Hideo Kojima Turns 58, Vows To Stay Creative Even As His Body Fails Him

"Until my brain loses its creative power, I'll continue to strive to create things."

Gaming legend Hideo Kojima recently celebrated his 58th birthday, and to mark the occasion, the Metal Gear designer promised to stay creative for as long as he can.

In a tweet, Kojima acknowledged that his physical body is on the decline, but his creativity is as sharp as ever. "Although my body is failing me, my creativity is not waning yet. Until my brain loses its creative power, I'll continue to strive to create things. That's my instinct, and that's what I love to do. Thank you," he wrote.

Now Playing: Death Stranding Video Review

Kojima also reminded his Twitter followers that Brad Pitt is also 58 and Tom Cruise is 59. And although about 95% of Kojima Productions is working remotely, they still had an office birthday party for Kojima featuring a scrumptious-looking cake topped with strawberries and blueberries.

Kojima's latest project is Death Stranding, which sold 5 million copies and is now getting a director's cut edition in September. An "extended" gameplay trailer for the game on PlayStation 5 will air during Gamescom Opening Night Live this Wednesday, August 25. Separate from that, Kojima recently teased that a different video for the game is set to be released soon. This trailer could be released as soon as early September, Kojima himself estimates.

Kojima's next game after Death Stranding might be an exclusive for Xbox with cloud integration. According to a report, Kojima and Xbox have signed a letter of intent, but it might not be a done deal, and it's early days in any event.

Hideo is a top guy. SP is still more important to him as well as voice acting, integrating awesome cutscenes, even spending a shit load of cash for actors. He also lives simple (travels by train, public transport), this is a great guy, whether you like his games or not.

Wish him all the best in health and success!

I love(d) everything Hideo touched.

Until The Great Deception!

I didn't lose anything except a great Hideo game w/

DeathStranding.. But it was not only mediocre/avg in everyway,

The stuff w/ Norman Reedus doing weird faces in the mirror was just dumb.

~Who likes/cares that much about any celebrity that making a pop sound with ur finger in ur cheek is considered interesting? The Norman stuff was Cringe.

He shoulda went with another actor imo. Norman didn't impress me in DS.

**Why myself and others felt decieved about DeathStran= Becaus ethe way it was marketed & Hideo-cryptic style made it seem like the game was more then a boring walking sim.. And we thought the death STrand was gonna be something super amazing.. It wasn't...

*And i wont even get into the super lame combat and enemy Ai..

*My bottom line~ Still like & defend Kojima. but wont go in bLind ever again.

that bridge is burned...

Super hideo fans~ Are you pretending that Death Strand was on MetalGearSolid level?

Judging by the comments, some people need to stop playing video games and watching movies. It would suck to be that miserable.

I can’t stand him, death stranding was dull. Everything that comes out of his mouth is self obsessed garbage, that’s my personal view, I’m entitled to that

@rodoxthedark: Do better then, create the IP that he didn't for all to enjoy... no then you take your personal opinion and place it where the sun doesn't shine, in the back of your very narrow small mind. People that contribute nothing to the world they're born into and yet have so much negativity about other peoples creations.

@rodoxthedark: F A C T!!!

I used to be a Hideo fanboy but the product backed it..

Death Strand was intentionally vague becaus ehe knew 100% he was releasing a boring/lame iP...

The world is better then the story he told within it..

*I never ever woulda thought Hideo of all visionaries would have dull AWFUL enemy Ai & combat.. but my god was DeatHStrand combat stale..Why even have any combat if it's like that...

“Kojima also reminded his Twitter followers that Brad Pitt is also 58 and Tom Cruise is 59.”

Lol. That’s not exactly a close comparison. He mentions his body is failing him and then brings up those guys; both of whom are in really good shape, even aside from their age.

By creative you mean milking same series over and over like disney doing with starwars and marvel? Pffft no thanks. MGSV was 7/10 at best and your walking stimulator is boring

Headline read likes he's ill, come on now. Everyone ages. This shouldn't even be an article. Betty White is almost 100 freakin years old!

I felt myself aging as early as my mid-20s. I can't eat what I used to. My hair isn't as thick as it used to be. Skin isn't as elastic. Etc.

Haha, I see a bunch of people commenting how 58 isn't old, so how is his body failing him. While I agree 58 is not elderly, your body changes as you age. You can't always eat the same stuff in large volume anymore, can't drink as much sugary stuff(or alcohol), can't work for 3 sleepless nights in a row without feeling it(as some passionate Japanese developers are known to do). It is likely these are the things he is referring to with a bit of tongue in cheek, as he mentions Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise are the same age.

What a bizarre comment...maybe a cultural thing? Unless he has some underlying health issues he is not disclosing (nor should he), then 58 is firmly the middle age category, hardly "old" (especially in Japan). He talks as if he just turned 78, not 58.

@vladd1969: Well, it depends on what you mean. Even though it's not elderly as he clearly jokes about Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise, you have to remember some of these Japanese creators work extremely long hours. The guy who is over Super Smash Bros talked about it, as he got older, pulling 2 to 3 day work benders with no sleep almost killed him. He just couldn't do that like he used to when he was in his 20's or 30's, so I have a feeling that's probably more of what Kojima is referring to. Also, other bodily functions begin to change as well haha.

wtf is he ill or something? If not, this is pretty hilarious. Maybe "old" has a different benchmark in Japan but, if your career is basically over at 58 because you're considered too feeble, seems like a pretty shitty place to work and live. I sure hope people are stopping to help him cross the street...

@jeremyalexander: Unless he's sick and there's something he isn't saying. Chadwick Boseman was Black Panther while he was dying and no one knew. There's all sorts a way a body can fail that can be kept quiet until very late in the process.

@Smosh150: My father looked youngish until he really got into his late 60's. He colored his hair so there was really no signs of major aging. If I told you he was in his 40's when he was in his 60's you'd probably believe it. Same with my mother. Some people just age differently.
