Hollywood Actors Begin Strike Today, Oppenheimer Stars Leave Premiere; First Strike Since 1980

Writers are already on strike and now actors are joining them.

[UPDATE 2] During a press conference, SAG-AFTRA officially announced that union members are now on strike. The union's National Board took a strike vote today, July 13, and the resolution passed. It was a unanimous vote.

SAG-AFTRA president Fran Drescher and chief negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland discussed the latest developments during a press conference, and you can watch it below.

"The eyes of the world, and particularly the eyes of labor, are upon us. We are the victims here. We are being victimized by a very greedy entity," Drescher said.

The organization representing film and TV studios, AMPTP, released a statement in response to the strike, saying SAG's decision will "lead to financial hardship for countless thousands of people who depend on the industry."

"AMPTP member companies entered the negotiations with SAG-AFTRA with the goal of forging a new, mutually beneficial contract. The AMPTP presented a deal that offered historic pay and residual increases, substantially higher caps on pension and health contributions, audition protections, shortened series option periods, and a groundbreaking AI proposal that protects actors' digital likenesses for SAG-AFTRA members," AMPTP said in a statement obtained by Deadline. "A strike is certainly not the outcome we hoped for as studios cannot operate without the performers that bring our TV shows and films to life."

[UPDATE] Cast for the movie Oppenheimer, including Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, and others, left the London premiere of Oppenheimer to start picketing. Earlier in the day, they appeared on the red carpet for regular press interviews. But with the strike call imminent, they left the scene ahead of the premiere.

The original story follows below.

Hollywood writers have been on strike since May, and now actors are preparing to strike as well. The biggest actor's union in Hollywood, SAG-AFTRA, has confirmed plans to begin striking as soon as today, July 13. The previous contract expired at 11:59 PM on July 12.

This will be the first strike by actors for film and TV since 1980. It's also the first time since 1960 that both writers and actors are striking at the same time, according to Deadline.

SAG-AFTRA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), which represents the movie and TV studios, had been conducting negotiations late into the night on July 12. However, negotiations broke down and actors are now expected to go on strike. The SAG-AFTRA board will hold a meeting today, July 13, to vote on a strike.

Fran Drescher, the president of SAG-AFTRA, said in a statement that the actors' union negotiated "in good faith" and wanted to reach a deal, but the AMPTP only put forth "insulting and disrespectful" counters.

"The companies have refused to meaningfully engage on some topics and on others completely stonewalled us. Until they do negotiate in good faith, we cannot begin to reach a deal. We have no choice but to move forward in unity, and on behalf of our membership, with a strike recommendation to our National Board," Drescher said.

For its part, the AMPTP, which negotiates on behalf of Apple, Disney, Netflix, Paramount, Sony, WB Discovery, Amazon, and NBC Universal, said it is "deeply disappointed" in this result.

SAG-AFTRA is asking for "economic fairness, residuals, regulating the use of artificial intelligence, and alleviating the burdens of the industry-wide shift to self-taping." AMPTP said it offered "historic" pay and residual increases, higher caps on pension and health care contributions, audition protections, shortened series option periods, and a "groundbreaking" proposal related to AI and actors' digital likenesses.

SAG-AFTRA will conduct a press conference today, July 13, at 12 PM PT to discuss the results of its vote and more. Keep checking back with GameSpot for the latest.

Disney CEO Bob Iger, one of the most powerful executives in Hollywood, said at the Sun Valley Conference this week that the strikes by writers and actors are "very disturbing."

"I understand any labor organization's desire to work on behalf of its members to get the most compensation and be compensated fairly based on the value that they deliver. There's a level of expectation that they have, that is just not realistic. And they are adding to the set of the challenges that this business is already facing that is, quite frankly, very disruptive," he said, as reported by Variety.

Should the actors go on strike, all films and scripted TV shows featuring SAG-AFTRA members will shut down in the US and around the world. Soap opera productions are covered under a separate agreement and are not affected.

As for the writers' strike, it's now stretching beyond 70 days with no end in sight.

Boycott Oppenheimer.

Having him played by Cillian Murphy is Irishwashing and Jewish erasure.

I hope more people educate themselves on the matter instead of spouting more "HoLLyoOd eLitES aRE eViL" bs.

There are 160 000 SAG AFTRA members and 11 500 WGA members. You don't know 99% of them. They're not elites, they're not rich, and some of them are barely scraping by. This is about them not the 1% making a lot of money like Damon or RDJ, they are merely respecting their union's wishes in support of their fellow union members who actually need a better deal than the garbage one that isn't currently sustainable.

And to stop AI from starting to replace more and more human workers. That "groundbreaking AI proposal" was actually horrendous, it was that background actors can be scanned for one day's work and their likenesses used forever. That's some scary dystopian nightmare right there.

Have some empathy, most of these people are regular people not famous or rich.

@Daian: If I read the article correctly, I'm not thinking this is about money or lively hood. But, rather it's about AI likeness. The Actors are afraid of being replaced by AI. It's a valid concern, but I doubt it will play out to the benefit of any actor or studio.

@Daian: you should really quote people better if you're going to attempt to make their argument for them. Sorry you don't know more about Scien-oh, I see. That's why you were able to get my comment removed. Sorry, what I meant to say was, "Battlefield Earth is a classic!"

You clearly do not understand who it is you're talking to. Save the "you people" Republican comments for the Republicans.

I don't have strong opinion one way or the other. There's a bunch of people making a bunch of money and they are trying to figure out how to divide it among themselves. I have no idea, nor do I care that much. I'm sure they will figure it out...

@Sushiglutton: You're trivializing the situation which is nowhere near that simple. You're imagining a bunch of rich people fighting over a fortune when this really is more about the 99% of people that work on your entertainment that aren't remotely wealthy and just want this business to remain sustainable for everyone instead of all the money going to studios while they struggle to make ends meet.

On top of that the most worrying problem they're trying to tackle is the usage of AI to replace real human workers which has already begun. If you consume entertainment in any way shape or form you should care because this will lead to everything being soulless garbage written and made by AI instead of actual human beings that can support their families working in this business.

@johndoe12345: If you think leftist actually care what Hollywood thinks then you have no idea what the left is. And what’s hilariously ironic is that you make this comment, yet you got this idea from right wing commentators, more than likely on YouTube or Twitter, because only right wing commentators spread this BS around.

So you literally get told what to think, and you just go along thinking it 🤣.

Just for future reference, here are things leftist (like actual leftist, not boomer democrats) don’t care about:

1. CNN and all their anchors.

2. Hollywood

3. MSNBC

4. Joe Biden

5. Kamala Harris

6. Mainstream Democrats in general

I would say that about 90% of the things you think leftist listen to or are into, is complete nonsense.

Side note: there’s a difference between liberals and leftist.

If ever there was a time to use replacements. Big actors often can't act worth a s***. It wouldn't be a drop off like sports or something... or anything else really. It's mostly who you know or what "else" you can do better. That, and the quality of TV and movies now is god awful so who cares, stop paying them altogether and lock them out.

@Thuban_23: Problem is, it's not the BIG actors who suffer in these situations. It's the people working TV or streaming-only projects, not the big names, who are only going along in support of their guildmates. Like anything else, there's more to this than the public faces.

@Thuban_23: The top earners should count the CEOs making hundreds of millions a year. At least the big name actors provide their value. CEOs are the problem. The growing income divide is the problem. The top has been taking more and more of the pie for years, and now they want AI so they can take even more. All they see is greed, money.

Hopefully the people on the bottom can get what they're after, and it makes sense these streaming companies make hella millions if not billions ... What i read happened to the Squid Game creator made me feel its very common these days for the actual creators to get screwed while corporate shills collect the pay

Actors should not be paid the HUGE amount of money they are getting and instead a good portion of this money should instead go to writers and all other staff working in the industry. It is easy and simple.

@Life-is-a-Game: well, that’s capitalism. Supply and demand. General normie audiences love their big name faces, which means their value goes up. Studios want to hire the actors people love, and those actors set terms.

Then you’ll say “well, just hire lesser known actors”. Sure. But then guess what? They do a great job, the normie masses love them, and guess what? The lesser known actor feels as if his/hers value has gone up and demands more money to be in future films. Because he’s not lesser known anymore. And the cycle continues.

We don’t live in antiquity or the Middle Ages anymore where actors were just peasant buskers off the side of the dirt road. Now we make movies and those movies are seen NG millions of people that fall in love with them.

It’s not so much a Hollywood issue, it’s more about not letting the masses idolize the actors, but as long as their acting in stories they love, it’s gonna be hard for them not to. I guess the media could stop covering the lives of actors and actresses but then people who love those actors will want to know about them, and the media is gonna cover what the people want to hear.

So yea, it’s not as easy of a solution as “just don’t pay them as much”.

@godofheck42: I completely understand the cycle you are talking about but at the same time when there is a need there will be a way. The people in this industry need to put a cap on what an actor earns to make way for paying more to other staff to make things sustainable. Cutting few million dollars from actors paycheck and instead give them to others will make a difference for sure.

@godofheck42: did you read the article? They are striking in relation to negotiations for their guild, not the writers guild. They wouldn’t be able to strike for another guild out of support lol, it wouldn’t be in their charter to do so. Should probably just read the article before you comment. No where does their “leaders” response say “we are doing this for the writers so they get treated better and that’s the only reason why

@firedrakes: you people are hilariously delusional about who the Hollywood "elites" are. Most actors and writers aren't remotely wealthy and are barely scraping by in some cases because the real elites aka studios take most of the money being made while your so called elites take scraps.

This strike isn't about Matt Damon and RDJ and so on who make millions, they're merely respecting their union's orders. This is about the 99% that need sustainable careers within this industry or else everything will start falling apart.

Oh and also AI is being used to replace real human workers already. So there's that "little" problem to take care of. Have some empathy, this isn't the rich vs the rich.

@dushness: Already been done.

AI is far from new. It's just more in the news today than it has been in the past. People are completely clueless on what AI actually is. Most of the stuff on YouTube that touts being done by "AI" is actually barely done by AI at all. AI was used to script and possibly to refine, but there is still a TON of hard work needed to complete such videos. Including the original actor input. It's well known that the computer specialists used for movie making are often heavily overworked and underpaid. This strike is as much about fairness in the real work, as it is about replacement. AI needs to be used, but it needs to be used carefully. I support the writers and actors in their strike, not for pay but for fairness in the new technologies that will be increasingly used over time.

People really keep on missing the point of why the actors are striking.

The reason why they're striking is for equal rights across the board. They acknowledge that the pay isn't that grand for writers or other people in the industry, compared to the actors. And they knew that if other people that help them get their big pay-check leaves, (Writers, Make-up artists, stunt doubles, etc.) then they have to pick up the slack (Which happens in most strikes).

Actors also acknowledge that the pay has gotten weirder and harder to deal with because of streaming. Since the contracts were based on how many times a show or movie was broadcasted on TV or in theaters. Now with streaming, you get a flat rate that isn't that high. And you constantly hunting for more work (This flat rate commission method has also affected famous, and oscar winning actors as well. And everyone else that works on movies and shows that get streamed).

On top of that, actors know that people will listen to them more than writers, or anyone else. And that they have more of a voice politically.

Why? I want you to notice the astronomical amount of movie moments and lines that actors get praised for, and the people who thought of it and directed it don't.

(Food for thought: Not all actors are d**ks trying to get paid and not care about the people they work with.)

@illegal_peanut: Ding. On top of that, the people acting on some Netflix show aren't getting paid anywhere near what a Tom Cruise or Sylvester Stallone would be making on a film. They're doing this to help the writers, AND to help the other actors, because they know damn well that their pay comes off the shoulders of those who are paid less than them.

@nargg: Yep. The execs want nothing more than to be able to pay as close to nothing as they possibly can while expecting top-tier product to make their profits. They don't realize that the end game if they don't pay fair wages isn't that they have glorified slave labor, but that they have no labor. I don't care how much people love film, if it doesn't pay the bills, they're going to go get jobs where they CAN make ends meet, and then the CEOs have to do the work. I doubt they're going to be able to outsource American TV and cinema as easily as some of them think they can.

I was gonna say, they all get paid too much anyways but they actually offered to raise it. I know not everyone gets paid equally but the ones that get paid a lot ($100,000+) I don't think have a right to complain. If that amount of pay isn't enough to afford your expensive houses and cars maybe don't buy expensive stuff (assuming that's why they want more money, to continue living their exuberant lifestyle). And if it's about getting paid their fair due then I call BS because there are plenty of professions that get paid a lot less for more important work. Be grateful that you get to do what you love. (If it would be financially viable I would rather have a job I love with less pay then a job I hated for more pay)

@Lord_Sesshy: This isn't about the stars. There are 160,000 people in SAG-AFTRA, and there aren't 160,000 stars. Most people in SAG are people you will never hear of, but that flesh out the casts of, well, everything. They're hard working people who mostly have second or third jobs just to do what they love because their love, which leads to our entertainment, can't pay the bills, let alone afford the luxurious lifestyle you mention. So yes, this isn't about the ones that get paid 100,000 because they are, trust me, the extreme minority. This is about the masses that keep things going.

@HAWK9600: People see the stars, pure and simple. They see actors walking red carpets in clothes that cost more than my car and think that's what actors are. I can understand the mistake, given that the stars are so visible and Hollywood dangles the prospect to every kid in a school musical of becoming a movie star. That said, it's like thinking everyone who plays pro baseball is Mookie Betts instead of realizing how many people play single A ball for 25K a year for the love of the game.

Good luck to you, dude. I hope to see you back at work for a fair shake very soon.

@olddadgamer: Explains why they gave AEW a third show while the other two have ass ratings. That dude seems perfectly content in turning the entirety of HBO and the Turner networks into dollar-store copies of TLC (imagine being lower-rent than TLC... Ugh). Hell, I honestly wouldn't be surprised if this ends with the Discovery morons selling off the WB and Turner legacy to Disney or something and then just existing at an also-ran reality TV machine.
