Hitman for Xbox One, PS4 has sandbox levels, no checkpoints

IO Interactive confirms you'll play as "globetrotting Agent 47 at the prime of his career" in new game; Contracts Mode returns.

As part of an open letter released to fans today, Hitman series creator IO Interactive shared a host of new details about its new AAA Hitman game currently in development for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. In this new and untitled game, you'll play as a "globetrotting Agent 47 at the prime of his career." Supporting Agent 47 will be his longtime partner Diana Burnwood and the entire International Contract Agency (ICA).

No Caption Provided

According to IO Interactive, the new Hitman game will retain the "core" of the series, that is, being able to use a "wide range" of tools to take out a diverse group of targets at a global scale. The game will run on a form of the Glacier 2 engine, which powered 2012's Hitman: Absolution.

"We're packing in an extreme level of detail on the largest levels we have ever built for a Hitman game. We've adopted an open, non-linear level design approach to the game, ensuring the game will play out across huge, checkpoint-free, sandbox levels," the developer said. "Our aim is to create living, breathing, and believable levels which will allow gamers to play around with the AI to create those unique moments every fan of the Hitman franchise loves."

Contracts Mode, a mission-editor feature that allows players to create murder scenarios, will also return for the new Hitman game. Players will be able to create and build these challenges and then share them with the world through the Internet.

"You will also be glad to hear that we have removed 47's magic pockets," the developer said. "We believe that's all we need to say about that subject."

More details about the new Hitman game will be shared in the coming months, IO said.

In addition to the new Hitman game for Xbox One, PS4, and PC, Square Enix Montreal is working on Hitman-inspired mobile games for tablets and smartphones. A Hitman movie called Agent 47 is also in the works with Homeland's Rupert Friend playing the lead role, replacing Paul Walker, who died in a car crash last year.

Nice job ignoring the existence of the pc in the title. You know, the platform the series was born from?

I thought Absolution was good, but Blood Money is the high point of the series (though Hitman 2 is a sentimental favorite since it introduced me to the franchise). As long as there is a good story, solid character development, and entertaining missions I'll be fine with it. I'm not sure what open, "sandbox" levels mean in a game that is objective-driven by design (that is, your recurring purpose is to go in, kill someone, then exit). Anyhow, looking forward to it. I hope that they might possibly squeeze it onto the PS3 or X360.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Character development and good story doesn't belong in a Hitman game. The games are best when you're placed in a huge open levels with one or more targets and NOTHING MORE. That's why people loved Blood Money so much!

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> If it were up to people like you we would still be playing Pac-Man. The problem with Absolution wasn't that it had a good story, it was the gameplay: the linear levels, the one-man-army arsenal of weapons, the deviation from the stealth and strategy of past Hitman games. I actually enjoyed Absolution's story. Blood Money had a good story, too and that game was sick. The story never got in the way of the gameplay, and that's really the only connection that you seem to have a hard time making. Look at Metal Gear Solid, great story, never gets in the way of the gameplay itself.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Metal Gear Solid's story never gets in the way of game play? That's your example? That game is 8-10 hours if you're slow, and 5 of those hours are cut scenes. That's not an exaggeration, mind you. There's 78 of them and they are literally 5 hours worth of the 10 hour game. Add codec conversations and you're talking MAYBE 1-2 hours of game play tops if you really milk the boss fights or reeeeeeaaally like dicking around with the Nikita. Save for maybe Hard Rain, I'm not sure you could have come up with a worse example...

That said, I agree with ALMOST everything else you said. Absolution's story was walrus shit, IMO, but to each their own.

I think any old skool Hitman fan would agree Contracts was the best in the series. Not that 2 or blood money weren't good, codename 47 was contracts in essence but not as good. Absolution was fun but not a hitman game and more open world seems interesting but I need to see gameplay before a make a prognosis.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I think Blood Money was better than Contracts. In Blood Money you could hide bodies, although, surprisingly they removed 47's precision aiming for some reason, single button access to the map and the levels were just a lot better. After The Meat King Party (one of the best Hitman levels, IMO), the game got dark and gloomy and reminded me of the preceding Silent Assassin, it was always raining. The story wasn't great either, Agent 47 just kept blacking in and out in an empty motel, as I advanced in the game I forgot he got shot. I forgot what the ending was. You couldn't hide bodies. All in all, it was a good game but no comparison to Blood Money. Nope.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >>I think my favorite part of Contracts is the fact that it's a direct tie-in to the Opera House mission in Blood Money, plus a recap of the first game on top of it all.

I honestly can't really disagree because BM was a fantastic game. But I loved Contracts for the same reason you didn't like it in witch was the darkness of the story and the at times disturbing missions and characters (and of course the rain lol). I personally think 2 was the hardest in terms of PRO SA's and took a lot of retrys to remember the AI route pattens and the best and most efficient ways to complete the objectives. I'm hoping this new installment will right the wrongs that hindered the previous games in the series and keep and enhance the aspects that make the franchise and 47 what it is today. Albeit I'm much more pessimistic.

I hope they do another Pre-order DLC like the "Sniper Challenge" for Hitman: Absolution. That was by far the best level/mission in the whole game. Absolution was decent but lack a distance approach like the Sniper Challenge. I'm looking forward to this and like the change in direction. I hope with the next-gen they can improve better AI and better randomized characters. It was a game breaker but when you see a group of 6 people and 3 are the exact same does give the real vibe. Anyways great news!

Contracts mode AGAIN? **** that. There is going to be hell to pay if they only let you choose your weapons in that shitty mode instead of campaign like Blood Money. I never touched Contracts mode honestly.

The article was good until I read about Square Enix. You didn't have to remind us that Hitman is in the hands of Sqaure Enix. You just ruined it for me. Damn.

Magic pockets are good, but not as good as Snake's magic reload in MGS3. That was awesome.

@grove12345 It should read like this: Hitman for X1 and PS4 and has sandbox levels with no checkpoints.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Perhaps, but you should check your own. There are no capitalizations; using 'or' at the start of a sentence, and one sentence doesn't deserve separation into another paragraph. I'm just saying, because I find it awkward that you're saying that, and yet you didn't type what you typed all that well. It's ironic and hypocritical.

Enjoyed Absolution but it had very little replay value, even with contracts mode. A level editor would be a better option. Just fix the disguise system, don't bother with an overarching story, tighten up the controls and give us multiple ways to take out a target in interesting, varied locales. Simple.

They should have taken the Blood Money route to begin with. Makes you wonder why they ever took the direction they did with Absolution in the first place.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I may be wrong but I think Absolution was an experiment for them, being that HD graphics was never their fortay. Studios do that all the time, they have experiment projects then they sell them for revenue. Either that or they just lost their minds.

I would like to see train stations and airports as a way to link different cities together. So he can go from NY to London to Hong Cong, and still keep it open world.
