Homeworld IP goes to unannounced owner as Kickstarter campaign offers refunds

Expects new owner of the franchise to be announced in May.

A community-driven effort to resurrect the Homeworld series has been outbid on the rights to the franchise, the campaign's organisers revealed.

No Caption Provided

Developer TeamPixel began a crowdsourced campaign to obtain the rights to Relic's space RTS Homeworld back in January, saying it would make Homeworld 3 for PC, Mac and Linux, and Homeworld Touch for iOS and Android.

"The auction for the Homeworld license ended April 15 2013, and while we reached qualified bidder status for the bankruptcy auction, we were unable to raise the necessary funds to remain competitive against the other parties at the auction," wrote the studio in a Kickstarter update.

Refunds are now being given to backers of the campaign.

The new owner of the Homeworld IP was not mentioned, but TeamPixel expects an announcement during May after the sale is finalised.

Homeworld creator Relic was purchased by Sega in January for $26.6 million after THQ auctioned off its assets. The rights to Homeworld were not purchased by Sega at the time.

Homeworld II was the last time the series was seen. It was released in 2003. Relic's next game, WWII-themed RTS Company of Heroes 2, will be released for PC on June 25.

if a new Homeworld was ever released by the new owner, please make the Kuun-Lan the mothership, Pride of Hiigara kinda sucks.

@Halloll The Kuun-Lan was also a lot more fragile and couldn't produce even half the output. I also loved the platform system in Homeworld 2, over the very concentric modular system for Catacylsm. Overall, the mothership system is what the series is about. Would I like a more maneuverable mothership? Certainly. Would it be nice if it had some spectacular offensive capabilities or even super-defensive capabilities (i.e., Siege Cannons and Large Force Barriers)? Definitely.

Will we get a Homeworld 3 that incorporates any of this? I'm not even sure we're going to get a Homeworld 3.

@Halloll Or Pride of Hiigara but beefed up, with some long range cannon/s for gods sake or some nice abilities like shield for friendly forces or power increases, some real mothership purpose not just purely as simple carrier with pathetic pew pew machine guns. Such a massive ship c'mon.

This gives me hope. I have wanted another Homeworld for years. I still dust the old ones off now and again. I remain positive on this one. If someone bought the IP perhaps they have seen enough interest in a reboot/sequel to give it serious thought. The entire genre is lacking in a quality title for some time. I think the appetite is whet for something like this. I almost got behind the Kickstarter just yesterday. I want this so bad.

**Uses mental powers to reach across the void** Hear me now mystery IP buyer!! Give us new Home world. Take my monies!!!

Oh man, the mystery! The first Homeworld is still, by far, one of the best games I've ever played. I certainly hope this new publisher does the title justice, or just re-releases the original in HD.

so a beloved franchise is bought by someone who will probably bury it and former devs are making a casual F2P social nonsense.

Wait so what's the status on it then? Is it still in limbo, or is it getting published?

Goddamn everything about the series was just incredible, the graphics, the gameplay, the story and the cinematics. I miss it so badly.

@Kawaii_Uguu The IP was purchased by an undisclosed buyer, which means exactly that. Someone else now owns the rights to the Homeworld trademark (presumably a publisher). That MAY mean they purchased it with the intention of funding and marketing Homeworld 3; or it may mean they acquired it as a 'strategic' investment (collecting rents - however small - off previous Homeworld titles; turning it into a mobile franchise; or simply to have possession of the IP in the event they felt like a later project could be profitable).

It's difficult to say, because neither the buyer nor the sum was disclosed. It beat a kickstarter campaign, but that doesn't necessarily mean an enormous amount of money changed hands. For all we know, whoever bought it may have just been interested in killing the franchise because it could have competed with another title they're funding.

So yeah, in a nutshell, it's in limbo until we hear a) who bought it; b) for how much; and c) what their intentions with the IP are.

Well, the only way this will end well is if Sega bought it. 9/10 it's best for the IP if it stays with the developer that originally made it. There are exceptions though, rarely does that happen however.

@LesserAngel Sega doesn't exactly have great modern games under their belt. And most of the development houses under Sega that do make great games have no experience what-so-ever with a game like Homeworld. Not too mention Sega has a history of shelving good ideas. The innovative ones were brushed over (anyone remember Chrome Hounds' multiplayer?) numerous times. So no, if Sega did acquire the IP to Homeworld, we are doomed.

@Hayasmez @Kyere Once again, the buyer has been unannounced (which means Sega didn't acquire the rights) and Sega has hardly been a publisher that has historically listened to it's dev teams over the desire to mass market a game to the antithesis of it's intended audience.

Maybe you should pay attention to the article before you hit the reply button. And stop raping your CAPS key, it doesn't make anything you say intimidating or worthwhile. Additionally half the original Homeworld team no longer works with Relic if you've been following what's happened to them since 2003. Derp much brah?

@tweezzzy Actually SimCity and X-Com are great games. SimCity is crap because of it's online-only service. Other then that's it's a fantastic game that all SimCity fans would love.

Diablo 3... yeah... moving on.

X-Com is also fantastic for what it does and how it does that in relation to other games of similar genre. There's a reason it's critically acclaimed and sells so well.

@Kyere @tweezzzy Nope . Sim City IS crap game . Online only is not the only problem . Diablo 3 is great game but no where near as good as Diablo 2 but still it's quite decent but I prefer Torchlight 2 . X-Com is also great but not as good as first one still very well done game . SimCity was failure

While I would often agree with you, this is probably one of the only franchises I believe that deserves a modern day sequel. Reboot.... not so much but, a sequel sure.

By the way there is a spiritual successor to Homeworld already in the works called Hardware.

I'am aware that this is a normal PC game, however I sworn to never make a facebook account for anything. fortunately I never found facebook compeling and when i saw what it was becoming i hated it.

Then there is the F2P aspect. The devs are trying to market Hardware on the notion that they worked on HW. Hardware will not have mission progression, story or plot of any worth, probably lacking voice acting of any kind. So the fact you made HW is irrelevant and of no value. Then the game will come out and, surprise, nothing special. you will have your regular premium account to boost XP and/or money, some sort of premium currency, dubius amounts of grinding and of course any special events in the game will not wait for you, there is MP for you. litterally every othe F2P is doing just that with no exeption that I can think of.

I will definitelly give it a try if there is a work around facebook, but I have stopped expecting anything big, special or different a few F2P games back.

I only read a F2P RTS.

I don't like F2Ps that much but, I might give this one a shot. That "social game" statement is a little inaccurate and I remember reading that somewhere before too. There was another article written later (I believe by PCgamer) that stated somewhere that the game was infact an actual PC game and not some Facebook, Mobile type thing.

We'll probably hear more about it soon.

@4r0d0 @PETERAKO @tweezzzy it was enough for me to read its description as an "online social game" that its free to play and uses facefail to make an account.

I have played enough games that bare that description to know what to expect, and what i expect from people who claim to have made homeworld is not it.

What is there to be sad about? Someone now owns the Homeworld IP and it is not a bunch of under qualified people that were going to turn the franchise into a mobile piece of s***. Maybe relic got the keys to the kingdom back.... maybe Creative Assembly.... maybe these companies or others that are actually qualified to make a strategy game worthy of the Homeworld name.

Erm so a group of fans trying to acquire homeworld to make a real sequel that will remain true to the series VS someone who we have no idea who it is that could potentially change the series into something completely different

We were safer with the fans

@4r0d0 @SirNormanislost " It is BETTER to have it in the hands of a developer that has a track record of developing games. Not a group of "fans" that have no game to their name. "

Yeah right.

You should have seen what they wanted do to with X-COM! They lied, about being X-COM fans, and made this great sci-fi strategy game into a boring, linear, run-of-the-mill FPS, that has *Nothing* to do with X-COM.

"Someone who we have no idea who it is" - you mean like Relic, the developers who made the first two.

Yea, we don't know exactly who it is at the moment but, we do know that it is probably a established development team. It is BETTER to have it in the hands of a developer that has a track record of developing games. Not a group of "fans" that have no game to their name.

There are not many good hands left so im thinking this project is now fated to be doomed. I would much rather see this in the hands of kickstarter then pretty much any mainstream mega sucker at this point since THQ was one of the few companys i still had trust in.

Sigh, Homeworld. I remember how amazing it looked. How at one moment you could oversee the entire battlefield against the backdrop of some giant planet and then zoom in and follow a tiny fighter while it was dodging lasers. Awesome game.

@loafofgame Actually, looking back at Homeworld 2, it still has very decent visuals even with today's standards. With some proper graphic mods, im sure it can compete with current generation space games.
