Hideo Kojima Says His New Game Is Now In "Crunch Time," Wonders How Much Longer He Can Stay Creative

"Every day feels like I’m racing against the clock."

Between Death Stranding 2: On The Beach, Physint, and OD, Hideo Kojima is a very busy developer and keenly aware that time is catching up to him. On X/Twitter, Kojima explained how he'd like to keep being creative for the rest of his life, but as he enters "crunch time" on one of his game projects, he's not sure how long that'll be. As Kojima explained, all the work associated with producing a video game combined with "an inevitable pile of other tasks" can take a mental and physical toll on a person.

Kojima also compared himself to veteran Hollywood director Ridley Scott, who continues to work on big-budget films like last year's Gladiator sequel. "Even now, at 87, Ridley Scott is still active. And back when he was past 60--my current stage in life--he created the masterpiece Gladiator," Kojima wrote.

This isn't the first time that Kojima has mused about how his physical health. Back in 2021, after he turned 58, Kojima promised to stay creative for as long as he is physically able to do so. "Although my body is failing me, my creativity is not waning yet. Until my brain loses its creative power, I'll continue to strive to create things. That's my instinct, and that's what I love to do," Kojima wrote at the time.

Currently, Kojima has a lot on his plate. His next game release is expected to be Death Stranding 2: On The Beach, he's partnered with Microsoft and Oscar-winning filmmaker Jordan Peele to work on the "risky" OD, and Physint was inspired by fans who kept asking him to make another Metal Gear game. On top of all that, there's the Death Stranding film adaptation that'll be co-produced by A24, a project that Kojima is hoping will stand out when compared to other video game movies.

I always enjoy and will enjoy all his games, well, except that one weird Metal Gear where you basically play around as a ninja all game long.

@chriss_m: Haters gonna hate, it's what they do. 🤷

The good thing is, most people realize these nobodies who just hate on everything aren't meant to be taken seriously.

The guy is so into himself. Maybe Kojima and Druckmann can get together and pull each others heads out of their own asses. Maybe stop trying to make an Oscar winning movie via a video game and just concentrate on making a game that has more gameplay than cutscenes - gameplay that isn't walking for hours. Might also want to go back to making one game at a time again.

@bdrtfm: I tapped out halfway through MGS4, but at this point I think he's proven there's a market for his brand of weird movie games, and I imagine that's what he's fans want from him.

@mogan: Metal Gear Solid 4 was like an endurance test. I spent half the PS3 generation just on the cutscenes XD.

Druckmann and Kojima are the worst Hollywood shills in the video games industry.

@ars1molinar: I don’t have anything against Druckman (or Kojima, really), but I felt like The Last of Us really didn’t need a sequel and that MGS’s ridiculous bull**** got to be too much after 3.

@mogan: There's definitely a balance to strike, I like games that offer a cinematic experience, but they have to be enjoyable. That, in my opinion, is where LOU2 lost people, despite appreciating the incredibly well crafted story (and the visual brilliance)- which I do believe it was, it was just difficult to enjoy it as a game. At the very least with replay value. As a film, it would do well with it's twists and turns and less of a built up relationship with the protagonists. If you're aware of a tuber called MojaveD he gave an interesting take on the end of the first game, and I better understood why the LOU2 went down the way it did after watching that. I couldn't get into DS from Kojima, it was just borderline ridiculous.

@bdrtfm: It’s always amusing to me when I see people call his games movies. No game has ever used the mechanics of being a game to tell a story as Kojima’s games have. There is no better example of a story being made better by the fact of being a game than Kojima’s.

So silly.

@chriss_m: You literally just said exactly what I said about him, just using more flattering words. There has to be a balance between a good story and great gameplay. Too much of one and not enough of the other does not make a game better. These are AAA games that sell for $90 or more, not TellTale games that sell for $15. At least Telltale doesn't make Delivery Sims and charge you $90 for it because: 10,000 cutscenes.

I'm going to be EXTREMELY honest. Kojima is very Eccentric and is frustratingly artsy fartsy. Like if you made a dictionary that was modern and up to date. Hideo Kojima would be right there as the first image even before the word.

I have to admit. It is super, and I'm gonna say it in bold so you understand better, SUPER refreshing having a dev who isn’t only worrying about annoying bland open-world games, or worse… SIGH*, another live-service video game, and or hero shooter.

Look I get it most of the average person (especially if you're from the US) usually wants to throw up half of their intestinal track, when it comes to more artsy individuals. But is it really worse than having some guy constantly shoving DLC content down your throat every 3 seconds, without barely room to get a gasp of air? Like by god we're getting smothered over here over this microtransaction BS. And, I have to admit. I do think his games are a pinch overrated even some of the Metal Gear Solid video games. But in this day and age, I rather pick this can of poison to huff than the other. In my humble opinion, it's better for a game to be too artsy, than be too commercially monetized and milked.

Also, let's be real we actually remember his video games. But with a lot of these heavily monetized games. I have to REALLY strain my brain to remember him.

Kojima is incredibly overrated and hasn't made a coherent game since metal gear solid 3.

I posted in another article how Kojima's plots were completely nonsensical, and someone had responded how it was a GOOD thing.

Konami had it right... people like Kojima can't reign it in enough to actually make a coherent product.

i never played death stranding because it seemed too weird and people called it a walking simulator

wish they would've finished PT

He’s the single most overrated person in all of gaming. I loved Metal Gear Solid 1-4. Then he made 5 and Death Stranding… The cult of Kojima just loves breathing the same air as him, though. He’s so far up his own ass. He believes his own myth and is so pretentious. When people think something he does is dumb, he says they don’t understand it. He gives Apple responses (when people complained about the iPhone 4 losing signal, and Apple said people are holding it wrong). “Creative” doesn’t automatically equal “good.”

Man, until this game comes out, how many thumbnails are going to show that "David Bowie in Labyrinth meets Heath Ledger's joker?"

Because that's something no one needs.

I never thought Hideo Kojima was creative for he only merges what he learns around, from primary school science class to whatever movie and tv series he watched. Is character names "Solid, Liquid and Solidus" creative to him? :DDD

Death Stranding proved he is nothing special as it's not even a game that actually has a story. He better stop trying to lie himself he is a video game developer and admit he just wanna be a director of interactive cinema programs as it's who he was initially at Konami. Directors don't necessarily care about writing a story and care to make the story telling decent, they just wanna control how movie is seen. However he is not even creative in being a director as all he can do is copy what other creative directors does. He has a knack for being a copyist but too bad he cannot be a copyist in this era. :DDD

He always lacked creativity but at least Metal Gear games are fun and functional as in easy to play so all he has to care about is making games functional and fun unlike how non-functional and boring Death Stranding is as it also proves he wasn't the person made Metal Gear games decent but he gotta have learnt how to develop a decent fun game from his decades in Metal Gear franchise but the issue is he doesn't wanna develop a decent fun game despite his experience lol. I have no idea who still believes he can develop video games at this point for Death Stranding should be a wake up sign that scream Hideo Kojima doesn't even wanna develop video games lol.

I don't think anyone cares for the "delivery simulator part 2" being in crunch or not .
