Heroes Over Europe Hands-On

English biplane versus Nazi battleship? It's no contest in this upcoming arcade flight game.

A lone squadron of Fairey Swordfish torpedo bombers roams the skies above the English channel, patrolling for Nazi destroyers and a battleship that have laid claim to these waters. Suddenly 10, 20, maybe 50 German fighter planes fill the sky, their jet engines easily outclassing the British biplanes that were considered outdated in 1939. But it's 1941, and you're outmanned, outgunned, and, well, you know the drill. But you and your wingmen have three things going for you: this is Heroes Over Europe, the upcoming arcade World War II flying game; a slow-motion bullet time mode; and rockets...unlimited rockets. The Germans don't stand a chance.

With slow-motion adrenaline mode, bogeys are easy prey. [Not actual gameplay.]
With slow-motion adrenaline mode, bogeys are easy prey. [Not actual gameplay.]

Let's also give credit where credit is due. The Swordfish were unsung heroes of WWII and crippled the mighty German battleship Bismarck in 1941, so repeating such a feat in Heroes Over Europe is not outside the realm of possibility. The sequel to 2005's Heroes of the Pacific, HOE puts you in the cockpit of authentic Allied fighter planes in a fight against the mighty German Luftwaffe. American, British, Canadian, and New Zealand aircraft comprise more than 40 total planes, including such classic hits as the Spitfire, Mustang, B-17 Flying Fortress, and the de Havilland Mosquito, a British fighter bomber made mostly of laminated plywood, affectionately known as the "timber terror."

Each aircraft is rated in top speed, agility, and weapon power, and after playing with both the Swordfish and Mosquito, the differences quickly become apparent. Dive-bombing in, say, a B-17 is a bad idea because it will take you much longer to pull out of your dive and you'll likely dive right into the English Channel. At least your controls are fairly simple. Moving left or right on the left stick controls your rudder, while moving up and down climbs and dives, respectively. The right stick controls rolls by moving left and right, while up and down will increase and decrease your speed. Fans of Heroes of the Pacific or, more recently, Blazing Angels, will feel right at home.

HOE focuses mostly on dogfighting, though bombing missions will be sprinkled in. At first, the game doesn't do much to separate itself from previous arcade sims. You simply maneuver behind enemy fighters and fire unlimited bullets in their path. Against bombers, you dive in from above so as to avoid their gunners. But Aussie developer Transmission Games added a nifty adrenaline meter to spice things up. As you have an enemy in your sights, a meter will slowly fill around your targeting reticle. You can then press a left shoulder button to slow down time and target individual sections of the aircraft. It's still difficult to pull off as the reticle is quite shaky, but taking out a wing or the fuselage makes for a one-hit kill, and then you're free to move on to your next target. Currently, weapons are limited to guns and bombs. Ironically, our Swordfish torpedo bomber was armed with unlimited rockets rather than actual torpedoes. Though fun to fire, we hope that actual torpedoes will be added. Fans of Battlestations: Midway will recall the thrill of dodging antiaircraft fire to successfully deliver our payload, and we hope torpedoes are added before the game's release.

HOE still has a ways to go in development, but the view from the sky was a treat. There was a noticeable amount of texture pop-in and some of the plane models were unfinished, but the landscapes and cities looked as if they were pulled from a 1940s version of Google Earth. One notable omission is cockpit view--try as we might, we could only select between two different follow cams. Let's hope that feature is added before release, because nothing puts you in the cockpit of a WWII plane like a, you know, cockpit view.

The single-player missions will begin with the German bombing of London and finish with the final bombing of Berlin. The game will also have you play as three different Allied pilots in an attempt to immerse you in the story. As for multiplayer, Atari is promising 16-player online action and four different modes, though we have yet to see it in action. When we do, you'll be the first to hear about it. You can fly the unfriendly skies for yourself when Heroes Over Europe is released in 2009.

Anyone notice how this is just MORE american propaganda? The cover of the game says it all. The letters are composed of one half the american flag the other flag germany's flag.

Why can't more flying games have controls like Ace Combat, with both sticks controlling the aircraft? This one stick for control and the other one for the throttle just pisses me off.

Can anyone tell me why the beginning of this article says that German jet fighters fill the sky in the year 1941? Germany's first jet fighter was the ME-262, and that didn't see action until 1944. This game is already flawed in my opinion.

I love these games. Blazing Angels isn't perfect but they are a lot of FUN to play, part 2 didn't have as much replay value as part 1 and I'd REALLY like it if they released an Ace Combat to the PC, can't wait for HAWX and really I have no time to learn the details of a SIM. These are like FPSs in 3D space, nothing wrong with FPSs like HL2, so I got no problem with these arcade flight sims, wish they made more of em!

Heroes over the pacific, Blazing angels I and II,...games unable to replace even the slightest feeling of a real flight, intrascendent games that must be stored in the forgetable files. Who the f.... want to fly old fighters in an arcade style game after beeing flying F15s and F22s for years in ace combat. Dont waste your time and bucks!... just wait for the next ace combat sequel.

IL2 Sturmovik is the Sim to beat. If it is not better IL2-1946 or any of the IL2 series it aint worth it.

Question for you flying nuts. I love flying sims and I love flying. But when it comes to joystick pounding dogfighting in WW2, my preference is to have an arcade based physics engine. My personal favorite is BF2 as it's simple to fly and you can be in a dogfight in seconds. I HATE having to try to remember 40+ keyboard commands to control a WW2 plane. For gaming purposes I prefer a simpler 1st person model. My question is, what other arcade style flying games can you recommend that might match up to or surpass the BF2 1st person flying experience? The few that I've tried have limited 3rd person views and force you down a specific game path, and I'm not looking for that. What do you recommend and why? I'm looking for more shooting and less sim. Thanks all!!!

wtf? some fools argueing over who did what in the 2nd world war, am british, but without america we or i as it were would be dead,or at best speaking german, with a adolf hitler self portrait over my fire place, we couldnt defeat the germans on our own, we were brave, and had sea between europe,so that helped, tanks go even slower under water i guess ;P (nazis had best enginered tanks and weapons the world had ever seen) america and brits combined did the job,and the most over looked concept of all, the german charge halted in russia, at stalingrad, not many like the russia's but they lost approx 22 milion lifes the total including germany was 30 million, and stoped the most powerful and feared army in world,so they played a huge part. also, so again combined efforts please children.

All you noobs that keep trying to compare this to IL-2 need to get a grip. This game isnt a SIM its an arcade shooter. The first on Heroes of the Pacific was fun for what it was, an arcade style shooter. But I'll probably wait on Battlestations Pacific, since its an arcade shooter that also allows you to control not just planes, but ships, pt boats, subs, all the way up to battleships.

I hope this game turns out great. I am looking forward to playing it. The English get upset when people say that America won the war because they were fighting it for almost six years before we bothered to go over and help. My grandmother was a nurse and soldier from London, and my grandfather was a pilot from America.

how would bullet time work in multiplayer, since everyone in the game would be slowed when one person activated it, or it would not be included but seeing as there is a resonably moderate focus on it, I assume it will be in multiplayer.

Once again another fantastically uneducated opinion, thanks Derek. " THe Germans would of Eventually wiped out Britian " Probably not since the Germans failed in 1940 and had to divert resources to fight on the Russian front. The Allies were already achieving victories in Africa before the US joined in. Yes the US lend lease helped Britain, I'm not one of those people who deny American soldiers made a great impact and sacrifice in WW2. In the Battle of Britain though? No, seriously American pilots did virtually nothing. Which planes did you send? Spitfires and Hurricanes? We have far more to thank the Poles and other nations for in that one. "You America Haters may not like Obama. I dont either" er..no, you;re very much mistaken. Most 'America Haters' feel that way because of the current idiot president. They're hoping that Obama is the man that can turn it around and make America a respected country once again.

Xenuri. I think you are partially wrong and partially right. THe Germans would of Eventually wiped out Britian even though Britian won the battle of Britian if it wasnt for America sending pilots planes and supplies. The big three were mostly fighting europe. America went and attacked Japanese with little to know help. so you can say America Single handedly defeated the japanese. With nukes. Oh ya and dutch, Britian didnt create america we went and kicked there buts for independence in the 1770's or 60's doesnt matter. You America Haters may not like Obama. I dont either. But if it werent for America we would probably be typing in German right now.

Eh, saying America won WW2 is not quite correect, England won the battle of Britain thus holding back the Nazis substantially, the red army marched into Berlin ending the war for Germany and yes America liberated France and supplied Britian with much needed resources but without any of the 'big 3' the war for the allies stood a high chance of being lost. Basiclly no one country single handily won WW2.

If it was not for the Americans the British would be no more. It was the Americans who bailed out the British with their industrial power to build ships and material for the British in the early part of the war! We fought BOTH major powers of the Axis...Japan AND Germany. England did not even have enough troops to fight against the Germans at the point of D-Day...they had to enlist the Canadians who they let get slaughtered in Diepe handle one of the beaches while they took the easiest beaches. Monty forced not one, not two, but THREE operations to take over Caen and if it were not for the American's he still would be there. No the Americans won the war...on both hemispheres.

While it looks great, unlimited bullets, rockets, no physics......come on this is just a WWII version of Ace combat 6. How about a little realism?? This will have nothing on IL-2 birds of prey. The IL-2 PC release was and still is the best PC WWII sim made ever and that was released in 2001. All the add ons were brilliant and I still play it today. At least IL-2 will give you an arcade version and a full simulation version, well as good as can be on a console. Heroes Over Europe will be a rental only for me.
