Hotline Miami 2 sexual assault scene under review

Dennaton Games says "we didn't add the scene just to be controversial."

Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number developer Dennaton Games is currently reviewing a scene of sexual assault in the game after some early players rose concerns about its place in the top-down shooter.

No Caption Provided

"We were really sad that some people were so affected by it, because maybe they had been through something like that of their own," Dennaton Games' Dennis Wedin told Rock Paper Shotgun.

"Maybe they had a terrible experience of their own that was triggered by the game," he added. "That was not intentional at all. We didn't add the scene just to be controversial. There is a meaning to these two characters. There's a lot more to them than just this scene."

Wedin explained that the scene has been removed from the newest version of the Hotline Miami 2 demo while the developer works out a way to potentially alter its content.

"We're going to work with it, see if we can fix it," Wedin said. "You get a bigger picture when you play the whole game, which is lost in the demo of course."

Wedin added that a trend in horror movie remakes is for a new entry to "take the next step up" in terms of shocking content relative to the original just for the sake of drumming up controversy. This is not what Dennaton Games wants to do with Hotline Miami 2, Wedin said, noting that's why the sexual assault scene stops before it goes too far.

"So almost doing that with the illusion of an assault but then having the game stop you, that's us saying we're not going to go the whole way [toward that exploitative next step]," Wedin said. "That's not Hotline Miami. Some might think that would be the way for us to do the sequel. Like, 'OK, they did the violence. Now do sexual assault to be controversial.' That's not what we're about. So instead, it just stops."

Overall, Wedin said Dennaton Games is undecided about keeping the scene or cutting it. The studio will wait until it can gauge player reactions based on the context of the full game before making a decision, he said.

"We'll see. We're gonna see how people react to it when we test the whole game," Wedin said. "We'll get opinions and stuff like that. We'll see how we can present this in a good way, in a way that we want it to come across. Not just as provocative. That's not our meaning at all."

"I respect people's comments and the fact that people voiced them," he added. "That's how they feel. Our scene made them feel this way, so we have to think about why and if there's something we can do to make it better. I don't think it's right to just say, 'You're wrong. You're just looking at it wrong.' That's not the way to go."

Hotline Miami 2 will debut in 2014 first on the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita.

They could very easily implement an option for choosing to view it or not in the settings.

Have a game with extreme ultra-violence and nobody panics... but include an 8-bit sexual assault scene, and everyone loses their minds! Let's talk about the hypocrisy of gamers and the arbitrary lines they draw in the sand, I take offense when political correctness stifles expression, and here we have a case of uptight gamers that don't mind violence but condemn another type of violence when it's used in a more artistic manner because why - it's hard to stomach? that's the point. Movies have included scenes (ex: History of Violence) such as that with dramatic effect, yet Hotline Miami can't do it? If you're going to condemn violence, condemn all violence not just that which you deem inappropriate. Otherwise, the world isn't meant to please you and if you're offended or not smart enough to understand story or character development then please go play a different game and take your stifling opinions somewhere else.

This is a game for a highly mature player base, that means it is for people who can think straight and tell right from wrong. Even if the game is violent, it is true to its storyboard and can tell it in hyper-coloured bloody and violent scene to tell the tale properly. It makes the story more realistic and more near reality. If you can't handle it then this ain't for you.

@jcknapier711 they don't need the controversy, they are pretty successful. They are directors of a story they want to tell, some tales are harsh and some directors want to portray the reality and the horrors of that harshness. There is nothing else to it, it's not a publicity stunt. Simple

Mankind is violent by nature. Wars have taken place for thousands of years, and hundreds of millions have perished through countless acts of violence & terror. We have read about it through history books & seen it firsthand, and unfortunately have become de-sensitized to it.

Now unfortunately we are also seeing an escalation in acts of sexual violence, & unless hotline miami does something to sensitize & educate(?) all of us to this atrocious act, then i guess it will just be another placeholder kinda thing, 'there is anyway so much of violence, so what the hell is wrong with 1 scene like this?'

Wedin seems like a very thoughtful guy. I trust that they'll do the right thing and figure out a way to present this in context, or cut it if it continues to provoke horrific emotional reactions.

If you're that sensitive, stay away from such games. Play games rated for six-year old children. Draw ponies. Watch Disney Channel. Don't play games that deal with crime and violence. Also, if footballs trigger some trauma of yours, don't ask that football be played without footballs. Stay out of the stadium.

I feel as though I'm becoming more and more disgusted in the general gaming community as the days go by. It's one thing to endlessly rationalize murder in your games, but now we have people encouraging developers to include sexual assault as a game mechanic simply for the sake of the violence already associated with the medium.

How in the hell is the industry supposed to evolve from crap like this, when the community encourages MORE acts of aggression and violence, simply because they're all fickle gamers who will jump to defend the industry from any naysayers, regardless of the situation at hand? Short answer: It won't.

I've said it a few times now, but I seriously can't say it enough since the majority here clearly thinks otherwise, which is disgusting. Sexual assault does NOT need to be a game mechanic, ever, and anyone encouraging it is deeply disturbed, plain and simple.

@yearssomuch The industry won't evolve exactly because of people that think like you. If you want a more mature industry then people will have to handle mature content. Films, literature, theatre and music, all of them have works that touch the theme, and other polemic themes.

That´s why the big names in the gaming industry treat us like small children. Because we, as a whole, behave just like that. I hope this game manages to keep its integrity and doesn't cuts out the rape scene.

Suddenly I have the urge to rape someone now and I'll ONE UP the game by cutting her head off and using it as a bowling ball and her arms, legs and torso will be the pins. Its rated for a reason. Do us ALL a favor, GET OVER IT AND URSELF!

rape scene = wrong

I'm not saying that rape is ok but if you dont mind killing you dont mind rape or any other kind of stuffs, it is a game A GAME! everybody should know that, and it is rated M so it is not for kids who may or may not understand that it is A GAME!

if you dont like the GAME dont play it, why are they making such a problem i cant understand...

Bullshit. This is exactly what I'm talking about, you people seem to be under the impression that since we're already committing murder in video games, why NOT sexual assault? That. Is. Wrong.

It's bad enough that murder is glorified the way it is in video games today, and while I'm not saying sexual assault shouldn't be in media at all (censorship isn't a GOOD thing), I AM saying it shouldn't be in an interactive medium. And encouraging sexual abuse as a game mechanic simply for the sake of it, again, is WRONG.

@yearssomuch nobody is encouraging nothing, I think you miss the point of what a VIDEO GAME is...if you dont like what the game is about dont buy it.

with the same logic we should bann every single game because someone will be offended by it or encouraged to do something. If somone wants to rape or murder or anything in real life is going to do it not because of a f*** game because there is a problem in their heads.

The murders rates should have increased since dexter or meth drugs too since breaking bad...people dont do more things because of a game or a series they do it because they want it to do it blaming a game for example is a cheap excuse.

@yearssomuch I would argue that if people can murder and rape in a game, they are less likely to do it in real life because they've already experienced it in a game and can see the effect it has on the victim. Perhaps a few insane will go out and do it in RL, but our entire culture shouldn't change because of a few insane people.

I get where people are coming from in comparing violence to sexual assault in video games, since they're both unnecessary forms of aggression in media. But at the same time, 'killing' has been sort of a thing since the beginning of video games, and more than anything at this point, it's simply a game mechanic. There's way to rationalize violence, even when it's not rational, in a video game (as ridiculous as that sounds). I don't wait sexual assault being a GAME MECHANIC. Period.

This is the difference in video games and movies. In a movie, you 'observe' sexual assault, and quite frankly that disturbs me far more than seeing someone get shot. I don't want sexual assault being an interactive experience, at any point, ever, and anyone encouraging it is wrong.

That said, I love Dennaton and Hotline Miami, and regardless of its content, I will be playing this game. But if sexual assault is going to be part of that content, maybe not make it interactive. That's what people dislike more than anything else, I promise.

There is never an excuse for censorship, free expression is nearly dead as it is, everything is required to be politically correct. Any of you folks have a problem with this, let me give you a suggestion....DON'T PLAY IT. Afraid your kid will see it? BE A PARENT.

Why can't it be that simple? If ya don't like something, don't look at it, play it, or otherwise associate with it. No one has the right NOT to be offended.

Censor the Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. Censor Schindler's List. Some stories just are not as impacting or emotive if you tidy up the most unpleasant aspects of them.

Now that said, it could very well be that in the final game this is unnecessary and tasteless, despite what the devs are saying. But until such time as you can prove that, how about not jumping to be offended.

I'm usually against censorship, but I feel that this should be removed or heavily altered. I'm not sure that the Hotline Miami storyline is so deep as one as in a book, to have a necessity for going so far to explain something... and as other mentioned, this kind of violence is more frequent in real life and can affect in VERY bad ways the players.

So be sensible, and use your creativity to get around this.

Idk, i know this may seem unkind, but it's not meant to be; don't censor stuff like that. The first one was brutally violent. It didn't shy away from that. I know that some people have been hurt by sexual assault. I've had friends sexually assaulted. I may not even enjoy the scene if it popped up in the game. But do we enjoy sexual assault in other forms of media? No. It's there to add to the poignancy of the show, or in this case, the game.

I think in a way, that scene of sexual assault may make you question yourself while playing the game, sorta like spec ops did when it made you feel like a horrible person for playing it xD.

I guess what i'm saying is that having something bother you in a game or other forms of entertainment isn't necessarily bad, or something we have to censor. I mean, would you rather it didn't bug you and you became desensitized to it?

Because walking into an office building and brutally murdering every single person inside with your bare hands doesn't make anyone bat an eye.

Screw our society and anyone who thinks a scene of sexual assault is worse somehow.

@Thanatos2k I wouldn't say it's about people reacting because sexual assault is worse. I'd say people are reacting worse to it because sexually assault is so much more common in real life.

At the end of day you're more likely to know someone who has been sexual assaulted than you are to know someone who's been murdered or the victim of a mass-murder.

So if you have a mother/sister/brother who has been raped or sexually assaulted, if you yourself was sexually assaulted, it's understandable why you'd have a much more visceral reaction to being forced into the role of a sexual assaulter.

@Sw33tEscape @Thanatos2k I also think it's due to the differences in the aftermath of both acts, murdering leaves, both in a visual and mental picture, nothing but a dead body, while the sexual assault leaves a visibly broken and battered woman, whom you know will (even though its a game, i know) be dealing with that the rest of her life. strictly speaking in terms of the mindset associated with both of these acts, i think the horror of the living victim is more what upsets people.

Granted, it is rather difficult to skirt this line without being accused of hypocrisy. Saying one form of violence, i.e. shooting someone dead, while another, i.e. sexual assault, is acceptable is going to be a tough one. As a society, we are somewhat de-sensitized to someone being shot to death or otherwise. The other...well, that one is not so acceptable. It makes people uncomfortable, they don't want to talk about it, etc. Others perhaps not so much.

For me, personally, I don't play a lot of shooters. And the ones I have played are not based off reality like Call of Duty or that type. N64 Metroid for me. When I have played the other type of FPS, I'm ok with the gun violence for the sole reason that I know what I am seeing is not real. I'm not really killing that soldier I just shot in the game. In fact, if I press the reset button, that same soldier will be there to be shot again. Never would I want to pick up an assault rifle and shoot a real combatant dead. Killing is wrong.

I also know that I would not want to play a game where the character I am portraying is sexually assaulting someone. Nor would I want to see a scene depicting someone else doing it. The developer said " We didn't add the scene just to be controversial. There is a meaning to these two characters. There's a lot more to them than just this scene." Almost as if the scene is supposed to be a way to connect the characters. There are other ways to do that in any story. And even hinting that a character was sexually assaulted is UNNECESSAY. There is no need to go there.

The developer also mentions pushing the envelope. "They've done the violence. Now do sexual assault." No, no, and no. If the feedback from players saying it hurt them to see this type of scene in the game, then you should strongly reconsider why you are creating the scene in the first place in the manner you have. There is always another way. "Pushing the envelope" is just sort of a cop out.

This does not sound like a game I would want to purchase. But that is just me.

So brutally murdering a bunch of people is OK, but sexual assault is going too far?

What about the part in the original game where you killed a bunch of cops? Or all of the unarmed people you killed? Where was the outrage over that?

@codeman101360 Many people are sexual assaulted/knows someone who has been sexually assaulted (1 in 3 women will be the victims of sexual assault in their lifetime) but not as many know the victims of a mass murderer.

It's not that difficult to understand why someone would be more affected by something that hits them closer to home.

Always supporter of free speech inside art, even when it hurts. But I would not put in a demo something that without it's context becomes directly wrong.

Is like puting a video of a guy assaulting somebody in the street and kicking him in the head; It is wrong. Now put the context that the guy getting his ass haded actually murdered the agressonr's wife and he attacks him in a moment of rage. Does it make it better? nope! but it gives it context and some sense.

Bottonline. If they had kept this outside the demo there would have no problems at all.

(Hell, "Dragon Age Origins" has an off-screen rape in the city elf storyline and nobody ever mentioned it)

Not seeing why this a big deal. There are depictions (implied or shown) of men and women being sexually assaulted in movies, T.V. shows and books. Now I ask, why is it a big deal because a scene of sexual assault (implied or shown) a problem for a video game exploring darker and mature themes?

Is it an issue of morals? Mass murdering is a big thing in video games. You have the hero and his allies going around killing scores of bad guys. Were it not for their label as heroes and the label of the victims as bad guys, the heroes would be mass murderers. But I guess the question is this: Is it morally justifiable to kill those who are evil and have the intent to kill you? Do these people have it coming to them because they are a part of some nefarious organization or should they be put on trail to atone for the crimes? It seems like the general consensus is to not bat an eyelash at the killings. Killing innocents is most certainly unacceptable in video games. No dispute there. Remember No Russian from MW2? Yeah.

Now on to rape or sexual assault in a work of fiction. Usually the victim is some innocent unsuspecting individual. It's usually a female. You don't see much males getting raped unless its in a prison. I assume the woman is about to be raped in HM2 is some innocent unsuspecting victim. Once again I ask, if it is depicted in other forms of media, why is it a problem for video games?

Now what if this rape victim was one of the bad guys. You know, the type that are the cannon fodder for heroes in any video game genre that involves killing. In other words, this rape victim is evil. Would that make the depiction of rape scene in HM2 acceptable? Furthermore, If they don't deserve to get raped, why to do they deserve to get gunned down, sliced up, obliterated, or [insert gruesome form of killing here]?

As a closing remark: Heroes don't rape their victims. That's terrible. They kill them. That's much better. Wait...what?

TL DR version: Two questions are being asked: Why is the depiction of sexual assault unacceptable in video games when it is shown in other forms of media? Also, if the rape victim is a evil (regardless of gender), would it become acceptable? If the answer is no, why would killing them be better?
