Hideo Kojima's Next Game Is A Partnership With Xbox Game Studios

Rumors abound, but Kojima gave no details about the upcoming title, except that it's the game he's "always wanted to make."

Hideo Kojima and Xbox are working together on a new game powered by the cloud, but the director isn't ready to actually show it to us. In fact, we don't even really know what it is, though allegedly leaked information on the project may offer a little bit of insight. Just don't expect it to be Metal Gear Solid or Death Stranding on Xbox.

Xbox CEO Phil Spencer made the announcement during the Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase, playing a short video in which Kojima mentioned a partnership between his studio, Kojima Productions, with Xbox Game Studios to make what he called an entirely new game, and one he's always wanted to make. Kojima said that Xbox's cloud gaming technology will make the title possible--but said almost nothing else about it. He concluded his announcement by stating that "it may take some time, but I hope to bring you some exciting news in the future."

Now Playing: Xbox Games Studios + Kojima Productions Announcement | Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase 2022

Reports of a leak ahead of the Xbox/Bethesda showcase suggested that a Kojima announcement was coming, although it included a lot more details than Kojima and Microsoft actually revealed. According to the leak, the game is called Overdose, and is a horror game taking after Kojima's canceled Silent Hills, originally teased with the short playable ad P.T. Kojima has previously talked about wanting to make a horror game, so that idea still matches up with what he said during the showcase announcement.

Appearing in the Xbox Showcase Extended, Spencer made it clear that Kojima's new project is indeed a "game" and not an "experience" of some kind.

"I want to be clear: I know we said 'experience.' But he's building a video game," Spencer said.

The leak also stated that Overdose stars Margaret Qualley, who previously played Mama in Death Stranding alongside an increasingly large number of film roles. It appears to be just one of multiple games Hideo Kojima has in the works, with Norman Reedus recently saying that Death Stranding 2 is in development. No other confirmation has been made, though Kojima did joke about the confirmation on Twitter.

@xnshd: This has nothing to do with console vs console. I don't care about consoles like that anyway. This has to do with Xbox in Japan and the crickets that you can hear chirping when its mentioned there. That's how you know that Microsoft in particular payed a lot for this to happen.

@lonesamurai00: Actually, the Xbox S is selling pretty darn well over there. Turns out appealing to the Japanese' preference for digital/handheld accessibility is a winning strategy over there. Who knew?

@Barighm: Pretty darn well... it is selling about as well as it did 7th and 8th gen, which is not a large %. See here https://www.statista.com/statistics/1060154/japan-unit-sales-handheld-home-video-game-consoles/ at 0.1 and 0.08 the xbox 9th gen series shows it has fans, but not strong enough to change the landscape.

@jenovaschilld: Semantics. I don't recall saying it's changing the landscape, just that it is selling better than lonesamurai implied.

@Barighm: Its still not selling that great over there, and if it is doing a bit better than in the past you need only look to the very real ramifications of today's world. Any number of statistics could be the driving force for a small bump of sales in Japan. It's simply due to the implications of the world today.

@Barighm: I dig that. A friend of mine in Kyoto where I used to reside told me just last month that the PS5 is very much wanted by everyone who still plays games at home, but that they are very hard to nail down. He and friends go to a drinking bar with a back room and a PS5 to play.

The Xbox Series consoles are nowhere near as popular or as wanted as Switch and PS5 over there. At this point they are just doing what many are doing - taking what they can find.

@xnshd: That's because the PS5 is next to impossible to find all around the world. From what I hear the availability of Xbox is a bit better. I don't know if it's slightly better or a lot better, but it is one of them from the articles that I have read, and word of mouth.

@lonesamurai00: ps5 in japan isnt selling well regardless of stock its not doing anywhere near aswell in terms of sales at this point as apposed to previous consoles whereas even with the chip shortage the PS5 is selling ahead of the PS4 in other markets.

@xnshd: People are having to decide whether they want food or gas to get to work today, and it is worse in other countries. When the PS4 was in stores this wasn't the choice that most people had to make. The PS5, Xbox are hardly on anyone's radar but the Switch is doing great. Probably because it truly provides an experience that the other two do not.

The PC is an extremely popular platform for gaming. It offers things that no other platform does, all games are pretty much on the platform, and many people already have a suitable laptop. Even the new handheld (Steam Deck) does things that the Switch can't. I think today people are being much more picky with their money.

@lonesamurai00: yes thats today the consoles have been almost out for 2 years so whats the excuse for the ps5 not doing great in japan for lets say a year and thats being generous before the whole price of living crisis hit.

playstation switch and yes xbox are all on peoples radar to try and blindly say that xbox isn't relevant and that no one wants one is such a sweeping statement without any actual facts to back it up. when if you actually look at microsofts gaming division financials it very much indicates that people do want an xbox and that its doing very well. just like playstation and nintendo are doing well also.

@xnshd: All of them have relevance but when people are trying to decide if they want to save money for other more important things, sometimes these other things like the consoles may have to take a back seat. So okay let's say that they are on their radar fine. The consoles being on their radar doesn't mean that they will get it, or actually make the purchase. The only console that selling well is the Switch. There are articles that say this all over.

As far as Xbox goes it never has sold great in Japan and that was my whole point. Heck many of the Japanese games that they enjoy don't even make it to the Xbox, mostly just PC and Playstation and sometimes Switch. You want proof of that, go look at some recent game announcements, then go back for the past 5-6 years and see the rest.

@lonesamurai00: 20 million and 15 million sales in under 2 years is very good. like i said PS5 is selling ahead of the PS4 at the current point in its lifespan. thinking the only console that is selling well is the switch is just nonsense.

in japan the only console selling well is the switch but thats not a chip issue thing or a cost of living crisis thing thats just simply most japanese people prefer handheld/mobile gaming hence why PS5 is selling the worst of all sonys home consoles in japan for this stage in the consoles life span. as you said xbox never does well in japan so no surprise there, however they have in terms of past results in japan been doing okay with the series x and s.

@xnshd: That's great for Sony I guess. I didn't say that the console isn't selling well. I said that the Switch is selling very well, in fact the best in Japan, and that the Xbox historically never does there.

I know that Japanese people prefer handheld systems and games on cellphones. I said was that there are people who want the Playstation, but they can be difficult to find in Japan, as they are everywhere.

@lonesamurai00: It's not so much Xbox availability is better so much as the Series S is pretty well stocked since it's using older chips.

Imagine if death stranding 2 comes on Xbox, but the definitive edition of death stranding 1 stays on PlayStation, and YouTube becomes the judge on content.

@Crazy_sahara: I imagine it won't make much of a difference because all the hype will be moot and the second game won't sell nearly as well as the first.

Yeah this isn't news. Anyway as long as the actual important game, Death Stranding 2, is still coming to Playstation that's all that matters.

@bryanweary: Its definitely not a game for everyone, but I loved it. I got so addicted to building roads and doing every single delivery with zero damage, and just driving around on my newly built roads was pretty serene to me. Also I really loved the characters. Especially Fragile and Higgs.

@mooglestar: The Director's Cut is absolutely the way to go. Some brand new story beats, a new area, you're given more viable combat options much earlier on, and the Buddy bot will become your new best friend.

Throw in the expected technical/graphical upgrades and it's the best place for first time players to start, and definitely worth another go for people who already enjoy the game.

Let me guess. He’s going to vaguely tease it for about 5 years with these stupid trailers that reveal next to nothing. Right?

This dude is so full of himself it’s not even funny. After MGS V I completely lost all interest in this hack.

@duggd1ggler: Game journalists are the ones that keep asking him and reporting on this, and Microsoft is the one that announced this. I also can't blame a guy for trying to hype up/market his own game by giving teasers here and there. It's his job to sell as many copies as possible.

@Ultima_Dragoon: yea plus since he is a game creator he is working on games. his options are to not say anything in 3 years or whatever it takes, or to blabber all the facts and ruin surprises, or do what he does and give various hints and news.

i dont get the complaints. he is doing what everyone who is in any kind of expert work is doing and talking about his work. if anything the industry needs more guys like him who arent tied under strict nda and their name in danger of being removed from the credits in case they do anything that doesnt fit the plastic marketing campaign

Not a fan of Kojima's games but I never thought he'd make an Xbox exclusive. That was pretty much the only surprise during the show. Odd that they would announce that he's collaborating with them without a single shred of details as to W5 other than who.

So much for all those rumours about Kojima partnering with Sony going forward. Don't really care. Never really liked his games.
