How Do GameSpot's Best Of 2017 Awards Work?

GameSpot may receive revenue from affiliate and advertising partnerships for sharing this content and from purchases through links.

Decision Time

GameSpot will soon be officially kicking off its Best Of series for 2017, where we'll unveil our picks for the best games, films, TV shows, and more released in the last year. But how exactly do we come up with our Top 10 lists? Who makes these decisions? How much arguing happens behind the scenes? And how many friendships are forged or lost in the midst of all the fiery debate?

It all starts, of course, with the global team of GameSpot editors and video producers. Our team is primarily based in the US (with GameSpot offices in New York, LA, and San Francisco), but we also rope in the expertise of our global colleagues based in the UK and Australia for our Best Of conversations. The first step in our deliberations is a team-wide survey, where we ask all of our editors/producers to hand in their personal Top 10 lists for the year. The senior editorial team then collates all those votes, assigning a score to each game based on the rank they appear in individual lists, to come up with a master list that shows (as a whole) what the GameSpot crew loved and enjoyed in 2017.

We then take that master list and call a series of multi-hour meetings with all content staff (even our international colleagues join in). In these meetings, we debate as a group exactly what games (or films or shows) deserve inclusion in our end-of-year honors, and then go through the often times tricky process of coming up with a ranking of the Top 10. While that initial master list is used as a guide during our deliberations, we rely just as much on hearing the impassioned arguments of the GameSpot staff about their favorite games when making our final decisions.

This process makes our Best Of for 2017 a true representation of what we as GameSpot think are the essential games/films/shows of the year. It's a reflection of both our group-think and our individual preferences as people, a snapshot of what the team enjoyed filtered through the lens of our critical eye. It's GameSpot's Best Of for 2017.

From a site that gave Mario Galaxy in a 2007 a GoTY? Yeah right, the same year of Bioshock, God of War 2, Portal, Crysis, Modern Warfare, and I dare to add Halo 3.

Mario Galaxy was a great game named GoTY 2007, but not a great game that pushed things forward and created new standars like Bioshock and the others.

Damn, it's been 10 years and you still can see those influences.

I'm a huge fan of Zelda, and Breath of the Wild was certainly the shake up the series needed to break the Ocarina of Time mould and move on, BUT I honestly found myself having more fun with JRPG Persona 5. The game's interesting characters, upbeat and thought provoking plot, and consistently slick presentation made for a very memorable first time Persona experience!

It is not an easy choice, but I think P5 is GOTY for this guy.

@blaise0fgl0ry: Didn't Windwaker break the Ocarina of Time mould?

@totneschap: I wouldn't say Windwaker so much broke the mould, more like it put a clever spin on it with its sea travel and many small islands approach, but the formula of travel to temple, gain entry, find key item, use key item to solve puzzles and defeat boss persists. And its all ib fairly linear Ocarina of time fashion, where the primary challlenges are in solving dungeons. Windwaker still carries many of the series' tropes established by Ocarina.

@blaise0fgl0ry: It's not an easy choice, and isn't it a great year for gaming when it's this close?

I don't get how PUBG can even be nominated when it has not launched yet. It is still a early access beta game.

GOTY will probably go to Zelda, as it does every time a Zelda comes out. I have not played it, but it does look very fun. But all in all I think this year was a weak gaming year with a very few stand out games.

@merwanor: PUBG has certainly thrown a lot of us--and other sites for that matter--for a loop this year. Keep an eye out, though; we just might have something to say about it.

@merwanor: Just because something is popular it shouldn't be an instant GOTY contender. I'll be really pissed off if PUBG wins at the game awards tonight cause it sets a really bad precedent. No way PUBG deserves to have the same award which was given to games like Witcher 3, Uncharted etc

Bugs, glitches, its in early access so not even freaking finished, its not exactly an amazing work of art and its a cheaply made game equivalent to Day Z or H1Z1. Does DAY Z deserve a GOTY nomination? Hell no.

@gamingdevil800: funny how i haven't really experienced any game breaking bugs at all in the game. im sure it does have bugs and glitches what game doesn't but fact is its alot better than most things that came out this year early access or not which if anything is even more impressive.

@merwanor: whoa really? tastes differ of course. i'm into dark-toned gameplay-heavy games and as someone who also doesn't care about Zelda (never played any) i thought this was very much the greatest year since the arrival of the PS4, which, to be honest, isn't that long, yet this year had an amount of interesting games that surpassed all the years since launch combined.

It's hard to say what my favourite one was this year. Spontaneously i'd say the Evil Within 2, but it's also the most recent so it might have an unfair advantage over the others. Hellblade was great. Prey was great. I bought Horizon while waiting for Hellblade in the summer and it was good for a playthrough as well, though definitely not my favourite this year.

Here's how their decision is made......put all the Japanese games on top and pick one...games they played when they were kids...and haven't really progressed passed that.

Look, GOTY last year, by most sites, went to Overwatch......I am guessing there were no Japanese games released. If the game that outsold the next 3 games this year combined is not GOTY their decisions are more of a joke then they have historically been.....again, I don't play shooters....ever....but PUBG is the game of the year handsdown........PUBG was the best selling game this year by a mile.....the first/ second most owned/ played game right now is a FTP direct copy of it in FortNite's BR.......if anyone votes anything but PUBG = fraud.

I think Zelda will win, but it will battle it out with Horizon and Mario.

Persona 5!

There, all done. Bring on 2018.

Yeah I know it won't be Persona 5, but having played Nioh, Zelda, Mario, Prey, RE7, Horizon, AC Origins, Hollow Knight, Cuphead, Nier: Automata, Evil Within 2, and Wolfenstein 2. The one that sticks out in my mind as having the most compelling story, cool characters, awesome jazzy music, and a terrific stylized gameplay goes to Persona 5. That's not to say the others weren't good in their own way, but wow! what a ride.

@totneschap: I still have to play wayyyyyy more of Zelda, Mario, and Divinity 2, but so far those are the only 3 games that come close to the overall memorable gameplay experience that I got from the 90 hour journey that was Persona 5

"In" before all the usual answers, of which just a few are.... (drum roll.)

1: Whoever pays the most.

2: It's all a conspiracy.

3: Gamespot is pro (Insert favorite console).

4: Gamespot is pro console hardware/games and hates PC.

5: It's a popularity contest.

6: The editors are ALL completely bias!

-AND THE LIST GOES ON... NINJA APPROVED-
