How Is Battlefield Hardline Different Than Battlefield 4? Developer Explains

Visceral says the game's brand new modes, TV-style story campaign, and eSports focus will make it stand out.

In a new interview from London's EGX event, Battlefield Hardline's creative director explained the many ways in which he believes Battlefield Hardline is a significantly different game than 2013's Battlefield 4. In a video interview with YouTuber jackfrags, Visceral Games creative director Steve Papoutsis first said the game's five brand-new modes will make Hardline stand out compared to last year's game.

These are "very unique and never been seen in Battlefield before," he said. One such mode is called Hotwire, and it involves high speed car chases and high-octane gunfights. It looks like a lot of fun. Overall, Hardline will have seven modes and nine maps at launch, he said.

Another differentiating factor for Hardline is its setting and story, Papoutsis said, which offers up a cops-and-robbers narrative. Further, he said Hardline will do more to support the eSports crowd because these players "really want Battlefield to be a competitive thing," he said.

On the single-player side, Papoutsis teased that Hardline's campaign will be "very different than anything you've seen in Battlefield before." The story will unfold like a TV show in some respects, and Papoutsis says its cinematics, character development, and episode structure are all new elements for the Battlefield series. He also says that while past Battlefield games were somewhat linear, players will have more freedom to take on missions how they want to in Hardline's story mode.

"Overall, I feel like what we're creating is a significant entry for the franchise, and we hope people see it that way," he said.

Also in the interview, Papoutsis acknowledged that one of the challenges with launching the Hardline beta in June immediately after the game was announced was that some gamers did not understand that what they were playing did not represent the final version of the game. This is one of the factors that led some players to think Hardline was just a "re-skin" of Battlefield 4, Papoutsis said.

In June, Visceral responded to concerns that Hardline looked too similar to Battlefield 4, saying at the time that Hardline will be a very different game due to various improvements, tweaks, and additions.

Hardline launches in February 2015 for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PC. A beta for the game will be held on all platforms sometime before the end of the year. For more on Battlefield Hardline, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

It'll be another lackluster MP FPS centric game from EA. I'm convinced that what is making these kind of games so bland and cookie cutter like is their need to try to be all things to all players. They need to stop and go either all out on an SP, or MP game. This trend of cramming all into one is hugely lessening the quality of the overall package. It's why we see such crap out of this genre now with no real innovation and quality. Actually, it's not just this genre making this mistake though. It's in all the genre's to some degree and it's not working.

Honestly, I don't know why developers think that making story progression "like a TV series" is something new.

Its identical to what its always been. Separating a game into segments (I.E. MISSIONS) is what games have been doing for over 20 years now. Its not new and its not exciting.

Fore sure, it will be more polish than BF4 because most important bug have been removed since last year. But I am shocked that the word "Battlefied" have been used for something really different than before. What's next ? Battlefield Pirate ? Battlefield Rome ? Like another one said below, that will be a a better idea to release a new Battlefield 2142. And, please, why only 7 modes and 9 maps ? Come on, why not 20 ? Ahh, yes DLC will come for that after a while. I will pass on this one, BF4 with the new patch, in Classic Mod is a blast for me now.

I really hope the public avoids this game as much as everyone else here is saying. The failure of this, along with CoD dropping like a stone, may well finally give EA the message.

Who am I kidding? EA don't care.

*edit* I'm aware CoD is Activision, I'm just sayin...

I have played beta of Battlefield Hardline. What EA should do is to go to New Mexico, bury all the data carriers with it, and start anew with for example new Battlefield 2142.

Battlefield 4 was a buggy mess of a half game and Hardline is basically cut DLC content. The End.

psssShh,,, no doubt this game is going to be a stress, tired and agonizing game. EA had proven it for all their games. High Revenue, Player Rip Off. and No: 1 marketing bell sheets.... Battlefield 4 was soo awful, that i dream of hate on enemies rather than fun and satisfaction. EA should learn from ubisoft developers....were fun, excite and laughter is their motto....

stop this bullshit. just make battlefield bad company 3 and build up on it instead of tossing it away after a year. online games are supposed to last at LEAST 3 years. i'm not buying these disposable games.

@GraveUypo bfbc2 was kinda crappy.... you couldn't go prone... I guess because they forgot about it? the story mode was terribly corny, and all of the buildings in the mp were copied and pasted over and over again, and the buildings normally were empty for some reason with almost no furniture in any of the houses... and empty factories... or what ever they were trying to make the big buildings be? and all of the maps sucked... they should not make a third one

<< LINK REMOVED >> The developers have explained in the past why you couldn't go prone. Of course they didn't forget it. They didn't put it in because they didn't want snipers to have an unfair advantage of going prone behind some bushes and being completely invisible. They figured out how to get around that problem in BF3 when they put that lens glare on sniper scopes.

it's a mod of a game they are selling at full price. Except unlike other mods that end up being full games (counter strike, day z, LoL etc. etc.) it's not an entirely new game. After the whole BF4 fiasco where they knowingly sold me a broken game that I literally could not play for 3 months after I paid full price for premium, I'll pass on this crap Unless they plan on giving it to me for free I want nothing to do with it. Hell I'm still running into invisible obstacles in BF4 and it's almost been a year since release. How about fix that game first before you try to cash in on a new one.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Even if BF4 was broken at release, it's not a fiasco, they sold 7 millions of copy. I still play this great game since release... With first patchs, the game was ok and stable. And now with the last path, it's like another game, more accurate etc. With Classic mode which is like between normal and Hard Core difficulty, it's great.

Why even bother wasting your time on crap, even if you can get it free? You dump crap into the toilet, do you pick it up to play? It's free.

I find that lately there are more and more "Developer says X to quiet the rumors of Y..." Just because of all of the crap these triple-A publishers are trying to pull. Unfinished content, rehashes of games, over-hyping, the list goes on and on. If you want to quiet the rumors of problems with your game, fix the damn problems.

Make the game different enough and of enough quality to justify a purchase from a consumer. Quit with the PR bull and the articles like this. If your game were decent, nobody would be accusing you of rehashing old stuff. It's like they know the expectation is that the game will be the same as the prior, and they need to clarify that it is indeed another game.

Needless to say I will be skipping this title and any subsequent Battlefield games until I see a change that will revive my interest.

Further, he said Hardline will do more to support the eSports crowd because these players "really want Battlefield to be a competitive thing,"

The problem with this statement is that this is not Battlefield. I love the idea of Cops vs Robbers but when you look at what Rainbow Six has done, this really just seems like cops vs robbers skinned over Battlefield. They could have at least tailored the weapons more to fit the theme.

I miss the days when we had a modding community and were encouraged by game developers to do so. Today we are shackled down by corporate empires who lock the modding community out completely so they can try and cash in on "sequels" like this one. I remember playing awesome mods like Action Quake, CS, and Team Fortress, all made by the community and built with tools provided by developers. The good ol' days are gone.

@rattboy666 I wouldn't be surprised if mods like Desert Combat prolonged the life of Battlefield 1942. I remember back then there were many high quality mods that kept people coming back to it and talking about it even after they were bored of the original game. I wonder why they took modding away, cause I would think they would be positives to keeping people interested in the game and the series, even after other games came out, and they wouldn't really cost the developer or publisher anything to keep going.

They should sell the game in 2 different portion, SP and MP as SP is irrelevant in BF games.

As long as they make the SP quality. Otherwise forget it! I've moved on cuz SP quality has left gaming forever in these types of games.

You released a beta a few months before it was suppose to be released this year. It was the final game, like pretty much any console beta it was just a polished demo. Stop playing your fanbase for fools. You tried to push out an expansion as a full title and everyone called you out on it. Which is when you all decided to delay it so you could put a little extra effort into your cash grab.

The game looks, feels, and plays like BF4. It doesn't matter how you spin it, texture it, call it. It is an expansion.

Payday is a heist game built specifically for it. BF is not meant for these tight maps and subject matter and it is just too chaotic to ever be an Esport. Not going to happen. Nice try though.

Scrap this and put your effort into f.u.c.k.ing up BF5. We don't need this right now.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I agree with everything except the eSports part. Just because I was from the past Oblivion Alienware team in BF3 and the beggining of BF4 when all went wrong in dreamhack.

BF3 had a system that worked in eSports, people liked it, spectators liked it, but it only kicked out few months before BF4 came out. They messed everything up with BF4, it didnt have any tactical gameplay, it was random spawns and 5 people running and capturing flags and even then you had the bad hitbox system, you died in cover , and the best of it , the common crashes without the pause button that, BF3 had, which caused one team to lose 30.000$ in dreamhack. Now the way I see the game will not be an eSport soon because they cant make a polished game and dont listen to the community, and esports is made by the community.

Hardline will be the same, visceral can make a good single player but multiplayer will just be a bunch of DLCs and the same old as they call it "Battlefield Formula". 2 Years ago I switched to Dota, dont have any regrets, its not an FPS but Valve does its job well :) and it works!
