Hitman: Absolution dev says game limited by current gen - Report

The game's art director Roberto Marchesi says Xbox 360 and Sony PS3 "limited" the upcoming stealth action game.

Hitman: Absolution art director Roberto Marchesi has revealed that development of the upcoming stealth action title was limited by current-generation hardware.

No Caption Provided

Speaking to Trusted Reviews, Marchesi admitted that there were things he would have liked to see implemented in the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of Hitman: Absolution that weren't possible due to current hardware, and that the game "does start to show the limitations of the current technology."

However, Marchesi added that working with current-generation hardware provides developers with a welcome challenge.

"The first games that will come out for the next generation of consoles will probably be just like an up-scaled version of everything," he said. "All the textures will be ramped up twice, the resolution, everything…that’s really just a brute-force approach to making great-looking games, and, in a way, it's much more of a challenge doing it with this current generation."

Hitman: Absolution is scheduled for a global release on November 20, 2012, on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC.

I've been seeing a lot of this lately. And as a primarily Console gamer... I agree. I Play consoles for one simple reason. I get the hottest games, and I can JUST PUSH PLAY to play them (PC requires upgrades, sometimes troubleshooting and even tweaks... it's too much, I just wanna play) PC is getting farther and farther ahead though, and playing these hot new games at WAY Better graphics. Console life spans need to go back to being just a few years. It's been 7 years since we have had an upgrade. If you didn't upgrade your PC for 7 years you'd be SOL.

I want my X720, and my PS4. (Wii U? yeah... once it's hacked maybe)

Hopefully Squeenix will release a free hi-res texture pack for the PC version like they did with Sleeping Dogs.

@catsimboy I think the ability to do this with PC games is awesome. However, the need for it concerns me that Console's need to be upgraded at the same speed PC games are.

Pre-ordered it for my upcoming PC rig. Hope it has SSAO and all the fancy bells&whistles that make those low-poly console-friendly models and low-res textures look a bit more realistic.

@Orgil220 @Volgin That would be bad for the industry and bad for the economy. So I'll respectfully disagree with you, Orgil220. Video Game sales are slumping because the generation is stagnant.

@Benny_a @Volgin agree with you 100%, i want to see a game that pushes pc limits as much as you do, I'm sorry if i was bit off the topic, but ive seen what hitman have to offer, their graphic is nothing to scoffed at, nowhere near at those games mentioned above, yet they blame current consoles, they at least could have tried little bit harder

@Volgin @Orgil220 You hit the hammer on the head with Halo 4. The game looks stunning but its based much more on its artistic style than graphical power, there are lots of low res textures that would have been much clearer on PC or next gen system. Its like Skyward Sword, looks great but the Wii hardware held it back, just Skyward Sword was help back a LOT more than Halo 4.

This only applies to consoles. No excuses for the PC version. Though with modern trends, it's probably a console port anyway.

Those complaining, have any of you actually got hands on with the game? Have you played the Sniper Challenge? The game looks amazing and plays amazing on both console and PC.

The devs have done a really good job with this game and they feel they could have done an even better job if they didn't have hardware limitations.

It's good they still decided to make it for this gen, I can imagine the first few games on the next gen will be out of whack until the developers get the hang of the new technology.

@mav_destroyer I think the game looks great as well, above and beyond Blood Money for sure. However, I think there is some truth here. It's been 7 years since we had a console upgrade. If you did that to your PC, and didn't upgrade for 7 years... you wouldn't be able to play anything new.

I'm glad they made Absolution for this gen as well, but this is a clear cut case of the hardware holding back the creative/development possibilities.

A big reason I think this is being pushed for release now as well is that Square Enix wants to use a lot of Eidos big franchises for a single game, and see what sell before they... trim the fat, if you will.

The word "Excuse" is mentioned about 18 times on this page.

Maybe the proper word is not "excuse" but "reason"?

Example 1:

Reasons why Hitman was limited...;

Excuses why Hitman was limited...

The word "excuse" has a negative connotation being directed at Roberto Marchesi

Example 2:The dev/game artist making legitimate complaints about limitations of current gen technology;

The dev/game artist whining/bitching about limitations of current gen technology

The words 'whining/bitching" have a negative connotation and serve as a preamble to dismiss what the guy is saying out of hand.

Talk about common sheep-like psychological defense and taking things personally.

bleeeeeeaaaaaat....

Wow, the excuses beginning before the game even hits market does not bode well for Hitman: Absolution. No doubt posters below me have pointed out numerous great games not hindered by current technology so I won't bother. The point remains that people have been making awesome games without better technology still to this day. As the old adage goes: "It is a poor carpenter who blames his tools"

@Serpentes420 Right, but newer technologies exist now that the developers want to use but they can't because of the older console's limitations. The problem is they're developing this game for PC and consoles. They basically have to make 2 versions of the game now and it's becoming a problem.

@egger7577 They can make it PC exclusive then. Really it doesn't matter for me personally as it could be the best Hitman game ever and I still won't play it, the franchise does nothing for me. I just think that when statements like Mr. Marchesi made about a game (or any product) come out, before release that most likely that game will be bad. And in the game world we have seen indie developers make great games with 8 or 16 bit graphics. We have experienced developers push current technology to make visually stunning games. This sounds to me a re-made rationale for why a game soon to release will have a metacritic score in the 60s. Hopefully for the fans of this series I'm wrong.

This is the longest console generation in history and the first one where so many gamers are clinging to their outdated technology, defending it for personal attachment reasons and not wanting next generation consoles already. For any console gamer who started way back or even in the 80s, this type of defending of current consoles is mind-blowing and frankly backwards to how gamers used to be - they actually wanted new consoles for the latest technology. Put it this way, if previous generations of gamers thought like you, guess what, right now we'd still be only on PS1 or maybe PS2! That's right, if every console generation lasted 7-8 years like PS3-360, instead of ~5 years like in the past, we'd have even crappier outdated consoles. Instead, current generation gamers want PS3/360 to last even longer, to what 2015, 2020, 2025?

Good thing other developers are telling publicly that current consoles are outdated and we need new tech. The man is telling the truth and everyone is attacking him. This is no different than if people defended PS2 and said PS3 wasn't necessary to advance the future of console gaming. Bring on next generation consoles ASAP!

@Serpentes420 And actually point #6. Since it takes 1-2 years at minimum for developers to start ramping up games on new consoles, we need new console to release already because there will still be a 1-2 year waiting period if you want before the library gets get enough to buy them. No one is forcing you to buy the new console on day 1, or even in the first year. However, the longer we wait, the longer it will take before the library is built and price drops occur. And Point #7. The most new IPs come during new console generations. Unless all you want to play are annual releases of Halo, Assassin's Creed and COD, new consoles will bring new IP with them, which a lot of gamers are looking forward to.

@Serpentes420 1. Lame excuse. You think you are different than us console gamers who played through the 70s, 80s and 90s? We saved up our $ and wanted new technology, instead of clinging to outdated tech.2. Since technology always evolves, if you want advanced tech, it will still be $500. If you wait, your state of the art technology gets dated. That means, the earlier next generation consoles launch at $400-500 (if they do, because it might be $299-399), then the faster they will drop in price. The longer they are NOT released, the longer you'll be waiting for price drops. It's common sense.3. No one is telling you to quit gaming on PS3, 360, Wii. Refer to point #2 -- you can still keep gaming on your current consoles, while waiting for the inevitable price drops should next generation consoles be expensive to start.

4. It's been 6-7 years to save up for next generation consoles. Since in the past consoles lasted 5 years, you should have known to save up for the next consoles. Don't blame the industry's constant advancement of technology if you didn't take the time to save up $ for next gen consoles. 5. Current consoles are still going for $270-300 with hard drives that have ample space. That's not exactly cheap. Many many gamers would gladly pay $400 for a next generation PS4 than $269 for a 6 year old PS3. If anything, the current generation consoles are overpriced by now.

It was good enough 2 years ago to be declared "Game of the Show" at E3 by GS.

Amazing that it isn't finished and "limited by current gen" but still got that award so long ago...

I'm with you there, Roberto Marchesi, however, you DO know there is such a thing as PC that would not limit your ideas, right?

I played the Sniper Challenge and while the engine is said to support hundreds of AI without FPS hinderance, I've noticed a LOT of identical NPC literally standing next to each other. So what's the point of having hundreds of AI NPCs in a mission if the immersion breaks as soon as you see dozens and dozens of twin NPC?.

I'm calling bullshit on all these developers who are like "wahh we can't make a good game cuz of x." There's no excuse, Deus Ex from 2000 was more complex gameplay wise than pretty much every game in its category these days, and it was made in freakin 2000.

@zfizz4shizz That's actually a strawman. If a game is good piracy helps it, it's free advertising. Half Life 2 is one of the most pirated and most successful games in history and it was leaked before release. Without console gamers, games would still actually be good. Now it's all one big dumbed down shell of clone sequels.
