Horizon Dev Explains Why Guerrilla "Needed" To Leave Killzone Behind

A brighter Horizon beckoned.

It's been over a decade since a new entry in the Killzone series has come out. Judging from comments by a veteran Guerrilla Games developer, don't set expectations for the FPS franchise to return anytime soon. The team "needed" to shake things up after Killzone: Shadow Fall launched in 2013, according to art director Roy Postma.

Speaking with The Washington Post, Postma explained why Guerrilla left Killzone behind and set their sights on what became Horizon Zero Dawn. "We were done with it as a team. As a studio, we needed to refresh the palette," Postma said. "It was, by choice, the opposite of Killzone."

That choice has now led to Lego Horizon Adventures, which will release November 14 on PC, PS5, and even Nintendo Switch. "I think the themes that this story and the characters represent are relatable for all ages and people, like having a found family of friends and finding your place in the world," said Posta, who's worked at Guerrilla for 24 years.

Additionally, a report from last month stated that Guerrilla's next game will be Horizon Online instead of a third entry in the single-player series. That one would then arrive afterward, potentially many years down the line. That adds to the idea Guerrilla won't be touching Killzone anytime soon.

Killzone is just one of the many major PlayStation franchises that hasn't been touched for a long time by Sony and its developers. Like Killzone, Resistance is another shooter series that some fans have argued should be revived for PS5.

The gameplay of the Killzone series was kind of interesting, especially the PS4 one (Shadow Fall) where you actually got to *gasp* go outside and have an open world arena. However the whole space legally not actual nazis thing was just beyond dumb - I just couldn't care, and I completely threw up my hands at the point where they decided they would just divide the planet in half and let the space legally not nazis live on one half because surely that will not cause any problems oh wow it did nobody could have possibly seen this coming!1 I honestly don't see any way it was salvageable while still keeping it 'Killzone', so I'm glad they buried it for something with a much more interesting plot. Yes, Horizon still has some plot issues (the ending of the last game sure felt like it was going back into Killzone stupidity) but I can at least care in the minute to minute.

The least Sony could do is hire somebody to remaster Killzone 1-3 and release that package on multiple platforms. They would be excellent on PC with an unlocked framerate.

I actually never heard about Killzone, I only found it exist when I was looking for some videos showing all games released on PS2 and PS3. Never heard anyone play it or ever mention it. Even Black on PS2 is way more popular than Killzone lol. IDK why they did it but it was very nonsense to release these series without having it any significant impact on video game industry when Call of Duty exist. At least Black known for really great graphics and real time destruction physics on PS2.

Killzone series are rather non-gem trash part of the video game industry that only the video game archaeologists can find ayy lmao. :DDD

@guitarwarrior66: what in the hell are you going on about? Black was never more popular than Killzone. In fact, going by sales alone, Killzone was twice as popular. Your sentences are hardly even coherent.

Ironic that they say that, given how they're apparently unwilling to refresh the palette by dropping Horizon.

Well I guess I'll be taking a break from Horizon games then.

Now I'd really want remakes of the Killzone series.
