Game Of Thrones Star Could Audition To Play Tomb Raider's Lara Croft In Prime Series

A shortlist of names has appeared for who could play the lead.

A Tomb Raider TV series in the works from Emmy-winning writer Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and now two names have surfaced for who could play the lead role of Lara Croft.

Deadline reported that Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner and Bohemian Rhapsody's Lucy Boynton are on the "wishlist" to play the role. The site said they have not auditioned yet but are among those being seriously considered for the part.

Oscar-winner Angelina Jolie played the role of Lara Croft in multiple Tomb Raider movies over the years, while another Academy Award-winner, Alicia Vikander, portrayed Lara Croft in 2018's Tomb Raider.

Deadline said the audition process for the new Tomb Raider show has been "shrouded in secrecy," and noted that the casting process to find Lara Croft could be "one of the hottest TV casting searches" of the fall season. The site also reported that Deadpool & Wolverine's Emma Corrin and Station Eleven's Mackenzie Davis are on the wishlist but "are not believed to be testing" for the role.

No other names were mentioned in the report, but it's likely there are more actors being considered for the part.

The Tomb Raider TV series is being made for Prime Video, whose owner, Amazon, is also publishing the next Tomb Raider game from Crystal Dynamics. This new game is not connected to the series.

Waller-Bridge is best known for creating the TV series Fleabag and writing and producing the show Killing Eve. She played Helena in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny and was brought on to help improve the script for the James Bond movie No Time to Die.

"There's so much I can incorporate," Waller-Bridge previously said about her past experiences with Indiana Jones and James Bond. "I mean, the character of Lara Croft was inspired by Indiana Jones and James Bond. So there's so much, and it just felt like the perfect final step in my own personal adventure through this kind of franchise world."

2018's Tomb Raider movie made $275 million worldwide and is among the highest-grossing video game movies of all time. Plans were in place for Vikander to come back for a sequel, but the situation got muddied up when Amazon bought out MGM.

All I had to see was, “from Phoebe Waller-Bridge” to know this show is a big “Nope.”

If they were going to look at a GoT star for Lara Croft, Maisie Williams would be better. She's got the age, skills, hair color, and demeanor to pull off Lara Croft.

Acting as Arya, she showed a lot of development similar to how Lara could develop.

Acting as the immortal girl in Peter Capaldi's Doctor Who, she also demonstrated her development and sense of adventure.

I hope the casting director takes a second look at Maisie Williams.

@yerac82: At 5ft 1, Williams wouldn't be a good fit since Croft has always appeared in every iteration as reasonably tall and athletic.

@yerac82: Lol. She doesn’t look anything like Lara. That is a wild suggestion. She’s very strange looking. When GoT was ending, even she admitted she doesn’t have the look to get much work after the show. Your reasons for picking her are hilarious. Hair color? Dye exists. Demeanor? People can do this weird thing called, “acting.” Age? You don’t have to be the age the character is. Many people look a different age than they are. There is also makeup, or de-aging CGI. Don’t ever try to pursue a career in casting.

I've not seen Sophie Turner in anything that suggests she's got particularly strong acting capabilities... She was very fogettable as Jean Grey. Certainly wouldn't be my choice to pin a potential franchise on her.

She doesn't have the charisma nor the physicality to be Lara Croft. She's a dramatic actress, at best, and not a great one.

Turner would be a huge miscast.

Someone like Ana de Armas or Rebecca Ferguson would be better. Even Camilla Ludington (who was VA for the last 3 games) would be better.

Headline reads "Game of Thrones Star Auditioning To Play Tomb Raider's Lara Croft".

Yet in the 2nd paragraph the article states "the site said they have not auditioned yet".

So Gamespot, are you blatantly lying in your headlines now?

@just_visiting: auditioning could mean they are doing it sometime in near future. They didn’t say auditioned which would be past tense.

I don’t normally stick up for the editing on this site but in this situation you’re kind of in the wrong, if this actress will be auditioning for the part

@just_visiting: regardless of the change, auditioning is not a past tense word meaning it happened already. You were outright saying that they claimed it happened. They were merely suggesting they had information she was going to audition. I’ll agree the change makes it more clear as they obviously don’t have bonafide info she will audition.

@feral411: I don't really care if it is a past tense word or not and that isn't the issue. My issue with the wording of the old headline was that it would be understood by any reasonable person to mean that Turner was confirmed to be actively auditioning for the role, either now or booked in for sometime in the future, yet the article then stated that she was simply on a "wish list" of people who the producers want to come in and audition for the role and hadn't actually made any move herself to audition yet. And if they had solid information she was going to audition from an industry insider as you believe, why would they not mention that in the article? Regardless of wether it's current affairs or entertainment, a journalist can't just report the news based on hunches or possibilities and present it as confirmed or fact. And I was never saying they claimed it had happened. I claimed that they said it was happening, which they then changed because they don't actually know if she is or not. It was misleading, false and an example of sloppy journalism. I'l take the fact that Gamespot themselves took steps to correct it over your opinion.

@just_visiting: it’s entertainment news. They can report it how they want. Just like news media reports stories the way they want, with however they want to spin the story. It’s just up to the viewer to understand to check other resources and not believe one media outlet.

Still doesn’t change you were comparing the word auditioning (in the title) to not auditioned yet (in the content of the article), suggesting that by saying auditioning they were saying she auditioned already.

@DELETED: "I’d love to see your source to definitively prove that Sony hasn’t acquired any other characters. Unless you’re an insider or have a source, you’re just making claims with no confirmation"

Funny how you expected this user to prove his sources on an article comment yet you don't care if Gamespot writes whatever they like regardless if it is true or not.

@just_visiting: you need to get a life! Imagine going back probably a month or more in someone’s comment history trying to find something that isn’t remotely related to the topic of conversation.

Where did I say I don’t care if gamespot writes truth or not? I said they can do whatever they want, just like any mainstream media will spin stories. Never did I say I think that’s ok. I even stated it’s the readers responsibility not to take one source as fact. Which is exactly why I was asking that person what his supposed source was to try to see if it was verified elsewhere.

But please keep going, you’re only proving my point you don’t have a grasp on the English language 😂

@feral411: Did Gamespot say Turner was auditioning? Yes. Is Turner confirmed for auditioning? No, because Gamespot themselves admitted it by revising the article. My initial statement was correct and you are just annoyed that you got proven wrong after the revision so you are just grasping at any way to make yourself look correct. It's a dead end. And finding your previous comment took about 20 seconds of my life because I can read and out of curiosity wanted to see if you made a habit of trying to challenge other people's "grasp of the English Language".

@just_visiting: previous comment had nothing to do with commenting on understanding of English, so bringing it up is irrelevant, regardless of it corroborating my previous point about readers responsibility.

This will be my last message because you still fail to see your error in comparing the two words at the time. I was not ever commenting on the veracity of writer’s info, only the fact that the word auditioning would mean it hasn’t happened yet, which is what the article stated. That she hadn’t auditioned yet. If you can’t understand the difference at this point it’s clear you never will.

Auditioning = hasn’t don’t it yet

Auditioned = they’ve done it

Hasn’t auditioned yet = hasn’t done it yet

Go back and read all my responses and you’ll see I was only ever pointing out those differences / similarities.

@feral411: On reading back as you requested, you said;

"in this situation you’re kind of in the wrong, if this actress will be auditioning for the part".

"IF" being the operative word. Since the actress was NOT auditioning for the part, you just admitted in your own words that I wasn't wrong.

@just_visiting: keep going lol. Multiple other sites are saying Turner is testing for the role, which means final stages of auditioning (normally).

So IF she has been auditioning then you’re wrong, like I said from the start

@feral411: "Game Of Thrones Star Auditioning"

"Game Of Thrones Star Could Audition"

Can you not see the huge difference in those 2 statements and how each has an entirely different meaning? One is stating as fact with no suggestion of doubt that Turner is actively auditioning (which is a lie) while the other is stating that she could audition but hasn't actually done so. I don't know how much you know about journalism but media outlets (especially network news) can't just "report stories the way they want" and leave the reader/viewer to google if it's true or not. There is fact checking, source checks and if there is anything in doubt, that needs to be explicitly clarified to the reader by acknowledging that the story is unconfirmed, is a rumour, or can't be independently verified, otherwise they might as well be Facebook where anybody with an internet connection can write whatever they like and present it as fact. Since Gamespot is a professional entity with paid writers who adhere to journalistic standards, I expect what I read to be the truth. If you are happy reading articles from what is deemed to be a reputable source then having to use google to ascertain if it's true then that is your issue.

@just_visiting: oh I see the difference. I’m not disputing there is a difference. What I’ve simply pointed out and you keep disregarding is that you were suggesting they were lying because they said auditioning and she had auditioned yet. Those could mean the same thing!

IF she was scheduled to audition but didn’t yet then both are true! I understand she isn’t confirmed so it’s not the case, but again I was pointing out your ignorant error in claiming they lied because she had yet to audition but used the verbiage auditioning.

It’s 100% clear you don’t have a good grasp on the English language because you can’t see your error. I’ve not once said the article writer was correct or writing facts.

@feral411: Anybody with a basic comprehension of the English language could read the article, see where it states she "is on a wish list" and "hasn't auditioned yet" then put the two together and come to the conclusion that she hadn't actually entered in to the audition process which makes the headline false, which Gamespot obviously realised. As I said before, I was correct in my statement that the headline was a lie, hence the correction.

Sophie Turner as Lara Croft! That would go down as one of the worst and perplexing casting choices ever.

The irony is that a young Hayley Atwell would have been perfect, as she is close to the game depiction of Lara Croft as you could get.

Millie Bobby Brown is also a very good choice, if she wanted to do it.

Rebecca Ferguson or Anya Taylor-Joy. Saoirse Ronin and Millie Bobbie Brown if they can pull off a good English accent.

@faz9: Did not know that! Rebecca Ferguson is still my top choice. Hayley Atwell would be great as well. Although with Agent Carter it seems we got something similar already. I would not mind an older Lara.
