Ramsey, in particular, has received negative responses online for being cast as the 14-year-old protagonist, mainly because they don't look like Ellie. In various interviews, the actor has discussed the process of getting the role and what it was like for them to receive negative attention online for their casting, so soon following the announcement.

The 19-year-old originally responded by not going on social media to view the comments, but they did anyway. "It’s the first time I’ve ever had a negative reaction to something," Ramsey said in a New York Times interview, who was 17 at the time.

Ramsey opened up further saying, "There would be times I’d find it funny. Then I’d get to the end of a 10-minute scrolling session, put my phone down and realize: maybe that was a bad idea.

"It’s only recently I’ve accepted I am Ellie and I can do it and I am a good actor, but this will last for a few weeks and then I’ll think I’m terrible again," Ramsey added. "That’s just the process."

The Last Of Us premieres on HBO on January 15.

Just read up on it. Ramsey chose to be non binary because no one was sure what gender the freak is. Im still not sure shes not a bird.

Just found out the reason shes referred to as "they" is because they're "non binary". First time I've ever felt like ive understood what that means and agree. Not masculine looking, but way to hideous to even be deemed female. At least they admit it. Granted "it" would be a better pronoun in this situation.

Ive never been so viscerally distraught by the looks of any actor or actress. Ellies bratty attitude is cute.. When shes cute. When she looks like a scary bird girl hybrid it just makes her seem awful. I don't even care if she looks like the og character as much. Heck, i forgot the story to the point id thought joels daughter was ellie. Pc hollywood casting would be.. Whatever. at least i could look at her without an urge to complain on every site that'll listen. Shed be more pleasant to see as a cordycep zombie.

It’s not about looking exactly like the source material, but rather embodying the character.

Bella looks nothing like Ellie. And perhaps she (they) may not be the most attractive actress. But remember who also didn't fit their profile, but ended up being possibly the best iteration of a character? Daniel Craig as 007. I'll reserve any judgment about Bella until I watch the show. I'm glad the overall reviews so far are exceptionally strong.

Must be awful being a woman and having media constantly focus on any negative energy directed your way. Look at this article for example, choosing to highlight the negative comments about Ramsay. They could have written about the overwhelmingly positive response to her performance, but no. They’ve chosen to focus on the negative. Didn’t do that with Pedro Pascal. Very sad.

@chriss_m: it's a reflection of the state of the community as a whole. Fandoms in general are full of angry entitled shits who cant just move on with their lives and get over things they dont like.

Bella looks fine. The only actor I can think of who would look like game Ellie is Elliot Page when they were still a teenager. I cant think of anyone who looks the part right now. Maybe Sadie Sink? But even she isnt a perfect fit. Probably isnt one as far as known talent goes.

Social media has reduced the cost of caring to the point people can care so much they get addicted and start making up excuses to keep doing it. : \

They couldn't have possibly picked an uglier girl to play Ellie, especially one that calls herself "non-binary". This show is gonna tank.

I don't have as big a problem with Ramsey playing the part of Ellie as I do the casting of a Black girl for the part of Sarah. Sarah is a cute blond white teenage girl who in the game I could easily believe was Joels daughter. That said I have a huge problem believing that this nappy haired black girl is Joels daughter given that Joel is a good ole boy from Southeast Texas. I highly doubt that interracial marriage was accepted in Joels time or part of the country.

This is further evidence that Neil Cruckman has screwed up again at the very beginning with the casting. Perdro doesn't fit the role of Joel. No beard and can't grow one from what I've read. Person cast as Tommy looks nothing like Perdro and they're suppose to be brothers in this show. The person casted as Tess is too old and looks nothing like Tess. I mean come on people if your going to copy a video game and bring it to life then cast people that fit the damn roles and look like the characters from the game.

@monkeyporn:

You need to get out more. Preferably Austin, Texas -- where Joel and his ex-wife lived according to the canon -- and take in the strong liberal leaning of Travis County. It's not far fetched at all.

You are free to hate the casting choices that the show takes but I hope you realize it is their the IP and they can do whatever they want with it.

Again? Talk for yourself... SO far I'm pretty happy with the games. The serie I'll wait to see before judgment. I will let "you" and the ones like you to judge before release, and fail miserably as before (probably).

Uhhh, what? How old do you think Joel is?! You’re talking 1950’s with that viewpoint. I’m the exact same age as Pedro Pascal AND live in Texas AND have been in an interracial relationship since I was in high school in 1995. What you’re saying is 100% incorrect.

And what’s with thr “nappy haired black girl” crap? How deplorable a human are you?

@monkeyporn:

Interracial marriage has been common in Texas for a long time. The game/show isn't set in the 1950s for pete's sake. Yes, I know why they did this - get used to it. Also, Tess in the video game doesn't look like a woman in her mid 40s, which, if my recollection is right, is what she should be.

No thank you. This kind of thing needs to stop. Race/gender/sexual orientation bending simply for virtue points is the reason why we end up with things like the Resident Evil TV series and Rings of Power. They stop focusing on WHO the character is and instead focus on WHAT the character is, and we end up with terrible stories as a result.

@Akriel_Boulve: Wait, are you saying to stop casting real life ethnicities in made-up fairy tale worlds? I could understand if they cast a white guy to play MLK or a black guy to play George Washington, but news flash: none of that sh*t is real in the first place. Elves and zombies and hobbits don’t exist, so who gives a crap?

@ticktockman1979: But they do exist as part of the cultural history and folklore. When you come in and forcibly change the folklore because you want to, it's called cultural appropriation. I know people like to throw that word out there a lot lately when getting mad at a white guy wearing dreadlocks or whatever, but they subverted the actual term in so doing. When the Romans culturally appropriated the Greek pantheon, the Christians culturally appropriated Christmas from a pagan yule festival, and now we have it in the more modern adaptations, taking and twisting stories we recently came to know and love into caricatures of their original selves.

When you grow up you’re going to learn that other people are allowed to have opinions. It’s not all about you. People don’t log into Gamespot to see Lonewolf1044’s petulant comments. Insane that this needs to be explained to grown adults.

Keyboard warriors gotta keyboard. Best to just not look at social media. There will probably be millions more supportive comments than toxic ones once the show comes out but most people only remember the toxic ones. Just stay away. And if people want an Ellie that looks EXACTLY like Ellie, replay the game and stfu. Sure, it would be nice if they looked more alike but the most important characteristic is acting ability. And once a show has been cast and in production, trolling the cast over petty things will gain you nothing. If the show is as good as critics are saying, these trolls will probably soon forget about the actor's looks.

I've been saying this a long time. These little bitch gamers of today have never been punched in the mouth for talking too much.

The only actress that looked like Ellie was Ellen Paige. I think the character was even inspired by her. Since she was sold on the idea that mutilation is the path to happiness, there's no more Ellen. Now we have Elliot.

Bella Ramsey is a great actress. Been a fan ever since the "You Refused the Call" rant on GOT.

She may not be the spitting image of Ellie, but she looks the part and I have no doubt she will deliver.

Now about Joel.... If Spiderman can play Nathan Drake, then f*ck it. I also think he kinda looks the part, just expected Joel to be taller.

That's the problem with trying to adapt a videogame. With all due respect to our fellow gamers, but a lot of them are toxic, way too ignorant about other media that are not videogames, and they practically expect a live action reenactment of the game with people that look similar. No creativity, no good actors, no art at all. It's by far the most toxic nerdy community, because this doesn't happen with Marvel's MCU.

The funny thing is that we all gamers then whine about the awful videogame adaptations and again lose hope. But what can we expect? If the whole community is toxic and has zero ambitions in any kind of creative work based on a videogame.

@JimmyCos: I think you miss the point that most people critical of adaptations are focusing on. It's about a FAITHFUL adaptation. Adding side characters that don't advance the storytelling or our understanding of the main cast and their adventure end up detracting from it and water down the experience, at best. Most of us would just prefer that they NOT adapt the games into TV shows or movies, because they almost NEVER turn out to be anything good for this and a multitude of other reasons.

This is especially true when show writers focus more on WHAT a character is, rather than WHO the character is and the entire thing suffers for it. Also the incessant insertion of modern day politics into a story that has absolutely no use for it always brings the experience down. Now instead of exploring the world and the situations the characters are in, we have to focus on things that would be almost completely irrelevant in a survivalist situation like we see in main story of TLOU. They had the exact same problem in the Resident Evil tv series.

I don't understand the "the acto doesn't look like the character" complaints. Would people rather actors be casted strictly based on looks or talent? Because if the goal is to find a great actor that is a splitting image of a fictional character good luck.

@Akriel_Boulve: By saying “they didn’t even try” you’re somehow insinuating that casting one of the most in-demand and talented young actresses in Hollywood is lazy?! It’s not about picking a look-a-like to the source material as much as it is casting an actor who embodies the spirit of the character. GTFO with that superficial viewpoint.

Umm yeah kinda. It's easy to pick a highly visible actress for a role, it's harder to scout and up and comer, obviously. Not sure what you're getting on about here. They went with a safe choice because of her acting chops, but didn't even try to find someone who could potentially better fit the role visually and also have decent acting ability.

>> "GTFO with that superficial viewpoint."

So, to be clear you would be ok with 36 year old fat asian guy playing little orphan Annie as long as his acting and singing chops were up to snuff?

@Akriel_Boulve: This is such an elementary viewpoint. Casting a young female to depict a similarly young female is not exactly the same as casting a thirty six year old Asian man in the role. In the end all you’re objecting to is Bella Ramsay’s face not looking like a make-believe CGI model’s face.

Your analogies are horrendous; it’s like talking to a potato.

@ticktockman1979: And again you completely miss the point. If you are making the claim that we should ignore how a person looks when determining if they are a good match for the role, then you would understand why I am making the arguments that I am.

That is to say that Superficiality is only a valid argument to a point. You say that it is very different to complain about an overweight asian man playing the role of little orphan Annie, but what if that man does an AMAZING job at the role?

IF we do not care about superficial differences, then you should have NO OBJECTION, and yet you do, hence at some level you agree with the superficial argument that looks matter.

At that point it is ALL opinion, because you've abandoned the objective stance that looks don't matter.

@sparent180: Picking child actors is tough as it is. Dakota Fanning in “Man On Fire” is a rarity, someone that young who can go toe to toe with Denzel Washington and hold their own.

Most of the time it’s the kid who played Anakin from Phantom Menace, so awful they nearly single-handedly ruin the movie.

@Simulator_Shock: Word. Jake Lloyd's performance was just one small turd in a movie (trilogy) built from dozens of them. If any one person gets blamed for the Prequels being garbo, it's gotta be George Lucas.
