sht. No compatible PC mods = Death of mods on consoles as it stands now. If Nexus was able to sort those type of shenanigans, i fail to see why a multi-million $ company wouldn't be able to do the same.

@zerofrust: . . . . but Nexus hasn't got the mods working on consoles? So they haven't sorted out anything.

@analgrin:

Sigh....I was talking about mod theft. Nexus put in place a pretty good mod theft report system which works. I couldn't give a single fck if the mods hosted there work on console or not. Mod theft, as a modder myself, that's what bothers me.

When i was talking about script not compatible on console being used in mods, i was referring to modders purposefully incorporating those scripts in their mods as a deterrent for console mod theft. If some dumbass mod thief not knowing what he does release them on consoles, it could cause memory leak, save file corruption(and it did actually happen) and all others shenanigans. That's why i said "No compatible PC mods = Death of mods on consoles".

Bethesda tried to treat this issue lightly. They seriously shouldn't because the minute PC modders will start inserting script in drove, Bethesda whole Xone/PS4 modding will be a flop.

@zerofrust: Ah ok. I wasn't aware of Nexus anti theft policy. I just download my Mods from there.

Looking forward to some new "formal" DLC news here in a few days... Mods are cool and all, but more "trick"-focused as opposed to worthwhile quests & such.

@Pyrosa: You didn't hear it from me, but the next DLC that they're going to announce at E3 will be adding various different dog armors for Dogmeat.

@Pyrosa: Dang we just got dlc for 3 months in a row, and Far Harbor just came out maybe 3 weeks ago. If they pump out too much dlc, ppl are just going to claim milking. I hope there is some news, but I dont see any dlc coming for at least 2-3 months.

@inebriantia: I mean they came out with 5 in a short span for FO3 and they were all story based. As far as I am concerned we have gotten like 1.5 to 2 dlcs so far (workshop is garbage and automotron felt a lil lacking) which are coming long after release. I wouldnt be mad at another story dlc in July.
