Hitman: Absolution dev says game limited by current gen - Report

The game's art director Roberto Marchesi says Xbox 360 and Sony PS3 "limited" the upcoming stealth action game.

Hitman: Absolution art director Roberto Marchesi has revealed that development of the upcoming stealth action title was limited by current-generation hardware.

No Caption Provided

Speaking to Trusted Reviews, Marchesi admitted that there were things he would have liked to see implemented in the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of Hitman: Absolution that weren't possible due to current hardware, and that the game "does start to show the limitations of the current technology."

However, Marchesi added that working with current-generation hardware provides developers with a welcome challenge.

"The first games that will come out for the next generation of consoles will probably be just like an up-scaled version of everything," he said. "All the textures will be ramped up twice, the resolution, everything…that’s really just a brute-force approach to making great-looking games, and, in a way, it's much more of a challenge doing it with this current generation."

Hitman: Absolution is scheduled for a global release on November 20, 2012, on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC.

Roberto Marchesi is absolutely correct.

In fact, every console game in existence has been limited by what the then-current generation consoles could do.

Example: Instead of essentially developing the original Metal Gear for the NES and MS-DOS, I'm sure Hideo Kojima would have preferred developing it for a PS3 (or PS4) console. His ideas were unfortunately limited by late '80s technology.

It's also an economic issue, because next-gen consoles are primarily only released when the costs associated with materials, production and promotion can successfully be recovered through consumers. The consoles may be very technologically advanced, but being too expensive means that fewer people buy them -- and as a result, game developers who develop games for those consoles sell fewer games.

The best developers know how to make great games in spite of all this.

This really isn't (or shouldn't) be shocking news to anyone.

Of course it's limited, the "current" gen is absolutely pathetic at this point in time.

@cshourihan I'm both a pc and console player and i welcome the next gen of consoles but the "graphics whores" and PC elitists are even more pathetic, i don't give a shit about graphics as long as the game is fun and every true gamer knows that.

@cshourihan Don't tell that to people who think PS3 has "years of life" left in it. Ya, it does have years of life left just like you could still be making PS1 game now if you wanted to. However, in terms of actual graphics capability, both the 360 and PS3 have been maxed out years ago. It's just that a lot of console gamers don't notice that all the games run at drastically reduced settings.PS3

COD: Black Ops 2 = 960x540 on the PlayStation 3 (no MSAA anti-aliasing)Uncharted 3 = 896x504 Killzone 3 = 640x716Grand Theft Auto IV = 1152x640Everyone in the industry knows PS3 and 360 are on their last legs and developers are just "tricking" console gamers into believe they have legs. What is happening is they are reducing resolution! Uncharted 1 & 2 ran at 1280x720. Killzone 2 at 1280x720, etc.The current generation is hopelessly outdated.

@Serpentes420 @cshourihan No, I just understand the importance of how advanced technology is very important for gaming. If people thought like you, we'd still be gaming on PS1 or N64. Your argument is current generation technology does not limit games. This is the longest current generation of consoles, of course it's limiting games already and has been for a long-time. I want to see all the PS3/360 defenders when PS4/Xbox 720 come out. I am guessing you all will be playing your PS3 for another 10 years because what's the point of next generation AI, physics effects, even larger environments, more realistic cities?Funny, just days ago people are going wild over GTA V graphics and how it's pushing current consoles. GTA V would never have happened if PS1 didn't get replaced by PS2 and that didn't get replaced by PS3. I get that because I've been gaming for a long-time. The current generation of young gamers aren't seeing the connection between technology and games.

@zfizz4shizz I buy all my games and they're PC versions. All my console friends have them pirated, in best case they buy 1-2 games a year. Piracy in consoles is huge too.

I just remembered something. I was playing Hitman Sniper Challenge and noticed that you have to hold a key/button to aim. Now isn't it lame they didn't have the option to choose between hold and toggle like 90% of games do? It might sound as a minor thing to most of you but it's not something hardware demanding nor difficult to programme, it's just lazy.

I like how the article tells us how limited he was by the current gen, but doesn't tell us how.

Also, the PC exists. This sounds like a scapegoat for a poor game.

@Richardthe3rd People are taking his comments WAY out of context.

Just look at the PC version Hitman Absolution. What you see are DX11 features like High Dynamic Range Ambient Occlusion and Global Illumination. Something consoles cannot do. There is your specific answer how the consoles were limiting Art Direction. He isn't saying consoles limited gameplay. He is just saying how crap the current console hardware is now.

@BestJinjo @Richardthe3rd I'm more worried about the gameplay itself than the graphics for the PC version. Screenshots look good but I saw Conan O'Brien playing this on his show the other night, he is terrible at games and he actually started doing well. That is a bad sign for people that played the original series, as it is likely very dumbed down.

So... if the game comes out flat, with poor reviews, then he can fall back on this and blame console limitations?

@emperiox At least people who are cheering for the Wii U are not saying Wii is good enough and that developers are making excuses that Wii is holding them back. I keep seeing 360 and PS3 owners defending their outdated tech though and crying that they want PS3 to last to 2015 because they can't afford PS4.

We need new ways of gameplay not endless cinematic cutscenes that makes you sleep.Games are being more watchable than playable. People are just tired of receiveing a batch of shooters the entire year.... shoot shoot shoot shoot!!!!!!!!! Please Fumito Ueda finish Last Guardian at once =(.

So it is limited in graphics ... nowhere it is question of making things more complexe, a new gameplay, making things bigger, more epic ... no ... "our game is shit because we don't have more graphics power" ... yeah dummy because it is the only thing that could make you game better ...

And of course a new generation of consol will only see better graphics, nothing else will be better. It is starting to sound like shit ... Just better graphics with everything dumbed down, FPS everywhere and gamer calling themselves "hardcore" ... shit this is stupid as ****.

No one is creative now or what ? No one can play anything unless it as the best graphics possible that will be outdated in a month ? Damn ...

@Coco_pierrot You make a good point. However, when COD Black Ops 2 sets gaming sales records, what kind of innovation do you expect from the industry? They are catering to the masses who want sequels and twitchy shooters with a new skin from 2007. Hitman games are actually pretty damn good.

@Coco_pierrot I was hoping to read about their epic ideas for ai interactions and other new ideas they had that couldn't be in the game... Just as dissapointed to see the ol' MOAR GRAPHICS arguements being pulled out their arses again.

If they want that, why not put it on the PC version... Pleanty of people bitch about the graphics not being superior on the PC, not the consoles fault if they just can't be arsed.

They are clearly stating they feel limited by the graphics power of current gen consol ... not because they wanted the game to be bigger, trying to do something that take too much space or they wanted to do something that no current technology could reproduce.

It is just the same old tired argument that they want fucking new graphics because clearly they think it is the only thing that could make their game "better"

I understand where they come with the "limited by the technology phrase".

But seriously now: Gears of War 3, Assassin's Creed III, Crysis 2, Battlefield 3, The Witcher 2, Skyrim, Uncharted 3, Halo 4, Arkham City.

How come these games work on consoles just fine and they only have to make small sacrifices?

See PC vs Console differences in Crysis 2 (Maldo Mod, DirectX11), The Witcher 2 (totally different versions) and Skyrim (a modded one).

Also, see how the first games from a franchise compare to its last entry in this generation: Unchared 1 vs 3, Gears 1 vs 3, Halo 3 vs 4, Crysis 1 vs 2, AC 1 vs 3, Oblivion vs Skyrim.

If you want to improve, just adjust, rethink and it's doable..

@Cryio TBH they evolved in quality, but nothing truly revolutionary. Compare GTA 3 with RDR, that's what the developers are talking about.

And that "rethink it's doable" is a total crap. You can't have fluids physics on water and cloth physics on every character.

BF3 (haven't seen those others play on consoles) looks like a completely different product on consoles compared to PC. sure, the gameplay is there, but this article is from an artists perspective. consoles don't allow you to do high-res textures, and games usually run on sub-HD resolution, making them look horrible on a larger TV.

Perhaps they shouldn't have waited so long between games.

Even if they had waited and made this a launch title for next gen, they would still have made it for the current gen, and presumably the same excuses?

Excuses excuses...the Reality is nothing is Handcuffing them from creating good content. If new consoles were out some developers would probably complain about the learning curve of the new hardware(which would be valid normally speaking),but too many people are using things as an excuse to sort of make status quo games when really in all honesty it makes them look bad that this console cycle was so long and they mastered working on the hardware, so why does 1 particular game end up sucking or have a ton of flaws. Can they guarantee there will be less of these kinds of problems with the new generation of consoles? I dont think so not with the increased production cost and increased work-overhead tied to a newer more powerful hardware..If anything its gonna be more of those sorts of problems. Im kind of tired of hearing the whining in the media about certain things from game developers...

the problem is, people are so used to good graphics, that sacrificing them to make a more interesting gameplay experience would be highly risky, Rockstar's RDR managed to balance this, because the wild west isn't as crammed with stuff.

And the visuals were quite decent.

people tend to glance over a game if it doesn't look good.

a good looking FPS is a safe bet, more time spend on visuals since the mechanic is always the same.

There's nothing wrong with the current generation consoles. What makes a great game is great story telling, an excellent soundtrack and character development! Sure next gen consoles will provide better graphics, textures etc, and thats all good, but there's too much zombie like focus on this (a bit like every game should have a multiplayer!), and it's simply laziness. It's all about being to immersing the player in your world and it's acheiveable now...if, as a developer, you can be bothered to acheive it!

yeah games are not about graphics, but it would be nice if they were 1080p with nice post processing effects, since everyone has a FullHD TV.

current gen console games just looks so ugly already compared to PC versions.

@PSYCHOV3N0M Is that so? Yes it has to look great, yes graphics are a main element in gaming, yes I do care about visuals, but it's not all I care about.

I want to hear how you'll be able to drive through any wall, how buildings will collapse Red Faction style, how explosions will leave craters in the ground that you could walk into as examples of next gen prowess.

I already know it will look great, after all, any visual upgrade from current is amazing because games are looking sharp already.
